with all the in crop spraying of fungicide, insecticide, and herbicides, took into buying spray drones and build a service trailer. five drones can cover as many acres a day as 2 sp sprayers without crop damage from wheels. they can also go when the ground is wet. much cheaper than a plane and safer to operate. less water use and better coverage deep into the canopy due to the down draft.

These guys have single fields that are bigger than most American operations have for total acreage. They have several fields that are upwards of 5000 acres in single field. With an operation this size I don’t think drones are economically viable for them right now. That could all change in the very near future though.

It is currently illegal in Canada to apply crop protection products with a drone and likely will be for a few years yet.

Got an observation and a question. We just travelled through Southern Alberta and Southern Saskatchewan today and am wondering why only irrigation is used in Southern Alberta but literally none in Southern Saskatchewan Mike keeps saying how dry it has been, wouldn’t irrigation work in these conditions? The irrigation units were running full bore most places in Alberta, then abruptly stopped once we entered Saskatchewan.
