The prototype of this has been showing up in sony product ads that include sony music personel for years, im not sure whether they are intentional for teaser or the studio are simply asked to test drive it for years. i have the mv1, its tuned very, very similarly to Sony's own Hifi flagship headphone MDR Z1R (also own it), the MV1 itself tho imo, also agree with you, its bass reach, and instrumental placement, which IMO is unbeateable at this price, only Audio Technica M70x is close to it on the placement accuracy. soundstage is as said, headphone - like but that precision in itself make it a very good music and movie consumption headphone.

Thanks for the information. I think in time someone going to make a set of headphones that reproduces atmos better. I feel the music industry is pushing for atmos to be the new stereo. But I highly doubt that consumers are going to buy a atmos setup to listen to music in there homes. Most people consume there music on headphones. People really don't have stereo systems in there homes anymore either. In time we will see. Thank you

100% I bought these MDR-MV1's.... and I have been playing a LOT of FPS gaming with them. Counter Strike, Hunt Showdown, etc. And its so accurate, its insane. When I hear someone, they are EXACTLY where I thought there were, based on sound. Now my usual daily driver headphones were my Sony MDR-Z7M2's.... And because they are closed back, the sound stage is shallow, so when I hear an enemy, they sound closer than they actually are. On the flip side, I had purchased the Sennheiser HD660s2's and their sound stage is TOO WIDE. So when I hear an enemy, it sounds like they are really far away, when they are actually closer. AND YET, the MDR-MV1's, right where I hear them, are exactly where the enemy is. Its that accurate for gaming. I do believe when it comes to 360 mastering, there is probably a tuning required to match an actual atmos system. When I saw the Sony demo video on youtube, the women sat down, they put microphones in her ear, and then used a 5.1 system to play a sweep of sounds, to get her personal ear setup. Then after, they played some content. Next they put the headphones on, and once again played content, with her eyes closed. She said she legit thought she was listening to the 5.1 system not headphones. So there was some tuning involved in that aspect. I am sure your setup, there was no tuning to get the headphones to match your system in your studio. So I am curious if there is some kind of tuning required to make them perfect 1:1 for your room. Generically, I would say they are setup for people like me, who use headphones more often than anything, as with gaming, its 1:1 in terms of what I hear vs what I see on screen. Also hope that you had enabled dolby atmos in windows (if you are using windows) in order to get have the headphones atmos enabled. That will probably also make a difference. For me, I have dolby atmos gaming enabled when gaming.....

You think pretty immersive for single player games as well? I'm looking at these or dt 900 pro x

@@Chilll87 not a fan of beyerdynamic's due to the bass roll off.... almost all open back headphones have a bass roll off issue.... its a sad "audiophile" meme. they always say sony's have V sound.... bullshit, the bass isn't bloated, its natural bass, they are just used to headphones that lack bass and think they are "neutral" because of said lack of bass. the ONLY two headphones that have some resemblance of natural bass.... I bought the $600 Sennheiser HD660s2's and they are dogshit. the head clamp force makes me feel like my head will pop like a grape. very uncomfortable. but does have bass considering its open back. however, the bass is bloated due to design, so you can't turn them up very loud without them mechanically distorting. then there is my brothers HD800s Reference headphones, which are as flat as you can get and $1600.... they sound great, nice natural bass. meanwhile, the MV1's are cheaper than the HD660s2's, the bass is cleaner and less muddy, and sounds great..... on the note of immersion, I would say the MV1 are great for single player too. playing starfield with them, I have been in heaven audibly. I have dolby atmos for windows enabled at all times for gaming to give me proper surround sound. on that note, BOTH my gaming friends have bought the MV1 off my recommendation. my buddy LOVES to play call of duty warzone 2, and he said the accuracy of pinpointing enemies was the best hes ever heard. he can't go back to "gamer headsets" now because of me.... the MV1's are just that fucking good. and the price is amazing considering other brands which are worse and can cost up to 2x as much.... sony knocked it out the fucking park.

I have the Sony and agree with you assessment 100% They are super great for stereo mixing and the Atmos mixes I have heard so far just don;t live up to the hype. Is it Ok? Sure... but its almost gimmicky like playing with pans and effects in a stereo mix. It gets old really fast. Are they still above average for listening and mixing? Completely!!! Do I recommend them? Yes... Would I rely on them for Atmos or 360 without all the speakers? Well I don't really care about either of them but I would rather have the speakers if it wasnt so damn expensive.. Who the heck is gonna put that many speakers in the living room anyway just to hear your music? Not many. And lets not forget about the phone and earbud crowd.. LOL this is no diff than the 7.1 mixing. Dolby Atmos has been out for around 10 years i think? Why is it a big deal now? Its not really.. just people trying to sell you more gear.

Hi, do you recommend them for making a post production rough mix? I just need a 5.1 or ATMOS feeling for the spatiality.

Atmos for music is dead as a brick already. Everyone went all out to maximise the buzz last year, and now it’s all but gone silent.

Thanks for the review sir. Did you have to make an HRTF profile of your ears before using these headphones for Atmos or are they supposed to work straight out of the box?
@kinghandlee

It works better if you can get an HRTF profile. It's even better if you can use a Smyth Research A16 with your headphones. You can watch and know more about it here. kzitem.info/news/bejne/zGpu3Z-pjZmGm6g
