I have had some luck with hand lapping heads that were not to far gone. That is a lot of work though. I also tried replacing a worn permalloy head with a sendust head thinking it would be an upgrade. It didn't turn out well as the frequency response was all jacked up. Maybe different inductance or saturation characteristics, don't know. Hand lapped the old head and put it back in, it worked well enough. Sometimes you got nothing to lose by trying.

Reminds me of aligning the response on CEI 993 Fidelipac cart machines in the 80s. The advertised spec +/- 3dbm but the factory spec was 1dbm. Could sometimes achieve 0.5dbm. Very nice audio on this machine, it’s appearance reminds me of the Marantz Superscope that we had at Plenty Valley FM in the late 80s.

Tape decks can be a pain in the arse to get right, and if the record/play levels and recording bias levels have been messed with, it can be hard to find a starting point. I have seen this behavior at other "thrift" type stores, I will typically gather up all the items - head unit, speakers, matched components etc. and take it up to the counter and ask them why they think separating each piece that clearly goes with another and was donated as such a good idea? I tell them I am willing to pay for the head unit with the cost covering all the components that belong to the unit. This has worked every time I have done this. I am not accusatory in these exchanges. I just typically ask them why is it priced that way.

I'd suspect that there's a bad op-amp somewhere. The tape sounded over saturated which may have to do with an op-amp clipping. Considering the right record level is maxed out I'm not super shocked. The good news is that back then, Sony used off the shelf parts instead of the proprietary ASIC chips they have now.

Hi Dave. I've serviced a ton of Sony "high end" cassette decks. In fact I'm still doing it once in a while. I've had this very problem many times. I've found that some low value caps on the Dolby circuitry had gone dry and it caused imbalance on playback and record especially when Sony changed to SMD components. I fully appreciate the worn out head but I've seen heads in worse condition which play and record well, when the head is evenly worn out. Might be a good idea to have a look there.
@12voltvids

Except I wasn't using Dolby. I think it is more likely that someone was playing with the controls.
@dimitarlazarov2094
2 жыл бұрын
Yes I know you didn't use Dolby. More recent decks had the "Dolby" boards separate from the motherboard and could be swapped in a matter of seconds. Even with removed Dolby boards they continued working but the levels were way off. I think that they had the signal going through them even when Dolby was turned off. No doubt someone was thinking with the controls as this was happening all the time. I really hate when I get a three head deck for service and some bonehead had ruined the vertical alignment of the heads. I've chewed so many mirror tapes in the past. I've learned to not agree to service a machine in such condition

Considering its age, maybe new electrolytics might be in order. I have an old Sony 8mm video deck that has lost its video output. Thinking its the caps on the video output chain. My Kyocera Hi8 camcorder has also lost its playback function as well. Someone in the past told me this was actually a Sony bearing different livery. Any idea if Sams Photofacts might have info on these old units?
@12voltvids
2 жыл бұрын
The Caps are fine as the sound quality is good. Believe me when the Caps go bad you'll know it real quick because it'll sound like shit. You'll lose all your high frequency sound. Capacitors that really failed badly were they surface mounted electrolytics which this does not contain any they're all through hole type and they typically don't fail. Camcorders had bad caps, lots of them because they were all surface mounted. Sony made that other camera you have. They owned the brand as they did with Aiwa too.

@@12voltvids Hey Dave I have a couple of consumer Sony cassette decks. On an older Sony TC-FX7 I noticed a similar effect slightly lower output from CR02 tape verses type 1 tape. The type 1 returned a perfect match in tone response compared to the slight drop from type 2. Perhaps another tone test using type 1 to see if you have the same slight drop with type 1. The Sony TC-FX7 is a champ on type 1 despite the slightly higher level of tape hiss compared to type 2. BTW the type 2 sounds EXCELLENT too just that annoying slight drop when recording on it (don't get back the levels it was set at). Just a thought and I thought perhaps all Sony tape decks had that struggle when recording on type 2. Although I don't notice it happening on the Sony TC-FX705 (have 2 of those units).

Yeah so does PayPal. I really hate taking PayPal for payments. I haven't sold anything on eBay since I got burned about 20 years ago. It's something I generally don't talk about. Would just assume forget what happened but I learned that there are fraudsters out there everywhere that are looking to get something for nothing. They know every trick in the book to get what they want without paying a dime and unfortunately once you ship something you're at the mercy of the person receiving it to be honest. It's too easy to use that item not described button to file a dispute. Then it becomes the seller's responsibility. If someone discovers a scratch for example that was not disclosed or a Mark or a dent or some feature that's not working that the seller didn't even know wasn't working because that was never tested. Anything a fraudulent buyer can use to claim something was not as advertised is enough to trigger a charge back.there was just a local story on CBC news last week I bought a guy that sold a camera back east and fell into exactly the same situation that I found myself in about 20 years ago when I sold a camera. He's out his camera never got paid and to add insult to injury he still had to pay the listing and closing and the PayPal fees that were charged. So not only was he out his camera and he was out the money but to add insult to injury he had to pay all the fees as well. He went public with it and they did a new story that's something that I should have done 20 years ago. Anyway I left a bad taste in my mouth I won't sell anything or buy anything off eBay.

No. Different materials and characteristics makes head swaps not a simple task, especially when replacing ferrite and sendust heads like the one on this device with with a cheap crappy permalloy head. For playback, sometimes it only requires minor adjustments to the EQ circuit (or just level adjust, if the same type of head), but for record? Forget it, especially in this case. Best solution here is a relap, although I think this device has a capacitor problem as well.
