Thanks, and I agree. I was following a guy last year who was hiking Land's End to John O'Groats (LEJOG), our next big trip hopefully, and he showed almost none of the scenic highlights along the way, instead just talking into the phone camera in portrait mode about how people are buying him free pints along the way. Massively wasted opportunity to capture some memorable video highlights in my opinion.

Yeah. That is funny. I wasn't aware of it while filming, but saw it on the edit and watch backs. We had many moments like that where we were ending the days and bad weather was predicted. GillyG would be on the phone asking if the nearby had any dog friendly accom. available. Mostly never happened, but I was willing to foot the bill for a more comfortable, protected night sleep under a hotel roof for the bad weather nights.

Hi Darrell, Happy New year to you both. Love the Videos of your trek. Have walked parts of it in Devon but intend to follow your lead and do the path soon. Very inspiring i must say. I was on Mansands beach the day you arrived, what a coincidence! I live in a village nearby and frequent there with my Granddaughter...it is a lovely safe beach. Some of the locations you have visited are stunning and I thank you both for sharing your trek with us. Have sub'd and look forward to viewing more. Cheers. Regards, Tel Hunter.

This weekend I'd like to do a 20m walk and wild camp along the SWCP. I've been watching your videos - they are great!! Wonder if you could let me know which section on 10 miles ish is the most scenic and remote? I am leaning towards Bantham to Salcombe. Appreciate your advice :)
@DarrellGrundy
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a decent section. Not too remote by our preferred standards, and there'll be plenty of day walkers, but Salcombe is fab as an end of day mooch/pasties/shops/pubs and then you can get the ferry and walk on to find a remote wild camp. We enjoyed the wildness of north Devon more, but it's bit more exposed to the elements. Enjoy!

Great video guys. Your dual commentary on your surroundings/feelings also the ups and downs of Barney (must have been tough on his legs) makes the viewer live the walk with you; it's fantastic! And the great British weather. One day glorious sunshine, the next torrential rain. I've suffered the same on Wainwrights C2C. Looking forward to the last video. '3 go wild in Dorse' :)

Thanks Darrell. I also get your thing about Plymouth. Last year I cycled the Devon coast to coast and it was beautiful, until I arrived in Plymouth. There's nothing wrong with Plymouth per se, it's being so far away from civilization, then you see all the industry there. I then cycled back to Ilfracombe (It was planned that way) but I was glad to leave Plymouth behind. If you have time, check my video.

Hi Mike. Watched your video. Brought back a few memories of the coastal bits. Looks like you had good weather for it. I don't think your photos did true justice to the amount of hills you must have had to cycle up, but the altitude charts and stat. at the end gave us a better idea. Trying not to think about Plymouth. It's taken me 2.5 years to get over it.

Thanks Darrell. Yeah, when I saw you guys heading for Braunton and along the River Taw, it brought back memories for me too. You're right about the steepness of it. It was a killer coming out of Ilfracombe.

Hi guys! I'm a London based guy and I'm off to Exeter with a couple of mates on the weekend and we're going to have a small hike and a few beers on Saturday. I thought that I'd have a quick look on KZitem to see if there were any nice short strolls around that area and came across your video of your 'not so short stroll! . I have to say it's brilliant! I've really enjoyed watching it and I'm looking forward to viewing your other videos when I get the chance. You both seem to have a really cheery disposition and that comes across well (love the backing track as well). PS How much stuff do you carry with you and approximately how much does it weigh? I heard you mention 25kg .... blimey if that is the case then that is bloody impressive!i Happy hiking! Cheers - Dave.
@DarrellGrundy
8 жыл бұрын
Noo then. Yeah, it was a good trip. But rest assured, there were a few of non-cheery moments when the camera wasn't rolling. But that's part and parcel of an expedition like the SWCP. Backpack weight was on the heavy side because we carry slightly more luxury than essential for the wild camping, but keeps us happier. And of course I've got about 5 kilos of camera stuff and laptop, etc. And quality dog food. So my pack weight ranged somewhere between 22 - 28 kilos depending on food / water being carried on the day. I did lose two stones of weight though on 9 weeks of hiking with that lot, so happy with that. Have a good'un in Exeter. I doubt you've got time for a decent hike, but from what we saw, Budleigh Salterton to Sidmouth is one of the more scenic sections close to Exeter if you're wanting a full day stretch of legs, but no pubs between those two (apart from maybe Ladram Bay caravan park for a pint of Fosters in a plastic glass ?). Cheers

Looks beautiful buddy - question about the camping did you find it pretty easy to cruise along and find places to pitch up in the evening without any trouble? Thanks again !
@DarrellGrundy
5 жыл бұрын
Simple answer = yes. Before you set off, most people are rightfully nervous about whether wild camping will be an issue, us included. But once you get on the trail, you get the feel for the land, the map, and the flows of tourists and locals, and you should hopefully get a natural sense of where is a good wild camping place out of sight and out of trouble. In summer, however, you have the extra challenge of very early sunrise and late sunset, so that makes it a bit more challenging to keep out of folks' way, but that's what pubs were invented for, and alarm clock starts for early sunrise pics, coffee, breakfast and on your way

Yeah, exactly. Respect is the key factor here. Don't get camped down until most folks have retired from the track. Leave no trace. And up sticks before the daytime contingent arrives. Enjoy - great track

Hi guys, I love all your videos and have been watching them for a while now. I'm planning a walk from old Harry rocks to Exmouth (the whole Jurassic coast) in Easter and your videos give me a load of help. How did you find it camping on the trail (that's what I intend to do) and is it legal? Thanks so much
@lukegough7495

Just to add, I know the area very well and have walked the majority of the path on different occasions
@DarrellGrundy
8 жыл бұрын
Camping on the trail was fairly easy. I remember a bit of apprehension before we set out, not knowing exactly what terrain is suitable for setting up camp, or whether land owners would seek us out to move us on, or whether locals would give us any trouble. We've done quite a bit of wild camping around the world, but mostly in places where it was permitted. In England, wild camping is not a legal right, but done carefully and respectfully, we found that folks would generally leave you alone, especially given that it is a long National Trail and those doing long sections/the full thing often can't afford to stay in accommodation every night, or choose the more wild/natural experience. If you choose a wild camp site away from popular gathering areas, set down late, leave early, and above all leave no trace, then you should find camping near the trail fairly easy and enjoyable. Ordnance Survey maps and terrain types can help you to look ahead and find likely good sites. Good luck!

I was enjoying the vids untill the closed path section. The path was closed for a land slip and for future land slides which happen with no warning taking walker and dog with them. A good call no way, as the rescue services would be putting there own life's in danger to rescue you or get your remains back to your love ones . Good call no way. I have been hiking since I was 14 I am now 65 and still hiking . I plan to do the swcp again next year in a safe manner to myself and others. Just a little more care needed.

I think you're probably right. We had a very sub-standard walk through the high street and up to the retail park to do some chores and restock on supplies. It put us on a downer after much excellent wild/quirky places before it. I'm sure there must be a better experience on other routes

The city centre is a dive. The barbican amd Hoe front can be lovely and there are loads of great places to eat when you dig past the town centre. I don't live there anymore but I love fishing there and there are some real hidden gems to the coastline around Plymouth up the Tamar and around Devils Point etc.

Most cities are built up over hundreds of years. After the Luftwaffe flattened Plymouth it was rebuilt in a post war era of forward looking hope. 2 world wars meant that, at the time, the past, which most places celebrate, was something to leave behind. The future was concrete. Unfortunately, that future didn't have much future and the world has now moved on leaving this city behind. Another rebuild is underway. It has much to offer though; sedate lifestyle compared to other cities. low crime rate etc. It just isn't that pretty that's all. But it's not putting itself up for comparison against York or Oxford is it? Baring in mind what you were seeing on the rest of your trip you were bound to come across an urban area at some point. I've lived here since '79 and believe me it's better than Gateshead.

It's the Exped Mira III UL. Great tent overall to fit 2 adults plus dog(s) plus backpacks. Only downside we found was that the rain fly is cut a little too close to the inner and if you don't set it up perfeectly, you run the risk of a bit of water getting in
