I think Jacobs point is just Sara said it to Rudy with the full intention of him hearing it, doing it for her own sake to feel better about what happened. Rudy did it venting to a friend completely removed from her, never intending to actually say anything like that to her, and only after he was already hurt by her words. They're definitely not equal. One was accidental, and in response to having it done to him by her, the other was intentional to his face wanting him to hear it, when he hadn't done anything wrong.

Jacob is correct here. A lot of reactors missed the distinction and immediately sided with Sara. Personally, I don't think the point is to choose a side and place blame. I see it as a series of unfortunate events, triggered by very bad timing/luck. If the timing was just slightly better, they would be able to talk things out. Considering Sara actually finds out (in the LN) the full story later and wants to apologise but Rudy had already left town.

I really loved the dagger scene because it was such a realistic depiction of the lasting damage living in such a horrible depression would do to someones view on failure. It really put into perspective how much Rudeus was using their groups perception/praise as a crutch even though none of them knew the real him. Soldats such a bro to have been so quick to accept him as soon as Rudeus started actually being himself.
@Twiska

I don't think Jacob explained what he was thinking well enough to Caleb, but I believe this is the gist of it. Sara completely put down Rudy to his face, and Rudy put down Sara to Sol, not expecting Sara to hear. They both said the same thing, "I didn't like him/her that way, who needs him/her?" but Sara intentionally put Rudy down, whereas Rudy did so in private and was overheard. Talking bad about people behind their backs is sort of a right. How else would we vent to our friends? We don't usually mean most of it, but intentionally saying those sorts of things to someone's face is way worse. Sure, both hurt, but the intent makes it sting more, as you know they wanted you to hear it.

But they took out too much of Sara's context. How even being with a Greyrat is something she probably didn't think of. How she thinks about her body, how she cried and wanted to really apologize to Rudy.

@@thesmilingtitan Oh, I know. I'm still salty that they cut out her chapters. But the extra context doesn't change by my above summary. Wasn’t what Sara said kind of a mistranslation? It was supposed to be more like “what a disaster” not even just about him, but blaming herself as well. And it was sort of said under her breath too. Idk if that was actually intentional badmouthing to his face, it was a reaction of a teen that was extremely embarrassed and ashamed. Rudy at least had some time away from the situation when he said all that. Oh, and if you find out your partner is shit talking you like that, you wouldn’t like it. If you do that you’re either extremely immature (Rudy) or a bad person, sorry.

One thing that really shows Soldat as best bro here is: He's the leader of an S-rank adventure team. They are planning to move to another town on the very next day Dude spent his very last night in this town drinking with Rudy all night and even brought him to see "professionals" to try to fix his functional issues. He's really like one of the best bro Rudy could have found, he just has a bad mouth and is very straightforward with words to people he dislikes.
@randomthorn9286

Sara absolutely said something mean, especially the "Awful/Saiaku" at the end. I agree with Jacob that they kind of both messed up. If anything I think knowing the context means Rudy was treated far worse. Sara is completely understandable in all of her reactions, but this really feels like something that can actually be solved by Soldat's advice of running after her and explaining himself. I really like how all characters were written this episode, even Suzanne who probably did not intend to be too mean, simply telling him that what he said was "out of line" but to Rudy that would have felt like daggers coming from someone who had treated him well.

Yeah Caleb is always hilarious to me because you can tell he is pretty biased that way. Jacob is pretty biased as well but he tends to be more biased from a writing point of view. For people that dont understand why Rudeus is so immature about this: Rudeus was in massive depression in the first life so, basically he dont have the same social skills of the average people since he stay in his room without talk or discuss the basic things of life (but he have debate skills like a mature man, like he did with Paul). In his second life, he lose his virginity, but i pretty sure he died virgin in his first life, so the trauma of lose his first love makes sense and that triggers the erection disfunction.

Also the anime skipped the epilogue with Sara's pov at the end, where she founds out about Rudy's actual situation from the nice prostitute The nice prostitute actually gets angry at Sara and tells her off about how awful she was to rudeus and how much damage she dealt to him, Sara realizes she fucked up hard and tries to seek out Rudeus but he had already left with Soldat, she goes back to her room and cries away at her mistake It was a car crash of a situation, both individuals had no experience and were not prepared to face the situation: -Sara could have noticed how astonished rudeus was when he didn't get hard for her, but was too focused on thinking it was because of her and tried to deflect the situation making it look like she never actually felt anything for rudeus and was doing this out of obligation, which makes it way worse -Rudeus could have just shut up and not rant out loud, bad mouthing Sara

It becomes very apparent in the beginning of next episode, but that scene with Elinalise was after a time skip after Rudy left the city with Soldat. You can kinda guess it by the fact that Rudy hasn't been shown to kill a dragon yet, much less in a party of less than 20 people, and the fact that Soldat said that they were leaving to go to a dungeon not fight a dragon. So that scene takes place after their original mission that they left for for sure. Tho I don't blame you for not noticing since I watched the episode, and at least 5 other reactors watch it, and I never noticed it until rewatching it now

Both of them said mean thins from insecurity and as a defense mechanism. Rudy's was meaner, but he didn't told it to her she just overheard it accidentally, while she acutally intednded to say thse things to him. So at the end when you started talking about Paladins of Fertility I immediately thought of my Tabaxi Barbarian. I made him for the sole purpose of having as many children as possible, which means at every opportunity he tries to use seduction. If a Fertility Oath was a thing I would change his class to Paladin instead of Barbarian. Maybe an alternate universe version of him, since I am currently playing him in a game so it would be weird to suddenly change his class and playstyle.

Fun reaction and good episode. D&D (officially) tends to be fairly reticent about this, due to its position marketing to young folks, but since the early 1980s other RPGs have covered this sort of thing (notably Rune Quest with some of its religious cults, GURPS (which tries to cover everything), and various third-party d20 supplements.)

17:00 I don't think that phrase means what you think it means. "Quid pro quo" means "this for that" or: 'a favor or advantage granted or expected in return for something.' I definitely get where Jacob was coming from. Both Rudeus and Sara showed their ages here in the way they handled things. Sara absolutely made assumptions because of her self esteem, and in turn DID turn her disappointment into venom for Rudy to his face. "I only did this out of obligation" is absolutely a roundabout way of saying, "I wouldn't have slept with you at all if I wasn't trying to avoid owing you a favor for something you did." Following that up with "awful" or "the worst" and a look of disappointment or disgust as well? That was a childish reaction. Rudy also handles it childishly. Granted, he did open up and investigate the issue innocently at first, but he put himself in an open environment, (a public street outside of a public business) and carelessly intoxicated himself beyond reason to the point he was airing private matters in a public setting. Venting to a friend privately is one thing, inebriating yourself publically when you know you're doing it in an unwell mental state is another. Regardless, it feels organic and I love that it felt like real dreams rather than plot to get Rudy to leave town. His buddy saw him at his worst and said "my friend isn't in a safe mindset, so I need to bring him with me so I can make sure he isn't a danger to himself". Really endeared me to Sol after already finding him charismatic. Consent! But also listen to your body people! Consider when you decline consent: why aren't you giving it? Do you not know this person enough to be comfortable? Are you insecure in yourself and need validation? Are you not attracted to the person? Are the specific acts themselves making you feel uncomfortable or unsafe? Is it purely a moral thing? (Intoxication, lack of contraception, potential infidelity). These questions will help you better navigate future interactions!
