My father was Rhondda born, my grandfather mined there. I grew up with Max Boyce's songs, this brought a tear.

What an inspired musical treat! One of Max's best songs combined in real time with Sophie's perfect harmonies. Full marks to the genius who thought of it. Thanks Gina.

I grew up in Rhymney Valley There is a beautiful phrase where the song digresses from English into Welsh "Where old men say at close of Day 'Dyn wedi a gwyneudd a sha' I often heard old men when I was a young boy growing up in the Valley in the 1970s There's no direct translation It can only be said by old men reflecting upon their toil and hardship in having worked in mines and heavy industry And in this sense it means "We always did our best" A wonderful mixture of the two different languages

wonderful... just beautiful.. In nantyffyllon my first teacher was Mrs Davis.. she was as old as our hills... She taught me to loop my letters in a very Victorian way.. My father brought home tools from the pit.. They all had a hole on their handles.. why - because this is the way they are put on "The bar" at the end of the shift... He said I will never go down the pits.. I went into the Army..

I still have some of mine and recently restored and sharpened my Dad's old hatchet. I should have brought my bar out on last shift.

As a small boy, I lived on Nantyffyllon Terrace. My auntie lived on Church St, Caerau. 65 years ago. Time passes.

My great grandfather was killed in a mine collapse in Ebbw Vale aged 21. Apparently he was late for work but just managed to jump on the bus as it was pulling away.

A beautiful and emotional song and indeed a tribute to the great Max Boyce, an artist who could change from a comedian to a serious singer in the blink of an eye.
