I lived in southern illinois my entire life and there are caves in Harrisburg that come out over in Kentucky. It's not a public cave but we've been going there our entire life. In 03 I believe our buddies got lost because they went without us and didn't know the cave system like we did and we had to call in a rescue crew and the local news came and everything to interview them after they came out.

That old dirt road at the trailhead is actually a county road and there is some private land back in the sand cave area.

Looks like there needs to be a cleanup drive. That's just infuriating. Such a magnificent cave to be messed up by jerks! Cute little salamander 😁

Yeah it is sad that they graffiti such a unique place. People always have to make sure they tear up stuff. Sad.

You know what dislike more than Karen’s which I don’t like either. But hikers that don’t stay on designated trails it creates all these alternatives routes that cause damage to endangered plant species, it causes trail confusion and extra washouts. Seems In the Shawnee the education is pretty bad. People need to learn the trail is to keep the damage to a minimum. I also can’t stand littering I picked up a backpack full of stuff the other day at Jackson falls ribbons everywhere. Water bottles. We need to educate people from southern Illinois much better. And close off side trails add blazes. Better defined rules and more forest rangers to enforce the correct behaviors is badly needed. I also wish southern Illinois would invest more money into the river to river trails maintenance and cut back on horse trails. These horse trails are so destructive that even if the clubs wanted to they can’t fix the amount of damage the horses create.

I hike off trail but I don't make new trails in the process. I tread lightly. I also try to pick up any trash I find along the way and hike specifically for the purpose of picking up trash, too!

I understand and agree with the rocks, but they just need moved as opposed to what I picked up at Ferne Clyffe lake. You know this trash I carried out is a preview of what their yard looks like.
