Why do you think he was writing for the black audience specifically?

It's his experience. His personal experience doesn't apply to "the other," meaning white people.

@@justinlindemann3505 Interesting perspective. Personally, I thought that he was writing to "all", sharing his experience with everyone. In the first paragraph, he writes, " This meaning is not without interest to YOU, Gentle Reader; for the problem of the 20th ce. is the problem of the color line"--meaning the problem is the color line, and it belongs to the 20th ce. and who reside within it....meaning everyone. Anyway...just my take.

@@jenniferkerr1638 I don't disagree with you. But, as a white male, the most I can do is empathize with his experience. It's not something that I will ever understand completely or experience.
