Tokyo is a much larger city than London, so why doesn't Tokyo see anywhere near the same amount of crime?

are you suggesting the correlation between cities and the amount of crime within them is solely down to the size of the city?

@@jayess9345 I'm asking if you know what factors would lead to a lower crime rate in Tokyo vs. London? At the beginning of the video you said that London is this giant metropolis so *of course* there must be a fair amount of crime, but I'm saying that just because is a city is big it doesn't mean there is a lot of crime, and I want to know why this is the case for Tokyo but not for London.
@jayess9345

@@djunior874 This is a good question. I would say using Tokyo as a baseline for safety/crime in the comparison of cities around the world is slightly skewed. Tokyo is rated as one of the safest cities in the world and is clearly the outlier when looking at crime as the info on this link demonstrates. livejapan.com/en/article-a0002373/ using the same link above, when looking at other big cities around the world, we can see that there is a lot of crime. my thought, and initial answer would be that there is a myriad of things that lead to such high crime rates: how the country/city is governed, the history of countries, poverty rates, public service funding + many more.
@djunior874

@@jayess9345 nice detailed answer! I think we should be looking at what Tokyo and Taipei etc do right and implementing that in less safe cities like London. A bit of a humble comparative approach could do wonders.

@@djunior874 I think the least we can do is try to elect governments that actually care and who do better at the aforementioned things e.g. public funding/ pay rates/ reducing poverty etc. I personally think that these are some of the key factors to crime, especially in London. thanks for watching. I like to make these vids to generate some sort of conversation so i appreciate the view and the comment!

London is an amazing city, with so many world class, cost neutral (‘free’) experiences in terms of galleries and museums, but of course no two people experience it the same. The more money you have, the more you can insulate yourself from the vagaries of life in London. London is still fairly Dickensian - it’s road by road, sink estates opposite grand townhouses. Outcomes for young people are increasingly divergent too sadly.

@@nozeycow024 I agree completely. Rates of crime, both violent and petty, are a blight on this wonderful city. There is still so much opportunity here, relative to truly poor countries. Why do some young people find themselves pursuing non rational choices which lead them to sub optimal outcomes (i.e. jail or worse!)?

Gentrification also allows people that own their property perhaps bought many years ago or parents bought for a song to cash in their chips and move somewhere cheaper and safer to stay and live , perhaps the coast or head north this can lead to people retiring early / or part time work with a very good nest egg after a cheaper house bought outright. You can buy decent terraced houses in the far North / and into Southern Scotland around 100k no problem. Its a far better quality of life many people tell me after moving North. Of course always winners and losers young people cant buy in the area parents grew up in etc and priced out sadly.

Lived in an estate called ST Matthews on Brixton hill for 12 years in the '90s. There was a murder or stabbing every week even in the little park bordering my estate. There were major crime issues every day like muggings, assaults or shoplifting. In the end I move out of Brixton. Totally unsafe back then. I don't know now.

We lived in Southfields for one year and WE LOVED IT ! I did not see any crime during our time there and having the Wandsworth commons next to us it was magical. It's a super green neighborhood in general. Richmond was also one of our favourites spots to hang out, starting with a cofee from the market and then walking along the river...superb. Too bad that there are tons and tons of planes going over the city, flying super low, every minute. They tax people for their cars, but they find it ok to have planes over peoples heads all day long... This was one of the main reasons we left... Well, that and the big B... Ah no, i remembered now that we did see one thing: we were just going up the stairs of a sports shop that was in mall, when all of a sudden we saw four black boys chasing two white ones, i think they were around 12 yrs old. The two ran into the store, trying to escape but the four caught up and after pushing them on the floor, they started kicking them...eventually then ran in the gallery walking like nothing had happened... What shocked us was that everyone was watching, even the security people... Their lack of reaction was outstanding... Besides that, i saw lots of kids smoking sht... To summ things up, i think the young people there should receive a bit more education especially regarding violence.

@@jayess9345 We are iterating the same point, Thier financial situation can't keep up with the demand for local services, thats what gentrification is. In this case they are all leaseholders weather its a shop, house etc, they dont own the land they rent. I Can't really blame them as anyone would do the same, your not going to keep rents frozen for you tenants/clients out of the kindness of your heart when inflation is rocketing... They need to go somewhere more affordable/suit to thier needs. The same thing happened to me bro, I used to live in west london from age 5 to 28, now i've moved just outside m25. Money talks.

@@Dr.Stacker From what i get from the tone of your message, I think the difference in our arguments is that i don't think it's an inevitable or just thing that people who make a community or location should be pushed out due to greed of individuals or corporations solely for monetary gain. @@queenfarfar100%, its not YOUR community if you don't own the property you live in bro. If you rent or are a council tenant then you should always be on your toes ready to move as you are merely a temporary occupant of the land... where did you get this idea and feeling of entitlement that you should get comfortable? Whats the alternative? How is it fair to stagnate the growth of an in demand area because the renter occupants can't keep up with the pace? I grew up on a council estate myself and watched many freinds and neighbours move along from a posh west london area. Clear your head from the personal attachment and you'll see it was and will always be like this. The word gentrification is just a posh word of describing supply/demand.
