The SSD upgrade and the SBM1 update mentioned at the beginning of this video worked great with my Mac running El Capitan. I now rarely get a dropped connection and the speed in loading music and editing meta tags is amazingly fast. I did the SSD upgrade in less than ten minutes. Thank you very much for the video.

I just finished this upgrade and it went as described. As I only had 112 gb worth of M4A music files and don't purchase new music that often, I went with the 1 tb EVO which I got from Amazon. Because I have never had any luck preforming the operation using ethernet connections via Windows, I did the transfer using wifi which took about 15 hours. Every time I have attempted to use a wired connection, everything shows successful connections and the transfer commences and shows a transfer count, but the spinning icon on the HAPZ1ES never appears, and we all know what that means. At any rate, it worked out and I feel much better relying on an SSD over a HDD for the greater reliability and longevity. I have not noticed any appreciable difference in the sound quality but overall, the music seems to have a smoother "flow" to it. I think this upgrade is well worth the effort.

Awesome video! I am happy I found out that at least some people are still using this great piece of gear. Mine has been sitting idle for some time since I bought it back around 2015 I guess. I am looking forward to having a better connection speed. However, I doubt that chaning the disk will change the way the music sounds. :) It will of course be much quieter. I also think the fan might not be of much use now and might be left out. Not sure if this would work, though, since the connection might be mandatory to run the whole system. I also own two smaller ones, the HAP-S1 and will try to bring them to life now. Thanks for the other hints! Unfortunately, in Germany this Dynamat costs 70 Euros on Amazon. Keep up the good work!

4TB drive only showed 2TB available for the internal drive, despite trying several formatting methods (on device, Linux using external PC, etc…). If you want more than 2TB then it needs an external drive as well. The nice thing about an external drive is that if you add files using a mac with Linux-based file system capability, you can copy from the mac directly via USB, and then when you reconnect the HAP will scan the drive - MUCH faster than using the network transfer.

@@wanlongyu7327 the HAP will format the drive when you first connect it. I don’t think there is any way around that. There is at least one tool that should let you read/write to the external drive after the HAP has formatted it (made by Paragon), which is faster than wireless transfer, but it is pretty easy to transfer to the external drive over network since the HAP shows up as a network device and then lists the external and internal drives separately with a folder structure you can drag files and folders in your preferred organizational scheme

Tharbamar, thanks for the excellent tutorial! Unfortunately, after I finished the SSD installation, I ran into a problem. When plugging the unit back into the AC outlet, the unit tries to turn on but almost immediately the green LED flashes 3 times, and the unit shuts off (I gather, it enters Stand-by mode). If I press the I/O button to wake up the unit, nothing happens...now, if I hold the I/O button down for about 5-6 seconds, then the unit wakes up but the green LED flashes again 3 times and shuts off. I discovered that the only way (it seems) to start the unit is to enter Special Mode, select Re-Start, and then click Enter. The unit gets out of Special Mode and shuts off...it does not restart automatically but it does it when I press (normally, no hold-down) the I/O button--no green LED flashing takes place and the unit remains on. Incidentally, I re-installed the rotary drive but encountered the same problem. Replaced the SATA cable, installed the previous firmware, and still had the same problem. Re-installed the latest firmware and re-installed/re-formatted the SSD but no cigar! I will appreciate immensely your thoughts/suggestions. All the best, C Plazas

In my case, I have 600 folders with 5206 files (songs) in M4A format for 112 gb of music. The format you choose for your music files will dictate how much space you need on the storage drive. It should be noted that the HAPZ1ES enhances all non DSD formats to near DSD quality, so your music is going to sound better in any format you choose. The HAP is an excellent music platform, and unlike a laptop, it was designed specifically to function as a high resolution audiophile grade stereo music server. Another feature I really like is the ability to control the player with your smart phone using the Sony HAP app. I actually kept my last smartphone to use as a dedicated remote and it works great since you only need the wifi capability of the phone for that function.

Great video. The one thing that I have never liked about the HAP-Z1ES is that it had a hard drive instead of a solid state drive. You made it look very simple to change the HDD to the 2TB SSD. In my CD/SACD collection, I originally put in all of the discs using FLAC. Now I am going back to change approximately 300 discs that were SACD to DSD files. It is quickly eating up the 1TB HDD. I have not finished and I am already up to only 261.4GB left. Each SACD takes approximately 3GB, so that leaves about 87 more that I can put in. I do have a question, have you found any way around Sony's limit of only 20,000 titles? I have 18,248 titles in the unit and I plan to purchase several downloads in the next week or so. Thanks again!

About 15 years ago someone figured out how to RIP SACDs with a PS3 which was a complex process. Since that time, the process was rewritten for use with certain Pioneer and OPPO (BDP-103) devices. You essentially are ripping from the OPPO over the network to your PC were all of the extractions and conversions are performed. If you do a search on the internet, I am sure you will come across the process and all of the small, required programs. Bottomline, you are ripping the SACD to an image which you can then extract to individual DSD Stereo and Multi-Channel Hi-Res Audio. Then using software like that found on a MAC you can convert DSDs to FLAC or WAV. Once you have the DSD files you can use a device like OPPO to play them from an external Hard Drive as Stereo or Surround Sound based on the file type.

@Tharbamar
5 ай бұрын
Step down never affect the sound quality in bad way if you use minimum of 3 to 5 times more than required wattage, some people think that way because they don't how electric grid works, every grids has step down transformers. Electricity loses 60-65% of its energy as it travels down wire cables, but high-voltage electricity loses less energy than low-voltage electricity. So the electricity generated in the plant is stepped-up to a very high voltage as it leaves the power plant. Once the electricity reaches its destination, another transformer converts the electricity back to a lower voltage safe for use in homes, truth is adding good quality step down also works as current stabilizer which helps improve the current.

@@Tharbamar I don't know about the microphone I believe most singers use that German made microphone I forgot what name it is. But I can see your point they have some good codecs I have their flagship Sony head unit in my car the special one it has some of the same digital to analog DAC that that unit has they advertise it. I might give it a shot

How can the sound quality be better with an SSD?
@Tharbamar

HDD = data store in spinning disc, a few different heads on reading arm, more power consumption, less power efficient. SSD = data store in integrated circuits, thus faster speed, much less power consumption, better performance.

SSDs don't have mechanical motion vibrations (mechanical noise). HDD has possible noise introduction because of mechanically spinning disc.

@@perryantonio20 Yea, right. But I've had my current file player about a year and before that, I had a different one for 11-12 years. Both had HDDs, but I've never heard noise.

Thanks for the info! This unit has a demo mode, it shows 15 tracks available but they don’t play. Do you know of any other secret menu’s to access them? Is there any advantage to upgrading the internal HD vs adding an external one via the USB ? ( assuming you’re using the internal DAC) thanks

I would check in folder first if you can’t see them you will have to restore them like I did in this video, otherwise everything else is explained in the video, thanks

@@Tharbamar The demo files are actually not the same as the sample files. The sample files play fine, if you put your player into demo mode you’ll see the other 15 tracks I’m referring to.

Yes, after installing the SSD I turned it on with the lid off and the fan wasn't spinning in my unit either. I think it spun based on the HDD temp reported in the SMART info.
