koito is so relatable as someone on the aromantic spectrum in the wanting to deny having any romantic feelings/attraction, because she essentially just learned about aromance from maki and feels found and validated by this identity, but she still doesn't know/realize that being aromantic is a spectrum and not a binary, so now in her head she dangerously feels like recognizing having any romantic feelings would invalidate all of her confusion and suffering and alienation due to her arospec-ness up until now (and the present included). she went from feeling defective and different and wanting to be like everyone else, to suddenly having her experience validated and finding an identity she belongs to, and now her goal has 180ed from 'i want to reach it (romance)' to 'i musn't (or it would invalidate the basis of my identity)'. little personal story: i went through something similar, and at some point in the opposite direction: refusing to call myself aromantic because i do experience romance to a certain extent and in a certain way, so i'm not "really" aro. but it's only painful and doesn't help anyone to deny/repress either parts of my experience. when the answer (realizing it's a spectrum. and also labels are created to fit real experiences not the other way around) is so simple! accepting and embracing that it's a spectrum and that i CAN be both aro and [orientation] and that it's not contradictory really seems like the clouds have lifted. i like the term 'greyromantic' for myself btw :)

not to mention she is under nanami's pressure of not falling in love with her, so another reason why she would deny any romantic feelings she might have

God I feel this so hard. As a greyromantic as well, I went through a lot of similar struggles. Especially as a hopeless romantic who, much like Yuu, always loved romance stories growing up I had a hard time reconciling that I was in love with the idea of love but didn’t actually feel much of it myself. Or rather experienced it differently than most others around me. Not to mention all the forcing myself to “check all the boxes” in order to be valid that I’ve seen queer people of all kinds go through. A manga that I really like that addresses all of this (and specifically from an aro/ace spec lens too!!) is “Is Love the Answer” It’s just a 1 volume short story but I felt so seen in it that it was almost uncanny lol.

Thank you for sharing your story. I had a very similar experience as well, I used to call myself aromantic when I realized I was *different* from other people, and then realizing that it’s a lot more complicated and fluid really made things difficult when I did have my first relationship and I actually could understand that I was demisexual/romantic, I just got push back from it because “everyone basically experiences romance like a Demi sexual/romantic” when, no. It’s not the same, even if it looks like it on the outside. Coming into terms with it and the specific challenges in understanding that really helped me a lot, and I’m glad I didn’t cave into the generalizations

This is one of my top ten shows forever, probably this episode helped it get there. The realization that you are capable of feeling you never expected. The demisexual experience so good

Jacob's points about this story's take on the individual understanding of love for each of the characters makes me all the more sad that Skip and Loafer came so low in the last poll, because this just reaffirms my thoughts that they would absolutely nail the discussions on it and just generally vibe with the show a lot

I really liked that discussion that Maki & Koito had as she is still trying to figure out her own feelings. There is a lot that is missed in comparison to the manga that I hope they do read it. I also just love we get to see more Miyako! That song and the running scene really hits you. 😭

I love that song, called "rise", by Riko Azuna. She made a professional music career debut by singing the OP credit song and rise for this show.

I want to go off a rant and just say why I love these characters based off this episode: I love how Maki makes it clear that Koito isn't the same as him, just based off her expression. They may experience similar feelings when it comes to romance, but he knows Koito has formed an emotional connection with Touko. A lot of people make the assumption that demisexuality doesn't exist because "isn't that just falling in love with someone?" No. It takes time for someone who's demisexual to form a bond. We see with Koito that at first, she didn't really care if Touko kissed her. She also didn't have feelings for anyone before Touko and we see her often zooming out of conversations when it comes to love. But as this episode goes on, we see love finally...Blooming into Yuu. I'm also glad Maki is happy watching from the sidelines. A lot of representation of asexuality in media is often people who are either cold hearted or feel as if they're broken (which isn't a bad thing, but it just presents a narrow view). Maki is neither. And as someone who's also a part of that spectrum, Maki is such a breath of fresh air content with who he is and sends the message that "it's good to fall in love, but it's also okay if you don't."

The extremely well-performed "Bloom Into You: The Play" franchise did carry the story further along via three live theater productions including "Regarding Saeki Sayaka," but they were only for the Japan domestic fans. It's too bad the anime had to end where it did for the worldwide fanbase.

I feel like before the realization, Koito wasn't thinking of kissing Nanami as any kind of big deal, but afterward that changed. It's a very demisexual kind of moment, figuring out which feelings mean what about who, and not understanding why something that was no big deal feels suddenly portentous, like it might crush you if you make a wrong step. Maybe on some level Koito feels like the first time she kisses Nanami ought to be something more than just a reward smooch in an equipment shed. Maybe she feels like taking the initiative herself has become somehow more significant, but since she hasn't processed any of the stuff that she felt during the sports day yet it only feels like something isn't right.

very good analysis which i think lines up exactly with this point in the story. Yuu is such a well written demi character it warms my heart.

I think Yuu is worried, worried that if she kissed Nanami, she might lose control of herself and react in a way that Nanami will figure out that she start see Nanami as someone special, which would end their relationship. That’s why Yuu believe that it’s the line that should not be crossed over.

I love Sayaka's facial expression when she was standing by for Yuu's baton. There is this gentleness and maybe a sense of trust in that face which made me think that Sayaka's feeling towards Yuu now developed into something more substantially positive, even with what is happening between Touko and Yuu. Sayaka's heart is something else.

Back in 2019 there was an event called "Toumi-Higashi High School All-Student Conference." They had the main three VAs plus ones for Maki and Doujima. In the second show, the three VAs were asked what their favorite scenes were, and Yuuki Takada, who played Yuu, chose the storage kiss scene. The entire auditorium burst into a roar of laughter when Ms. Takada said so which made her blush like a tomato. Because each favorite scene was to be played on a jumbotron, Ai Kayano, who played Sayaka, got shook up and said, "Wait, wait. Are you sure we are going to watch THIS with all these people?" When the kiss scene finally got going on the huge screen, Taichi Ichikawa, who played Maki, started giving a live commentary, like, "Yup, right here, I was watching them." "Here, I just walked over for a different angle. Yup." People were laughing so hard that the oxygen was rapidly getting depleted in the place.

@@animusswtor4822 The Maki live commentary thing by Mr. Ichikawa was apparently a complete improv, so the other VAs were caught off-guard and laughing just as hard. I would love to get a DVD/BR for that event. Alas, they did not record either of the two live shows that day - what a shame. Just as you yourself say, I love these interaction things by VA cast and staff on a live stage.
