On Friday, Hurricane Ian made another landfall in the U.S., this time in South Carolina. It made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, then taking aim at North Carolina as a post-tropical cyclone.
The second landfall on the U.S. mainland came as Floridians surveyed the damage days after the storm battered the state. Ian is expected to wreak havoc on numerous states along the East Coast as it moves inland over the weekend.
In South Carolina, trees have been toppled, roads flooded and over 69,000 households had already lost power. Throughout the day, power came back slowly in these states as rescue efforts continued in Ian's wake.
In Myrtle Beach, waves were pushing against the city's boardwalk tourist area, flowing over where thousands of tourists typically fill the wide sandy stretch. Cars were left abandoned in the road, having stalled when the storm surge flooded their engines.
Parts of the Cherry Grove Pier, Apache Pier and 2nd Avenue Pier collapsed Friday afternoon as Hurricane Ian made landfall.
Hurricane Ian has caused major flooding throughout the Grand Strand, the piers are among many structures downed by the storm surge. In southwest Florida, authorities and volunteers were still assessing the damage.
