@@bobthetitanic That's not what public means in that context. Public refers to the Government in that context. Police, like all public/civil servants, are those who are employed in the public sector, specifically the Government as the public sector includes many things. You *can* make the argument that by extension they serve the public, because the police serve the government, who are either appointed by, or are individuals voted into their positions by civilians. But that's very misleading to say, because that's a much more complicated story than what you're saying. The purpose of police, and arguably the only purpose, is to enforce the laws and statutes enacted by the Government. Anything else is optional.

My Dad dealt with this constantly. He was a Federal Agent and when he would arrest someone or write tickets, they would say, "I pay your salary!" His response was either, "I guess you're the one I need to talk to about a raise" or "I've been meaning to thank you for that." He would always treat people with respect as long as they treated him with respect. He was killed in a helicopter crash while on the drug task force when I was 9. His helicopter was missing for 3 days and hundreds and hundreds of people volunteered to search. Dozens were people he arrested. Many people also came to his funeral (along with thousands of others) that he had arrested. It is surreal to be in town and someone tell you that your Dad was such a great guy and ask how they know him and them say he arrested them. He also had quite a few death threats (resolved quickly). We were in the same coffee place and this woman was having issues with the fact a "police officer wasn't in his car catching criminals because his coffee was more important." It took everything for me and him to not start laughing. Then she says "I pay your salary." Me and my cop friend look at each other before looking back at her and saying "Then you should give us a raise for keeping the community clean and safe."

The "I pay your salary" works for pretty much everyone. When I buy a meal at a restaurant I help a little bit with the waiter, chef's, and manager's salary. When I pay taxes I pay a little bit to keep police and firefighter's doing their job by paying their salary. Any time you buy anything you're paying more than what the item/service in itself is worth, so some of the excess money can goes towards paying someone's salary and keep people in any profession employed. Money is circulated. The tax money the police officer is getting he's putting back into the circulation when he buys something - like in the diner when he bought ice cream. Government salaries are not a big black hole of money being removed from the circulation. It's being put back in the private sector to buy groceries, home goods etc. Some people forget that. It's a wheel and we all help turning it.

Such a moronic statement. "I pay your salary" Actually no, you don't. You don't sign his paycheck. Nor do you give him a W2 every year. What you do is pay taxes to the federal, state, and city governments. When all that money is collected, the electees or the appointees, figure out where its needed and where it needs to go. sometimes police and fire, usually roads, public works, schools, etc. Ok, done. Captain obvious signing off.

Not really. If you work in the private sector, your salary is paid by you, as you are the one producing the wealth you earn. Whoever said that cops were not required to take calls, here’s something that I’m betting most people don’t know. Did you know that cops are not even under any legal obligation to protect you at all? Before you say that “cops are sworn to protect and serve” or some stupid P.R. bullcrap like that, put this in your pipe and smoke it: the United States Supreme Court has actually ruled that the police do not have a legal duty to protect the citizens of the jurisdictions in which they work. Don’t believe me? Look up the 2005 U.S. Supreme Court case of Castle Rock v. Gonzales, 545 U.S. 748, in which the High Court ruled 7-2 that a town and its police department could not be sued under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 for failing to enforce a restraining order, which had led to the murder of a woman's three children by her estranged husband, which is the same thing as saying that they are under no legal duty, even in the face of a court-issued restraining order, to protect the citizens. Moral of the story: police or no police, you’re on your own. The responsibility to protect yourself and your family rests with you and with you ALONE.
