Very cool FourX. I find it hard get decent info on test points for calibrating optical drives. Could do with doing a few of my consoles, Mega CD, Saturn and Playstations.

I know what you mean, trying to find service manual's can be tricky sometimes. Recalibrating a optical pickup for a Mega CD, Saturn is a little more involved than the PlayStations as you need to cal the tracking also.

this is the new best 1002 laser adjustment video on youtube, thank you very much. I have a 1002 with original laser, once i calibrated all pots it started to read the discs better than my other ps1s 9002, 102, 5502 if its upside down. Even burned games. Also i can't stand these noisy spindle motors, i would replace that.

Thanks, I wouldn't go as far as the best 1002 laser adjustment video on KZitem but thanks. Having to turn the PlayStation upside down for it to read disc's is a sign of worn sled rails. That Optical Pickup (laser) is gone, even if you tried to recal it. it's simply to far gone.

Tracking, Check the tracking signal. look for what will look like excessive noise as you step through the tracks with your scope. If your using an early model laser those have issuse. See if you can retrofit a later model laser.

Phil this was exactly the video that I was looking for. I've got a SCPH 1002 model which I've bought in 1997. The laser became faulty and I have just decided to buy a chinese BAM440 model laser reader. I have applied it to the system and it doesn't read anything. And even the spindle stopped turning after I tried to eleveate the spindle as it came tight out of the box. So how to do all this at home without machines such as yours available, would you suggest an easy way if there is any? Thanks for your time.

It could be as simple as a faulty lid sense switch to something harder like a blown CD RF Amp or Motor Driver IC. I would try the Optical Pickup (laser) in another PlayStation, then you could tell if it was the Laser or something more serious. Sorry I don't have time at the moment to work on other's system, Sorry.

You could try and adjust the pot small turns and monitor the disc while the system is playing FMV (look for skipping) but your doing it blind. To get it dialled in you need a scope I'm afraid.

I don't have an oscilloscope.... But are those little digital one useless for this purpose?? I cannot buy a 300€ equipment just to calibrate one console. Anyway my 1002 has an original BAM laser taken from a PSOne and pretty much read everything fine. But with some burned discs I can hear the "lens"/laser occasionally losing track of the disc while seeking data. What potentiometer could I try to tweak to adjust this erratic behaviour? It's pretty much an issue caused by both the verbatim discs and dvd burner that I use....but I don't have access to a better cd/dvd drive or better blank cds. Also Tayo Yuden aren't manufactured anymore(?).

I'll give you a tip. Leave it alone. No I'm serious Leave it alone. If you don't have the right equipment all you can do is make it worse by messing with the adjustment potentiometer. I'm not trying to come across as an equipment snob but you need quality equipment to calibrate a Laser (optical Block) and messing with the potentiometer will just make things worse.

Sorry but a laser (Optical Pickup) is a sensitive piece of equipment and needs proper tool for installation, you can't just wing it and hope for the best. if you do you could damage the laser.

Wondered if you could help with a SCPH-1002 problem I have? Mine has now started not reading discs (they'll spin for about 5 seconds then it stops, the laser never attempts to read). It has an original AAM drive but upon opening it the sled rail is actually still ok. To make matters worse, I've tried the AAM drive in another PS1 (a SCPH-5xxx I think) and the drive does still work without any problems. I tried that PS1s drive (a AEM) in my SCHP-1002 and it won't read still. I unfortunately don't have a scope but I've checked measurements on the pots and have 11.4mv on the AAM drive, 1.7V on the bias pot and 1.82V on the gain when disc is spinning. The other PS1 had the same settings or more or less when the AAM worked in it too (the AEM drive has about 12mv as well if I remember right....). Worth doing anything or has it finally just gone junk? It's not even an Xstation candidate as it's the older PU8 board. It's got a modchip installed, not from me but doesn't look the greatest install (it's a pin 1, 5, 6, 8 one) and it did work with it previously. I had contemplated snipping it off but don't know if it'll make a difference tbh.
@Four_X

Not going to lie, it sounds bad especially if you've tried the Laser in another system and it works, that would indicate there's something wrong with the CD Controller IC or CD DSP (Digital Signal Processor) in the PlayStation, Sadly you can only diagnose this using a oscilloscope. It's a bummer some of the early 1000 series PlayStation aren't compatible with the XStation, but if your CD Controller IC or CD DSP (Digital Signal Processor) has failed the XStation wouldn't work anyway.
