This fight was brutal and horrifically one-sided until the very end! This marks a major chapter in the overall story, and I'm sure the stakes will get even higher! If you want to see the next episode's reaction right now, check out our Patreon: www.patreon.com/semblanceofsanity

I don't think they show this in the anime, but there have been instances in the manga where they show that Ash keeps extra cases of bullets strapped onto his ankles, which is why he has enough ammo. Those kinds of details always bother me so I just thought I'd throw it out here.

I understand that people like finding reasons and excuses and whatever to elevate this fight, but none of the fan theories about Arthur that keep floating around are true. He was just that - a petty guy who hated Ash for being and having everything he ever wanted, who never saw all the shit Ash had to go through to get there. He wanted the respect Ash had from the street kids, he wanted his territory, he wanted his mafia connection and Dino's approval, and because Ash got all these things he never managed to obtain, he hated him. Arthur doesn't need any sappy backstory about a non-existent sister getting killed because of Ash to make sense as a character, and personally, I think it actually makes him less impactful to imagine that. Because then it would be something completely out of Ash's control that made Arthur hate him, which is way more lame as a storytelling piece.

I think it should be said that Eiji's goal in this is not so much the determined pursuit to stay by Ash's side for the sake of a romantic relationship, but literally for the preservation of Ash's humanity. He is the ONLY one who knows who Ash really is. Everyone else, even his gang, sees him in the image he was forced to create to survive. Without Eiji, Ash's existence is narrowed to being a Gang Leader, a murderer, and the Devil. Without Eiji, the kind, compassionate, cheeky, soft-hearted person that Ash is will literally cease to exist because that side of him can't survive in his "world". Through this ordeal with Dino and Arthur, Ash is being forced to become more violent, brutal and immoral, and Eiji can see how he's inching ever so slowly to a place he won't be able to come back from. He's literally his moral anchor at this point. So while it may seem naive for Eiji to go this far, he feels obligated to do so, because he's literally the only who can bring him back from the edge and remind him of who he really is.

I think Eiji did not call Ash's name in the sense of "Ganbatte!" "Ganbatte!" is a word used to inspire people. But at this time, Eiji didn't want Ash to fight or kill people, so he called his name. His actions have resulted in a bad direction, but he just sees Ash as one person, one friend, not a devil, not a beast.

And, You will notice that many people in this show refer to Ash as a demon or a beast, but Eiji always treats him as one precious human being.

12:44: "At least Ash will get to a proper doctor." Me: "Hah. Hehehe. Haaaa." This next little arc's gonna be fun. Man, I'm gonna miss this OP! I love the next one, too, but something about the energy of this one always hits. The tone of each OP & ED matches the show's corresponding cour so well. The last ED always hurts soooo much. Gone will be the OP/ED's of energy and ambition. Next up: pain. Just pain.

I always love that Arthur is in white and Ash is in black throughout this fight -- And Arthur being voiced by the same VA as Reiner, Sousuke Yamazaki, Nezumi -- he can voice that troubled, brooding character so well, and he was perfect for Arthur. This is one of my favorite episodes in the series -- the symbolism, the composition on the train, the tension of the knife fight, the ending -- and it's ONLY the halfway point. It's all....downhill from here.

22:40 We do have his name, he introduced himself the very first time he appeared 😭 He's little baby Sing, the youngest actively fighting character in the show (he's only 14!! Little baby child, I will never get over how tiny he is compared to all of this shit). As minor as he may feel, he's my favorite character. You'll get to know him better in the next episodes, and I'm sure you'll love him as well. He's just a child in need of guidance and protection with too much responsibility on his shoulders.

Eiji is not dumb but he's so removed from this world that he doesn't even think calling Ash's name would bear major consequences DX. When I first watched this ep I was like: "DON'T!! NOT HIS NAME!!!" And then Eiji called his name :v I don't think you guys should think too much about Arthur. Honestly I feel his parts of the story are the ones I feel the most "meh" about? He is not a very impactful character overall. But Sing!! Finally got to shine!! He's the most competent 14 year old that isn't anime-typical op I've ever seen. Plus his sass XD. I love him so much. (once again reccomending the bros to watch Link Click and Hyouka)

**Spoiler, if you haven't watched the entire show, don't read** The fact that Eiji was the distraction here, Ash's real weakness, it really makes Ash's death SO much more sad. If he wouldn't have gotten that letter, would he have lived because he stayed on-guard? Could he have actually made it to Japan? Anyways I'll be crying over here in the corner pretending that the end was left open-ended, even though it wasn't.

*spoiler, don't read if you haven't finished the anime/manga* I highly doubt Ash would have gone to Japan if it wasn't from the letter, tbh. Also, that Ash sequence is kind of beautiful -if you ignore the mangaka's words and don't analyse the ending aside from what i'm about to talk about. Him letting down his guard is not really him being distracted, but him leaving behind his prior self (with all that includes, from his first rape to now) to finally have a nice normal life with Eiji, something he thought he would never get to have nor deserves. He finally feels hope for himself

I think Arthur simply hated Ash because he knows he can't come close to matching him, he couldn't win against Ash even when he pulled a fast one behind his back. everyone trusts and respects Ash, they only followed Arthur out of fear. Arthur believes Ash is the only thing/person in his way of getting everything he wants but he's just a thug who would fail sooner or later even if Dino kept giving him chances and help in the previous episode everyone's shocked how Ash behaves because he only attacks people in self defense never as revenge until now but we also see Ash hate himself for what he's becoming. he doesn't really have a choice of taking Arthur on as the deaths would continue he feels this is the only way to end things the only way to re gain everyone's trust and respect , not that has disappeared completely, is to give Arthur a fair fight and for himself as well he was becoming what he hates in Arthur but he doesn't want Eiji to see this because he would only see it as murder and Ash could have walked away

This is complete head-cannon but I've heard from a few people that they think the girl that Ash liked (the one that that was killed) was Arthur's sister, given the fact that the gf convo happened the same night of the fight. I stick with this theory because it makes the "honorable" fight a bit more understandable, even with Shorter's murder. Also, the reload thing has bothered me too but the manga shows that Ash has ammo taped to his calves. I have no idea why the anime didn't include it because the lack of it really hurts this episode.

Arthur resesnted Ash's existence and I think that's enough. Without Ash, Arthur would have been a gang leader, maybe Dino's 'favored" one, respected/feared, powerful. In his own mind, at least. Ash showed him up in every way and Arthur isn't the type to admit to himself that there is someone out there who is just more talented than him (though subconsciously, he has to know it and hate himself). Plus, Arthur would know nothing of what Ash had to go through. Even if Arthur was another of Dino's "boys" (child prostitutes) he must have mentally/emotionally dealt with that in a different way - believed it made him special maybe, looked at it as a necessary stepping stone, etc. I think everyone watching this the first time yells at the screen, "Eiji, DON't call to Ash!" and then groans and facepalms when he does just that. Eiji - we love you but you can be so clueless at times, it hurts to watch. Say goodbye to the OP and ED, time for a new cour and new songs.

As far as I remember from the manga, Cain Blood arranged for Sing Soo Ling and the Chinese to be there as extra back up in hiding because Ash warned Cain from the beginning that Arthur was going to try something underhanded. And even if Ash didn’t warn him, Cain would probably expect it because everyone knows the story of how Ash cut Arthur’s fingers off

So there are two layers to Ash and Arthur's relationship. The first, I believe is only a theory/fanon- the girl Ash liked when he was 14 and got killed because people thought she was his girlfriend, was Arthur's sister, so Arthur blames him for her death. The second, and again I can't remember if it's confirmed/official or only implied/assumed, is that Arthur, like Ash, was one of the kids Golzine was grooming, but where Arthur had to fight for his position, Ash was naturally talented/favored/just better, so he is jealous of him and blames him for taking his place as the favorite. As you noted, the two of them are very similar in coloring (blond, green eyes, very light skinned) and general body shape- looks like Golzine (burn in hell) had a type. Just some food for thoughts. Great reaction as always! Can't wait for next week!

Close, but Arthur is specifically blond with blue eyes not with green eyes like Ash has (and which is the colour Dino sickeningly says in an earlier episode is what he and his 'customers' prefer).
