I think this is the only way this song can be responsibly and sustainably done. I haven’t ever heard a rendition with high belting that sounds healthy, and I think that’s because the vocal direction the show went with is just not how vocal cords were designed to be used. Broadway has an unfair amount of high belting, especially considering actors have to do it eight times a week.

Wonderful breakdown of Sophia's technique. While she has talent I hate how many theatre kids are trying to sing like her now because some of her technique is not healthy. I've seen her live and her sustainability was just not there, and there where a few moments where my husband and I looked at each other in shock at the damage we could hear her doing during a show. which explains why her understudy went on for her for a good chunk of the run.

YES YES YES. In context of the show all of these glottal stops, screams etc. are really cool but I would definitely be worried what would happen if she continued to sing like that for years and years. I'm definitely a firm believer of a grounded larynx, so I think if she worked on not letting it rise or pinch so much it would sound and probably feel MUCH healthier! I've never thought any kind of raise in the larynx is good if you can help it, but i do suppose it raises slightly and healthily when you get up to those higher notes. I also agree that adding these things makes the voice and character SO much more dimensional though. Loved your commentary!

I don't personally have experience with performing with that scream type of sound, but I have close friends who do, one of which has a mom who is a vocal coach. The mom instructed him on how to do that in a healthy way, which doesn't sound like how she's doing it at all. It doesn't have that sound that makes you cringe as a vocalist because it sounds SO tight and uncomfortable for the larynx. It's a much more relaxed feel while still having a lot of edge to it.

In defense of SAC, she had strep performing this so it probably made her voice sound even more strained. She also said she doesn't do the screaming thing every performance. I've listened to her sing now that she's left Beetlejuice and she sounds good to me, though I've love to see you react to it for more insight! I feel kind of bad for her. Everyone assumed she has messed up her voice but as you said, no one has seen her personally so we don't know for real. Then all the rumors that came out like her being rude and using her understudy too much, I just feel bad. The whole understudy thing bothered me because I don't think it's true. When the cast experienced a death SAC cried during Home on stage and then ran off, but she came back and finished the rest of the song. That doesn't sound like someone who just uses their understudy constantly to me. Sounds like a teenager not being able to handle the stress of broadway, life, and school.

That's a really good one! Hopefully, if she did do it it would be a live performance(although that would have to be a bootleg), because I really wanna see how a vocal coach would talk about the breakdown at the end.

Ooph I'd love to see you react to Alex Brightman explaining on an interview how he can do his fancy voice all the time without damaging it - It was on a radio interview I think...

On the subject of "I'm concerned if this is sustainable" I'd love to hear you react to... any Alex Brightman song from Beetlejuice OR Helluva Boss. The man is a dang mutant to do that voice 8 shows a week.

I've just discovered your channel and I already like it, you seem really lovely and I'd love to see some performances from Hadestown be reacted to! Wait for me and the reprise are both really good examples and it's a really good show in general!

I’m honestly so sick of everyone saying that she has an “unhealthy technique” SHE DID THIS EVERYDAY!!!SHE KNEW WHAT SHE WAS DOING!!! she obviously had a vocal coach somewhere on the set of beetle juice or private lessons.Thank you for not saying “she doesn’t know what she’s doing” or comparing her to others. But I will agree this wasn’t her best performance. She usually doesn’t do the rasps and screams during performances.
