You're really tapping into what makes Van Halen "Van Halen" - the combustible combination of David Lee Roth's soul/motown/dance sensibilities with the Van Halen brothers' hard rock/classical influences and Eddie's genius. Add Michael Anthony's thumping bass and soaring background vocals and you have a band that is, in my opinion, different than any that came before or after.

The only thing I would add to that great description is the obvious jazz influence from their Dad which is likely where they get their swing and swagger. The "Van Halen shuffle" is unmatched by any other band. SO many great VH tunes that swing. Several on this album alone.

Arguably my favorite VH song... If you MUST pick a favorite. Pure Van Halen. "The soul scream..." ... Dave Roth says he got that trying to copy Aretha Franklin - THAT is the soul. Peace.

I was 14 in 1978 when Runnin' With The Devil first played on my local rock radio station & yes, I thought DLR was black until I saw the album cover. All these years later & it still doesn't get "old" to me. It's so great to see young people liking it too. They were such a talented, unique band with their own genre, really.

The Mighty Van Halen can be intense, hard AND fun! Alex swings...Often overlooked, Michael Anthony's baseline is ol' school swinging rock (btw, the high backing vocals are Michael). King Edward knows exactly how much to put into a solo...Ok...so you have the Van Haleniacs' attention...you have to Mugnify Van Halen self-titled (first album). This classic went platinum and sold well into the teen-millions depending upon who you read. It changed the face of rock and music in general. You're entering Van Haleniac status....Let's do it!

If you can listen to this song and not wanna move, you might be clinically dead! Fans know, but it’s not common knowledge that Edward and Alex‘s father was a clarinet player in the big swing bands before they kind of dropped off. They both have been listening to those swing type rhythms their entire lives, and you can hear it all throughout their career in their playing. Great examples of them doing that swing boogie shuffle would be I’m The One from Van Halen 1, and Hang ‘Em High from Diver Down. They still keep that swing feel, even at 200 miles an hour!

Nice reaction. A critic complained once maybe twice that Van Halen only sings songs about woman. So later they wrote a song about a car. It still sounds like they're singing about women. Lol they're singing about what they know. This album is got to be a 12 out of 7 IMO. Still listen to the songs from this album. Also love the diversity of the songs musically.

This song is bad for driving in the car. Tempo and that bass rhythm, I defy you to stay below the speed limit. Simply awesomeness. I think the VH boys during this era had a lot of girls around the backstage door. I suspect there was some influence to the lyrics from the lifestyle at that time. They were the quintessential party band back then, and they had the chops to draw the crowds. Michael Anthony (bass player) had a bass that was shaped like a bottle of Jack Daniels in case you didn't know. You're almost on you journey's end of this album and I think you'll see with one foot out the door a hypothetical one night stand comes to an end. You should review the last 2 together as Sunday afternoon in the park is instrumental, short, and it leads right into the last track. Peace Mug. It's been fun listening to your take on VH.

The Carlton dance!!!! Ba ha ha ha. Great reaction. Yes, Van Halen used dynamics, playing softer and louder in different parts of the song. Today's music is all red-lined so everything is loud all the time. It fatigues the ears. Music in the 70's and 80's breathed. Put on any Led Zeppelin album and you will hear soft parts and loud parts.

Love that you picked up on the swing of this song. Eddie gets a lot of credit, rightly so, but Alex is one of the most unique drummers and plays with a lot of swing style drumming. Their father Jan was a big band era musician and you’re the first I’ve heard that’s picked that up👍 Check out diver down album, big bad bill is their dad playing clarinet, pretty cool. What you call "hollow" is often called a "ring" on the snare... and, yup, a great sound. The drum is ringing. After all these decades, my memory still expects the bass getting turned down in the mix those few bars in. Kinda funny, almost like the burned-in memories of where 8-tracks fade songs out before switching!
