With the latest firmware, there's barely a difference on balanced output.SE 1A is better due to more power and dynamics

The language can be changed with a tool on a computer. It's quite easy and can be done in 2 mins

If it can't be done on the unit itself, it is ridiculous, antiquated, and not ready for 2005.

Fauxtaku Lounge the unit he has is the Jdm version, it isn't supposed to be used outside of Japan, tho you can change the region of it easily. If you buy the tourist, us or European version you will have a lot of different languages to choose from.

It's the strangest thing: do Japanese companies think Japanese people are the least educated, stupidest people on the planet, or are they just lazy?

Those 'films' on various locations of the device are to mitigate oxidation/corrosion/dulling from storage/transport & scuffing during the mfg pack-out process. Typical of high end products that are produced in that part of the world.

@@FauxtakuLounge Well despite his terrific English he doesn't seem to me to be a native speaker and I was trying to work out where he was from - I think he's a German speaker who's spent much of his life in Canada. And -> Ant 7'46 - sounds like a German tic to me. Still - incredibly good level of English!

Addy Dokes • This product probably isn’t for you. And, the price of the US model isn’t for me either (ouch!), but the $400 16GB Chinese version is appealing to me. Screen is only the top 2/3 of the height of this thing, but the components inside (battery, amp, etc) are bigger than the screen and need the bigger body. The device only does audio, but it produces audio at higher quality than a smartphone (even an LG V30 or Apple iPhone). Audio quality (and battery life) have to be worth it to you before considering any Audio Player like this.

Ezugo Obuekwe - The LG’s quad DAC isn’t responsible for the driving power of that smartphone... DACs are more about detail and realism. The Amplifier is what can drive different impedance headphones. The LG V30 probably will satisfy users on the go, but the ZX300 should still perform better when compared side-by-side. That said, the ZX300, when balanced and connected to a 16 Ω load, will output 200 mW + 200 mW (L + R channels). I tried looking up the output of the LG V30 just now, but I haven’t been able to find it. So, I can’t point to numbers to illustrate why the ZX300 is better, but I can say the thicker and larger volume ZX300 is packed with circuitry optimized for audio, while the thin LG V30 uses an off-the-shelf ESS audio solution (one integrated chip, basically) to handle audio while most of the physical space of the LG V30 is concerned with being a phone, camera, reading device, and everything else we use smartphones for.

Ezugo Obuekwe - I’m looking for the same thing! I think I’ve narrowed in to this Sony ZX300, especially the cheaper Chinese version. FiiO X7 is what I have now. You can actually change or upgrade the amp on it (FiiO sells separate amp modules), and it sounds pretty great with everything I try (Sennheiser HD 650 is pretty addicting on it). Problems: I can only download a little Spotify/TIDAL music, even though I have lots of microSD space, WiFi strength is weak, interface is a little slow/glitchy, and I wish the battery lasted longer than 8-9 hours. Questyle QP2R - improves over the last version, sounds great with full-size headphones (surprisingly great pairing with Focal Utopia!) but it’s pretty expensive and low impedance headphones (like IEMs) can reveal significant hiss. About 10 hour battery life. Astell & Kern - usually super expensive. Kann is too big for pocket but otherwise is pretty great, new SR15 “A&Norma” has dual-DAC and a balanced output from digital file to final 2.5mm Jack, DSD and MQA support, WiFi and Bluetooth, Android so you can install Spotify/TIDAL/Qobuz, nice in hand and pocket, about 9 hours battery life, $700. Onkyo/Pioneer DAPs (like the Rubato) - Android, 2 microSD slots, balanced output, good reviews of sound quality, good prices, 15 hour battery life. But, it has a weird interface. Honestly, the Rubato has almost won me over a few times. This Sony has sony-in-house-made proprietary DAC and amp systems, end to end balanced output with the more durable 4.4mm output (I’ve seen so many 3.5mm plugs broken off inside of phones), small and rounded ergonomics, LDAC Bluetooth, no WiFi or Android HOWEVER you can connect it to your smartphone over Bluetooth and stream any audio, 25-30 HOURS of BATTERY!! US Version is $700, but a Chinese Import version is about $400. It really seems like a do-all device, except it has a proprietary data/charging port (Why Sony?) and you can’t offline load Spotify/TIDAL tracks directly onto the device (remember the two way Bluetooth though). So far, this appeals to me the most.
