I purchased my LG mutliregion blu-ray player from a seller on ebay here in the UK in 2019 because Double Impact, one of my all-time favourite films, was being released on Region A disc. The blu-ray player was classed as refurbished on ebay which I think meant that the seller had modified the blu-ray player to be region free. It is a good thing that I bought the LG refurbished/modified region free player because I would have had to waIt 4 years for Double Impact to be released on region B disc.

I’m have that Sony, purchased off Amazon as a Region Free player ie; it’s been modded. No Blu Ray player is Region Free out of the box. The company that modded it put a sheet in with it with instructions and a sticker on the back showing it’s a modded region free player. You have to choose the region before you close the drawer. Blue for Region A.

Region coding isn’t optional. It’s required by the studios because different companies license titles for specific territories. The licensing agreements mandate region locks.

To say that region coding isn't optional because the studios have opted out of it is a bit silly. Of course it is optional. If I choose to take 3 showers a day, it's because I opted to take 3 showers a day. Most things are optional if you have the slightest desire to work something out. So the studios and their bedfellows are just being selfish and hard to deal with. Which is nothing new for them. That's for sure.

I live in the US and I have been frustrated by some of my favorite shows (A Discovery of Witches, Picard, Foundation, His Dark Materials) only being avaliable on 1 paid premium channel. I do not want to subscribe to several different channels to see all of these shows. In the past I have waited a few months for these shows to be avalible on DVD for $30 but the US government has allowed the channel to have a monopoly on these shows and 1 year after the show aired you can pre-order a Region 1 DVD for $50. I don't want to cheat the system, I want to give US DVD manufacturers my business. However, if US DVD manufacturers are going to act like a monopoly and overcharge/make me wait an unreasonably long time for DVD's then I have to get DVD's from another region or stop buying DVD's. He is right that most of these region free DVD players are a scam. I'm going to try and import a European DVD player + voltage converter/plug so I can play region 2 DVD's but if that doesn't work I won't be buying anymore DVD's. These greedy show producers thought a monopoly would prevent piracy and increase their profits but its having the opposite effect, if I can't get a reasonably priced DVD in a reasonable amount of time I find a way around the system and they make no money when there is no legal sale.

Try the TOP MENU button trick on the remote. Blu-ray discs verify the code of the player unlike DVDs where the player checks the code of the disc. Hence much more difficult to circumvent

I have the same Sony UBP-X700, except I think mine has an UBP-X700m. Either way, I had a choice for that player for about $162 or $230+ for it to be modded for region free. I chose the less expensive model. I will just use it for 4k UHD discs and region A Bluray discs. If I buy a region B Bluray, I'll just have to rip it first to be able watch it.

OK, I'm sure you've solved this by now, but just for people's information: Info from the previous played blu-ray, including the region is stored in the player's memory. You need to clear this before the new region disc will play. So hit the stop button a few times then open the tray and hit 1 for region A. The tray should close and the player will turn off then back on, Your region A disk should now play ok, If not, clear the memory and hit play again. It should work.

There are no official region free blu ray players you can buy off store shelves. It’s stupid but the blu ray people enforce region locking of blu ray players. The only player I know of that is “region free” in Australia is the laser, it’s still locked but they (very) openly share the code to switch the region… really cheap player too and honestly all you really need for playing both local and US discs. Feels kinda cheap, but at that price, honestly, if it breaks you could just buy another.

I believe the region free only refers to the UHD Blu-rays which are free of region coding. For blu-rays and DVDs the player will follow the region coding based on the country you purchase the player from. The region coding will be printed on the box packaging. I have that Sony UHD player. There are videos on KZitem of people jailbreaking these blu-ray players to change the region coding - but i think it will only allow you to change it a limited number of times before it becomes fixed to one region only.

You didn't even correctly change the region on the LG player. It's not just pushing #1 when the player is reading a disk. You have to change the region before a disk is installed at the menu screen. Then and only then can you install a disk to play that region.
@eltonnoway7864

Was going to say the same thing. Have the LG and the instructions were very clear on how to change the region.. For starters, no disk Installed in the player because it immediately attempts to read it when its spinning up. NET: Menu screen, change region ... then our insert disk!

Well, if you looked at the back of the player, you will see if it is actually region free, the LG UBK80, in Australia, clearly shows 4 and B on the back, it ain't rocket science, had you have looked at the back of any players it does show if it is region free or not, if it is, you may not see any region advice, or it will show ALL regions. In the video, when you hold the Sony Player up to the camera, showing the back, right near your right hand I am pretty sure it shows the regions (B) and (4) - Australia. This will save anyone from going to the trouble of setting it up. Further, a lot of UHD DVDs (4K DVDs) are region free anyway. Blu-Ray DVDs are set as Region A, B or C. Standard DVDs are region 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Australia is B for Blu-Ray and 4 For standard DVDs. Just a Query, if the box on the LG had already been opened, there would be signs of that, I personally would not accept a "NEW" Player if the box had been opened. Again, not Rocket Science, just common sense. Just one more point, You "DON'T" like LG yet you bought one, and you DON'T like Sony, and yet you purchased one... Really doesn't make sense to me. Also, when purchasing online, always determine what region the DVDs are, for me, if not 4 for DVDs, and B for Blu-ray, I don't buy the DVDs, unless they are in fact Region free... All simple common sense. One more thing, there are a lot of electronic products available, but most of them are made in the same factory, with the same components, they just have different casings, or just a label change.... You can always ask the staff at the store where you are purchasing the Players from to show you the back of the player on display, this will save you even more time, effort, energy, and annoyance and prevent you from buying the "Wrong" player. (Or just have a look for yourself).
