South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes voiced strong criticism against the government following Qatar Airways' decision to shift its operations from Dabolim Airport to the newly developed Mopa Airport.
Speaking to reporters on Friday morning, Fernandes accused the government of applying undue pressure on airlines to move to the privately managed Mopa Airport in North Goa.
“There has been consistent pressure on the airlines to shift their operations to a private airport managed by the GMR Group, Past statements from cabinet ministers of the Goa Government confirm that there has been pressure from GMR on airline operators to move out of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) managed Dabolim Airport. Our prediction that Dabolim Airport will slowly decline is coming true as major airlines are transitioning their operations to Mopa.” said Fernandes
Fernandes highlighted the negative consequences of this shift, particularly concerning employment.
“The migration of major airlines will lead to significant unemployment, especially among the ground staff and other workers of Dabolim Airport. This move will have a cascading effect on businesses associated with the airline industry, including shacks, starred hotels, and small outlets across South Goa,” he said.
Fernandes also connected the decision to broader political influences, alleging interference from the highest levels of government.
“It is disheartening that Qatar Airways decided to shift operations just two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Qatar. The BJP government is prioritizing the interests of crony capitalists over the well-being of local Goans. However, I will not let Goans down and will address this issue in Parliament on behalf of all Goans.” said Fernandes
Reflecting on the public's reaction, Fernandes warned that the government might face backlash from the people.
“We must remember that the power of the people is supreme in any democratic government. There is a growing movement on social media where Goans have decided to boycott Qatar Airways. The airline will face consequences from the people who previously relied on it for travel to Europe and Gulf regions. Goans are now urging one another to use alternative airlines operating from Dabolim,” said Fernandes
In closing, Fernandes expressed confidence that the people of Goa will hold the government accountable.
“The people will soon teach the BJP a good lesson. Social media is buzzing with this new movement, and the airlines may have to pay the price for ignoring their loyal customers after bowing to government pressure,” said Fernandes
