If England had mirrored the Spanish formation, remembered to bring a fit left back, picked Gordon, realised Rice isn't a number six, not picked two players to play as number tens, blooded in an alternative to the non existent Harry Kane and actually kept at playing the 4-3-3 formation, then I believe there would be a greater cohesion amongst this team and it would've at least worth watching. More often than not, this tournament has been a painful watch for England fans and that is down to Gareth Southgate and easy draws not withstanding, he should have gone after the last World Cup.

Robbie correction: England got to the semi-final in 1990 with Sir Bobby Robson. Italia '90. Against West Germany, went to penalties. Pearce and Waddle missed. Some people are celebrating, yet they should hold their horses and be careful what they wish for. Southgate has raised standards and expectations. Under Southgate England has gone deep into tournaments. There is now an expectation to win and het to finals. If the next man doesn't qualify or get out of the group-stage, people will be crying out for Southgate in a few years time! There will have to be pragmatism at times, not all teams can merely be turned over. In terms of the new manager: If English, has to be: Eddie Howe or Carsley. If non-English: Klopp (though doubtful he would ever take, as he wants to relax, so no idea why his name is being constantly thrown into the mix). No way Lampard, Rooney or Gerrard. They have poor man-management and inter-personal skills. No way: the Argentian Pochettino.

And I know someone will go be careful for what you wish for, which I understand and yet we need that someone too take us over the line. Need someone who's tactically flexible who is somewhat aggressive and play good football consistently. The job has been to get a trophy since 1966 so effectively they need a manager that can win a trophy with a style of football that doesn't stink out the stadium. And this is the impossible dream. Is English national football attractive....hell no. I think Southgate has been unfortunate. If we had the same squad that lost to Italy we would have won this tournament. We had players injured and completely fatigued, we also had players who it was their first major tournament. Not being able to call apon players because they were injured cost him this tournament also the fact the media put so much pressure on our players, makes it even harder. Now we will have to accept that its going to take the next manager some time to get the team he/she to where they want them to be. As soon as I saw the game against Iceland before the euros, I didn't think we would get out the group because how fatigued our players looked. The fact is he did extremely well to get them to the final.

If Arsenal coming second in back to back seasons to a far better team and manager is bottling the league, then how can we call Southgate anything other than a bottler? Semi finals isn’t winning. Nor is losing a final. The same way coming second isn’t. And for everyone that likes to say “he bought a new feelings around the England camp” blah blah blah. No. This is just now the era of players that have grown up with social media and 0 real rivalries left in the prem. Mount, Rice, Philips, Saka, Foden and Rashford were all reason close mates and at the times they played together all played for rival club teams. That didn’t happen back in the day because they didn’t interact. Nowadays they do. Southgate didn’t do that, it’s just a generational thing. United and Liverpool don’t hate eachother like they use to. When Spurs were semi good, there were no Arsenal players in the England squad. City and Liverpool isn’t a real rivalry and Chelsea players seem to be best mates with London rivals when they play for country. He did better than I expected him to in getting to the 2 finals, so I’ll give him his flowers for getting to them. But in both of them we lost because of his tactics and starting 11 selection. Which is literally what a manager is bought in to take control of.
