the bolt location might be to keep the cap from being reversed. they know full well when they make these things that orientation matters and they can never make them all the same. also it is fairly common for things to be hand drilled even when you expect precision. a lot of an airframe is hand drilled in place because the airframe moves. the whole wing on an f-16 is bolted on with hand drilled holes and when a mount needs replacement it has to be copied from the damaged one. no 2 are identical

Thank you very much. Working on a 1942 Lathe, with a super sloppy spindle. Cheers!

I like the wooden shim patterns. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I'll have to do this to my Southbend before long.

It might be possible they drilled the holes like that so you couldn't put the bearing cap on the wrong way.

Bearing caps are patterned drilled to keep you from putting the cap on backwards or reversed.The holes wont line up.

I know this is an ancient video but FWIW, South Bend plain bearing caps use "laminated" peel shims to adjust the oil clearance, while the bar in the spindle "works" the preferred method to load the spindle id to pry up with a bar directly under the chuck adapter and a general rule of thumb is when installing the cap you may need to only lightly snug the bolts, over torquing may begin to crush brass laminated shims, also you may need to "half shim" one side to arrive to a good fit.

I really like this video I just did my adjustment on a 1931 11 inch SB on my lathe where you indicated from in the front is a collar which retains a wick.

And if you use Extreme Pressure Grease instead of oil?????? Is it designed for grease or only for oil? I think grease can last more than oil in that bronze bushing.

I'm not sure about the 9 inch swing South Bend, I would like to see a video on that though. I ran a 9 once. I seem to remember the bearing cap was only split in the front, don't know how to adjust it.

Can you adjust a little south bend lathe in the same way ? I have a little late and it has vibrations when I am working without the point ?

Thanks for posting this video. It helped to shim my SB 10L. Love the bra's in the back round. I thought chicks get hot for bikes and cars not lathes. My wife doesn't care much for my lathe!

When I started on my old (1962) STANKO 1A616 I had a problem with too much play sidewise - then spindle should be aligned with the travel of your carriage - it seem like you CAN'T do such an adjustment on your lathe - right ? I think another "youtuber" (Donald R. Cossitt) maybe had this problem too - he got tappered threads.

the offset drilling might be to make sure the cap gets put on the same way each time because of the bearing wear
@phooesnax

I agree. if they were symmetrical then the cap could go in 180 degrees out. This is intentional
@MrRichinil

they might have done the offset hole to positive locate the bearing so you cant flip the bearing cap around,just a thought

Do a search on Google for "Keep Your Lathe in Trim." It's available in pdf file format for download. Search for other stuff on South bend too. There are parts lists and manuals, all in pdf format. South Bend is out of business. What is your serial number, catalog number and size of lathe?

Great video. You should do more. I was just looking at my headstock and noticed a few thou' of endfloat so it's good to find out that the adjuster is on a screw thread. I just bought a WWII 10L 8187Z with cast iron base and leg but it's missing it's leadscrew and gearbox. They come up on eBay though. The spindle feels silky smooth and no signs of any scratching from grit and runs super quiet. I also have a 9" swinger with a 3 foot bed. I keep him for making Dwarf porn! Yuk, yuk, yuk!

There is no grunting and groaning,, just roughly 70 pounds of pressure… I don’t understand why these people think it’s OK to change up and modify these procedures when South Bend specifically tells you how to do it,, unless that chuck is permanently attached to that spindle which I doubt then it should be removed… oh and if that test bar is sticking out 1 foot from the end of the truck then it’s actually sticking out 1 foot plus the length between the jaws and the spindle on top of that.. Catering or dealing in thousandths of an inch you are in no way accurate
@Militarycollector
2 жыл бұрын
That’s not the way to do that with the chuck on there.. your going through the chuck and whatever the hell is going on with that rather than directly attaching that bar through the spindle and nothing else….
