Glad to hear you're on the mend mate. I've been watching all of your Sopwith videos so far and I appreciate you showing us the whole process. As someone who is thinking of building one of Robert Baslee's planes, (specifically the DH 2 which will be a cable nightmare) I enjoy and greatly appreciate you giving us viewers little tips and tricks you think of or issues you come across with your own brilliant solutions to them. I can't wait to see your work continue and to see you finish building the beauty. Much luck and support from the US. As for your brake issue, if you like the idea of using brakes with your hands, maybe you could make paddles that are attached on each side of the flight stick and run a line from each of them down to the master cylinder, however if you just want one brake system instead of differential brakes, you just need one large paddle on the back of the control stick connected to the master cylinder (this could also give you better tactile feedback about your braking performance). (you could also use a paddle with the same profile as your control yoke so you can hold it more naturally and manipulate it more easily)

Happy New Year Scott. Hope that finger is better soon. Looking forward to your continued build. It’s the opposite weather here in Winnipeg Canada where you have +33C, we have -20C and snow. Cheers. Jim

Great stuff Scott! I used bicycle hydraulic disc brakes on my Nieuport 11 with a single master cylinder on the stick. More than ample for keeping things under control taxiing.

G'day Scott, Yikes ! As a retired Registered General Nurse, I Empathise strongly on your Learning-Curve, Regarding Injury. When I started out in YT I posted a Series of Videos regarding Aggressive First Aid For a Degloving Wound to a Middle Finger... Commencing with Unbandaging after 5 days. It worked. I avoided Amputation, And after a few months All was healed-up. Hot Salty Water Immersions, Twice or thrice daily, will cure Most Wounds. In the 1980s the Post-Operative Nursing Treatment after Haemorrhoid Surgery.... (You cannot get any Bacteriologically "Dirtier" than that !"...) Was to have the patient spend Half an hour, daily, in a Hot Bath of Hypertonic Saline Solution. I have literally cured & healed 5 Lacerated Grey Kangaroo Ankles, On 3 Does, all injured while fleeing a Powerline-Inspection Helicopter, With a big Joey in the Pouch, Failing to clear a Sheepfarmer's fence. Being wild, they refuse to be touched... So I treat them with a Sterile (Boiled) Water + Salt (Hypertonic) Saline Solution, via a 1-litre Garden Sprayer. The Salt kills Bacteria. Kangaroos love Salt, so they Lick the Salted Wound... Saliva debrides Necrotic Tissue. So between me & the Salt & them licking their Wounds... They come to me twice daily for tteatment, and it takes between 3 & 5 months Dangle your Finger in Hot Salty Water... The heat will Vasodilate the tissue, Increasing bloodflow, and Oxygenation in the Effected Tissue...; While the Hypertonic Saline Solution will Osmotically Suck the Oedema out of the Infected Tissue... Your missus is a Chiropractor, as I recall matters ; get her to explainificate the workings of Pre-Antibiotic Infection-Control for ye...(!), I think thap probabubblie the Back-Crackers might get a bit more Microbiology & Immunology under training..., than the RAAF instils into their Technicians...(?). Look in my "Grey Kangaroos..." Playlist to see the Cut Kangaroos being Treated & healed. I think all the Aggressive First Aid stuff is in my "Mad Scientist Videos..." Playlist (?), But it was a dozen years ago, And 3.3k uploads Back in time... After the Apocalypse, When we're properly in the Mad Max thymes...(!) ; Hot Saline Irrigation Or Immersion..., will be Right up there, as the VERY Most reliable Treatment for Infected Extremities... In my humble prognostication (!). Keep on keepin' on... And "Yay Team - Chloe...!" I wish my Dottarchild would co-operate in my YT videos, Let alone run the Camera...! Twelve years ago she offered to put a Phone-Cam Video of mine on her Channel, to better publicise the results of my "SunFoil Project..." ( I have a Playlist on that topic...). And after 600 views she made This Channel, bookmarked it onto My Prepaid Mobile Phone... And thus, Warbles the Uncomputered is STILL on YT, But my Dottarchild steadfastly Refuses to even appear in my Videos..., Let alone help make any of them... Enjoy this phase, And Foster it..., Whenever possible. The longer your daughter wants to hang out with you, and help out, being Daddy's Girl...; the better she'll likely be When choosing a Boyfriend who reminds her of who she Imprinted on as being her idea of an Ideal Partner.... Play the Long Game..., Kinda thing. At the moment, you're in front of the Power/Drag Curve...; Keep it that way, As long as possible...(!). And, if/when ever it feels as if you have No Control...; Then be sure, As when in an Inverted Flat Spin - to Stop Reaching for Control...(!). Let go, and Wait for Recovery to Effect Itself ; via the "magic" of Stable Dynamic Instabilities, After the manner of Decollage damping out Pitch Oscillations... You & your daughter are looking good at the moment, I hope to see this continue (!). Just(iably ?) sayin', Stay safe... ;-p Ciao!

Still looking good mate. Sorry to hear you’ve had a few painful things happen over the Christmas break. I vote for brakes, not sure how best you’d go about it, but that rudder is pretty useless during landing and taxiing on Rosie the pup. This kit might be a bit more docile and forgiving than Rosie but I think they’d be handy. Also, make the turtle deck strong enough to sit on be it aluminium or ply. It just makes sliding in or out of the cockpit easier. Hope your finger heals quickly mate

Thanks Don, yep the ergonomics of the brakes will be interesting. I’ll look at other aircraft no doubt. Better to have and not want I guess. Cheers

G’day Scott, just looking at your rudder bellcrank, I can’t see very well but it looks like the cable attach points are both forward of the rudder front spar. In my opinion the cable attach points should be directly opposite the centreline of the rudder spar. What you have might cause the slack rudder cable to go tight. The elevator bellcranks might be the same but I really can’t see these properly at all. Cheers

I would rally like to know who designed that steel tube fuselage. Apart from the totally missing front spar crossmember (what was he thinking???) , the rear flying wire attachments are also highly dubious.; the lines of force from the wires are supposed to pass through the node of the welded junction. These are way offset. This will result in continuous flexing of the are under load and we're talking a few thousand pounds load in those wires. This "designer" should not be allowed near aircraft. It's not typical of the Basler designs.

Yes, my fuselage does seem different to others. Maybe a case of send it to Australia.

Wiki says the original was 930lbs empty, 1453lbs gross. Pinch of salt figures really, as there were many variants with different engines and other specs over its service life. Looks like you’re in the right ballpark.
