In the light of recent events, I've noticed this video is getting a sudden spike in views. For clarification, this video has nothing to do with the recent tragedy that has occurred in Southport. My sincerest condolences go out to anyone who has been affected. ❤

Happy anniversary! One of these days I'm going to bump into you somewhere on the Merseyrail network. If you ever find yourself pointlessly in Glasgow you'll find an abundance of pointless opportunities between Glasgow Central (High Level) and (Low Level), and Glasgow Queen Street (High Level) and (Low Level) plus several other stations in the city centre where walking is most likely quicker than catching a train.

Hi Nick....congratulations on your 1 year KZitem milestone. I enjoy your pointless journeys series and how you present your videos. With regards to Meols Cop pronunciation, like most things there is no real wrong way to pronounce it. However, I grew up in Southport and lived near to Meols cop at one point. I remember it was always pronounced 'Meels' cop. I actually also lived on the Wirral and Meols on the Wirral was always pronounced 'Mells'. Meols cop in Southport gets its name from the old North Meols, which was actually a separate place from Southport. At that time Southport was known as South Hawes. Hawes is the old name for Sand dunes. I hope this information was helpful. Oh! Did you know, people from Southport are called 'Sandgrounders'. Look forward to seeing some more of you creations, Nick. All the best, Mark.
@TheTriumfAnt

As a former Sandgrounder, I always pronounced it "Meels" as well. I didn't know the info about Hawes, so thanks for that.

Just to be different: my family are from Wigan going back a few generations and they always pronounced it Moles - like the animals. As Mark said above, I guess there's really no right and wrong and does it really matter anyway?

I once did Whitby to Scarborough. Went to ticket office to buy ticket and was told that the line was closed down - had to explain that I wanted to go via York and Middlesbrough, got an odd look when the ticket was over £30 and trip took around 4 hours when I could have got the bus in 1 hour for £8. I got the bus back again from Whitby.

At least Northern's 769s are still in service, unlike GWRs and TfWs 769s which are now at the Long Marston retirement home for bewildered rolling stock. I agree about the 3+2 seating. They reduce standing room and passenger flow due to the narrow aisle so increasing station dwell times at busy stations like Piccadilly. A good example was the difference between the SWT/R 455s and Southern's. Southern's (now scrapped) 455s had 3+2 seats and were cramped with poor passenger flow, plus the centre seat was often left vacant. The SWT/R units are 2+2 plus with less seats and more standing room at the vestibule area to aid flow. The station dwell times are impressive. The suburban lines out of Waterloo (via Wimbledon) can manage a train frequency of 3 minutes on the UKs busiest network.

I used to make "pointless" journeys around Ormskirk, Burscough Junction & Burscough Bridge when working for BR in the 1960's! Didn't seem pointless at the time but looking back - what was the point of it all!
@georgemaund4964
9 ай бұрын
Burscough Junction hasn't been a junction since the 1960s. One obvious development would be to extend the third rail north to BJc and onto a reinstated curve to Burscough Bridge, opening new journey opportunities: is the land/former track bed still available?Another would be third rail all the way to Preston using the south facing bays for recharge/reversal, or with battery being in vogue, use the new 777s on battery to Preston.

Just do it earlier in the day, cus afternoon/evening services from Bidston are very limited (they even stopped them for a big cus of a lack of trains for TfW 😭) As a former resident of Neston... It was awful. And no the buses will not save you, they run infrequently during the day, not in the afternoons. So if you do this, for the love of all that is holy, do so in the mornings not the evenings

Plenty of pointless journeys in Birmingham area. Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Moor Street are only about 1/4 mile apart but you can get between them via Smethwick Galton Bridge or via Droitwich or via Leamington Spa. And for the first two you can throw in a trip on the parallel West Midland Metro.
