Southern 4501 is by far a Tennessean railfan’s favorite. 4501 is a 2-8-2 Mikado built by Baldwin in 1911. 4501 would serve the southern railway hauling freights until being retired early in 1948. After that, a short line railroad called the Kentucky and Tennessee railway (now known as the big south fork scenic railway) purchased 4501 as their number 12. 4501 would haul heavy coal drags in the mountains until being retired again in 1963. Paul merriman bought 4501 and soon after 4501 would be sent back to the southern. After a LONG time of operation in the southern’s steam program, 4501 still runs to this day.

From an engineering stand point, the steam locomotive is quite interesting. Interesting in the way that it makes more power as it goes faster. The faster it goes, the more exhaust, the more the draft, the more power! Also, unlike any other mode of transportation, it has most of its moving parts on the outside. In addition, the shape and structure of the boiler is a thermal expansion nightmare but some how, it works. Very, very interesting!

the firebox actually floats suspended by carrier bolts that allow for rapid heat expansion and contraction, the top speed is only limited by the maximum rated expansion due to heat of the firebox and the steam storage and regenerative ability at this maximum temperature with regards to weight and track conditions ofc.

This whistle is far shriller than that. It is a Princeton 3 Chime screamer versus Sierra 3’s Lima 5 Chime. Believe me from the Locomotive it is very loud, and compared to others at TVRM I don’t think it is that bad....

What a beautiful locomotive! This is the best train video I've seen, from the standpoint of audiovisual quality! My grandad was a railroad engineer for the McCormick Logging Company in the 1930's. He ran the "Old 100," the Baldwin 2-8-2 Mikado #59284 which is featured on the cover of "The Locomotive Portraits." My mom took many fun rides on the Old 100 when she was a child growing up in the logging camps. She was very moved at seeing this video. :)

I am not a transport engineer, but this locomotive was built to be very advanced in 1911. In modern times, it could be modified to have a quick start with a little water boiler (and liquid combustible) and a steam condenser, it might be very attractive once again. However, nice video.
@DynamoProductions-trains

Thank you. The issue with modernizing steam engines in that way is that it doesn't negate the issue that ultimately did the steam engine in in its war against diesel power: Maintenance. While it would reduce the level of high (and costly) maintenance required, it wouldn't be enough to be an economical choice when diesel locomotives are on the market. Also, it should be noted that bringing such a large engine to pressure or heat quickly, in anything less than 6 hours, can cause strain on the metal and lead to a disastrous outcome.

She should be running again next spring when the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum starts their 2018 steam season, along with Southern Railway 630, TVRM’s other running steam loco. www.tvrail.com

The only thing I do not like is the automatic Stoker! That was put in when she was rebuilt why did they put that on? When she was built she was built as a hand fired engine!

The 4501 got the Stoker from CN 5288 during its 2014 rebuild, when they were expecting to run on the mainline more often. With the engine being as big as it is, it’s a major improvement to the operation.
