For this to be a proper color science test both cams should be at AUTO WHITE BALANCE and DEFAULT color profiles. Not to mention Fuji has been known to work best with AWB and adjusting Sony’s color profile makes it automatically invalidated. Choosing a film simulation known to have flat colors and commenting that it has NO pop on the color is ridiculous. AWB + Default colors with no tweaks whatsoever is the proper test for colors. *paused to comment* 6 for A, 4 for B. I knew which were which anyway as it's easy to tell Sony colour from Fuji, but I think the biggest factor in me 'liking' one from the other is simply the white balance. Most of the shots the Sony seemed to have a warmer white balance with an almost red cast, which works well for skin tones but not for scenery. I do wonder how they would perform if they were set to a custom white point that matched. The Sony's blues seem to have a slight shift toward purple, so for the shot with the water and the blue jacket was somewhat off imo. Maybe something to do with the white balance. Just my thoughts :)
@MichaelSchagen

Fuji colors look very similar to Panasonic colors to me with which I have more experience. Panasonic also emphasizes the greens too much when using a pre-set white balance, but shows mostly good colors after having done a manual white balance. Also, the standard profile often gives a brand-specific, avarage consumer pleasing look which isn't necessarily the most accurate one. One must often choose another profile (neutral, natural or whatever it is called) to get accurate colors.

@MichaelSchagen

@@DBOYNJ8 with auto white balance you really don't know anymore what you are looking at. Is the difference caused by a difference in color science or by a difference in the algorithm which guesses the white balance setting? Only using a manual white balance using a grey or white target eliminates other variables such as different white balance presets or algorithms. It should be done anyway if you really care about accurate and consistent color.

White balance was not properly configured in any of the camera. Many Pro photographers have been commented that to use Fuji cameras, you need to have some knowledge. But in Sony, you need nothing, just aim and shoot which imho, does not work great in some situations. If the camera does everything, then what would I do, just sitting idle and chewing grass?!
@stefantasic9271

I'll try and give a different perspective on the matter. What I noticed using Sony cameras and in this test, there is always some yellow and magenta cast in the image. This can be at times really hard to fix in post, especially with the 100Mbps 8bit 4:2:0 codec. If you look at the first shot of the girl with the flowers the skin and hair get that yellowish tone that is not present on Fuji. The green of the foliage always looks more vibrant and neon on Sony (I guess because of the yellow in the green channel) than it is in real life. Also if you look at her bow the red is more orange then on Fuji. You can also see this red shift in the shot were the girl stands on the parking lot so you can compare her bow with the car light behind. In the same frame you can see that green-yellow blotch under her chin. In the nature shot with the river in front you can see how the sky and water is more magenta on the Sony than Fuji, the darkest part of the water is almost purple (you can take a screenshot and use a qualifier to pick individual colors apart). Now, Fuji does loose some detail with overexposure, I don't know if it's because of the knee or something else, but almost all of the shots that were slightly underexposed had more detail and color in the shadows on Fuji. I also don't know if Max used h265 10 bit on Fuji, or just a regular 8bit h264, because there is a noticeable color difference between the two. There is also different DR options on Fuji (DR100, DR200, DR400) which extend the range of highlight clipping. Also omitted from this test is the mixed light situation. Sony is clipping the blue channel in the highlights, and when you for example film an event at the club with different temperature lights it can create banding and color cast. I have owned many Sony cameras EX1, a6300, a6500, a7III and now I have X-T3 to compare. I'm not bashing Sony, they made great improvements to their line of products and their color science, just pointing out the things I experienced when grading material.

I recently saw a short interview of a man at Fuji in Japan who apparently developed Velvia colours long ago in their slide film and then their transition to digital. He said that they didn't try to duplicate real life colours in Velvia, but rather aimed for what the mind recalled after with an emotional element to it. This likely explains why colours are not always intended to match true life in some (but not all) profiles. I suspect it applies to most camera brands.

7A and 3B... for the skin colors it was the same reasoning here. I thought the more pale/greenish one would be the Sony... but it turns out to be the Fuji... Also I just watched a photo comparisson Canon R5, Fujifilm GFX100S, Sony A7RIV and Sony A1(same for A9II and A7SIII) --> Canon has those warmer more "redish" color profiles that seem to appear more pleasing especially for skin color. The Sony A7RIV shared the same more pale/greenish look with the Fujifilm GFX100S (I was negatively supprised by that) while the newer Sony sensors such as A1 (but also A9II and A7SIII) looked much more similar to the Canon R5. Sometimes too redish, sometimes the Canon R5 seemed "greenish" now haha. So I guess there is a lot happening color wise at Sony. Since Canon and Fujifilm colors are always so beloved by many people I was really suprised here how different the Fujifilm GFX100S looked. Maybe the other Fuji Cameras look different. (I'm not sure, but I think I remember Sony provides Fujifilm with the sensors? or is it just for the medium format which would explain the GFX100S look).

C O nope, won’t do it. And not doing it means I have no right to comment what settings should be done. And doing 10 tests total does not conclude any test really. Photography or not, 10 tests doesn’t mean anything.

This was a great comparison. From what everyone always says about Fuji cameras I was expecting it to run away with this. I guess not so much. I liked most of the Sony shots better.

I think it would really depends in your skin tone which camera would you prefer. Most will chose camera A if you have like an albino skin, which adds a bit of tan or more natural skin colour to the photos. And for tan people like me or darker skin complex , camera B is more suitable not to hide those beautiful smile. I dont really see the point of choosing camera B if you have lighter skin as camera B allows more light to come in to camera exposures.

I watched this on my PS4 with a 50 inch tv and could tell which one was the fuji due to the subtle pulsing of the background. I suppose the focal length and background will determine how noticeable this is. I prefer the color results and focus of the sony. I know when it comes to stills, the XT3 will have cleaner low light images than the A7iii. But i find it easier to shoot in a really dark environment or bright afternoon with the A7iii. I usually reduce contrast and slightly reduce the saturation then make the adjustments in post(for stills).

I have both the Sony A7M3 and the Fuji XT3. If you use PP6 with contrast and saturation punch up, why would you then compared it with Eterna? They are like the total opposite of each other. Standard or Provia would be more useful as a comparison. Not a good comparison at all. Also I think some of exposure doesn't match up. Better color science didn't win here.

I had 7 a and 3 b, I think the Sony handled the skin tones and highlights a lot better but the detail was quite harsh in some shots. The Fuji has a heavy cyan to it which you have a tendency to get from some film stocks but I think it affects the skin tones a bit too much. I suspected that A was the Sony camera but I think it's because I've owned a Sony camera and I have a feel for the sort of colors you would expect from them.

Sony's images warmer, richer, especially in skin tones. I'm glad since I've just bought the Sony a6600! Practically, the Sony a6600, like the others in the series, have such a nice small, portable feel to them. As a traveler I hate bulky camera bodies and large/long lenses. Sony's emount system allows me to buy cheaper but good generic lens makers such as Sigma. I've used the Sony A6000 for years-but, here's the negative: I hate the loss in the Sony a6600 from the Sony a6000 of panorama mode and an internal flash. Why would they get rid of two such useful features?! The internal flash has always been handy as a traveler and the panorama mode was outstanding. Yes, of course there are workarounds, but that is not the point for a traveler wanting these things in a compact easy-to-use format.

A, A, A, B, A, A, A, A, A, A, were my choices. Although I find this test pointless. First of all - most people will grade their footage anyway (those who don't probably don't care about it anyway). Then you moved to the profiles. Not only did you tweak Sony's settings, which makes the test irrelevant then as it's not Sony colour science anymore, it's yours (especially as you tweaked saturation, which in most consumer cameras affects reds then greens the most). You also used Fuji's Eterna filmstock simulation, which IMO is not suitable for the conditions you tested at. It's best at artificial lighting, city scenes with loads of reflections and contrast. Definitely not good for skin tones as it adds that green cast. Also it clipped highlights (especially visible in the slide shot). I enjoyed watching the video anyway :)

They're actually like analog film behaves. Strong compression and desaturation. In order to cope with it exposure needs to be lower in certain situations, also a warmer WB would have helped. Sony has the typical rec709 tuning on the other hand with reds turning yellow once clipping instead of losing saturation gradually

So in the skintones, there's more detail in the Sony. Like with the little girl below her neck, the veins are a bit more visible. Or with the boy on his face. Does that mean those details are lost in the Fujifilm, or can they be restored when color correcting and grading the material? I know it's an old video, but i can't find that explanation anywhere. Thank you in advance.

The one spect of this that I really think deserves more comment is COLOR ACCURACY. There are side-by-side photos where the colors - the blues/purples - aren't even close. I'd like to know which camera more accurately displayed the colors. To me, this is a far more important and more objective measurement than the highly subjective "color science". In post we can tweak colors however we'd like - but I really want the best representation of real world color - not just the most pleasant looking rendition. Thanks for all the work you do - and for producing top-notch content.

I chose like you do, Max. Except that for 6-10 I'd choose to go with A if I had to use the footage without touching it further, but I do think B looked more "correct" with it's better color separation. The color cast from the surroundings (including the blueish grey from the sky) does give an unappealing tone to it (for me), and that's why I'd go with A straight out of the camera.
@AustrianGeek

Sony is sharper - But the Fuji has more accurate colors in some areas (especially the blue channel is more violet / "purplish" in some shots - water and denim clothes for example). Fuji had also more harsh highlight roll-off and too high exposure sometimes (more blown out skins in some shots). I would say (as so often): Sony for Video - Fuji for stills ^^. Btw.: Did you shoot both in 4K? The X-T30 looks quite soft in some shots (for example at 3:17 it looks like the sony is at 4K and the Fuji is at 1080P) ^^.

a tie on the first 4. 4-2 preference when in the cine2/eterna section. Suspect A is sony because skin goes ruddy and denim turns purple. B is fuji, the plus is that skin didn't go too contrasty, minus because of the green cast.
