Because of the shade given by the coconut trees, any tree in the garden takes a while to grow up. The bilimbi(bilin) tree that's in the corner had to face the same fate but this season it grew up enough to give fruit. There are bunches of bilimbi fruit all over the tree and I remembered my brother when it was time to pick the bilimbi tree. Since I couldn't find him, I thought I'd do it myself and went to the tree and this is where I found him, under the tree eating bilimbis.
I decided to make bilimbi chutney because the fruit I picked a few days earlier has been dried. My aunt also loves to make bilimbi chutney and that always comes out delicious so I followed her recipe. My brother loved my innovation of the bilimbi juice with a kick of pepper powder, he has been making it himself these few days, and it's doubly a good thing because bilimbi helps to control your sugar levels.
Even though it's the Sri Lankan New Year season, it's a tough time for all of us around the world. Although we followed the traditions and the rituals at home this year, we didn't have our usual extravagant feasts and this is why I thought to bring you the bilimbi story.
