SOTTOSOPRA (UPSIDE-DOWN) - Fusion of the image and the interior in dim light
PROJECT BY YASUSHI MATSUMOTO
An experience-type installation based on the concept of the "camera obscura," bringing a poetic and fantastic scenery with small images floating in dim light -- like the whole world condensed in one atmosphere.
Today, the digital imaging tends to attract more people's attention, and it is a fact that the advanced image technology does carry a lot of hidden possibilities and its development will still continue. However, we should not forget about the "analog" things that possesses the humanity. In other words, we have to pay more constant attention to the human sentiments and senses.
This installation doesn't use any digital technology, but instead it gets back to the origin of the camera, only using the optical technology applying the structure of the "camera obscura," letting our visitors experience the "analog-type" human emotion and sensation.
"SOTTOSOPRA (UPSIDE-DOWN) - Fusion of the image and the interior in dim light"
A solid sphere of φ30 cm, filled with water, is embedded in the wall, with a screen located in front of it. The external view is projected on this screen through the sphere. All images are projected "upside-down" on the screen, showing the real-time movements of the external view. Like confining the whole world in this atmosphere, several small bubble-like images float in the darkness, bringing a poetic and fantastic scenery.
In addition, a wine glass filled with water, covered with a shade of frosted glass, is set by the window located in the center. This art enables our visitors to better understand the structure and concept of the "camera obscura." All arts presented here are created using only the optical technology.
In Japan, it is historically said that there is a special meaning when we observe things in the opposite way. "motion and stillness," "lightness and darkness," "true and false".. we hope that you can capture a new emotion and sensation from the space created in this installation.
