I work for prairie Material. Everyone in Chicago knows about John. So many stories. He'd walk around the yard and anyone cleaning his truck without being told to would get a hand shake, a thank you, and a crisp $100 bill. That's how you inspire people and gain loyalty.

I grew up in wwestern suburbs (West Chicago) and knew all of these place names, but knew very little of their history. Absolutely fascinating doc showing the richness of the history of this area, which was settled a few decades before the area I grew up in.

I graduated from Joliet Twp H.S. way back in 1963. Went to JJC after that, maybe I ran into Lionel Richie, IDK. Any your section on Will Co/Joliet really peaked my interest. A school friend of mine his dad worked at Stateville & my dad worked at the Arsenal. I never did this as a kid but "daredevils" would ride the bridges when they opened up for barges. I really enjoyed your presentation. Thanks, Paul, Greeley, Colorado.

Paying a toll attendant with penny’s is something my uncle used to do to get out of paying tolls. Because usually the attendant would get so pissed they’d refuse to count it and would just wave him through.

Let’s hear it for the Bluesmen and women of Chicago! What a wealth of great music/musicians emanated from Chicago which has it’s own distinct style melding Delta Blues and NY Blues. I’d love to visit the cemetery where so many of my idols now rest. Thank you for this series. Not a native of Chicago but a huge fan after visiting for a summer as a kid. Chicago has great people who are friendly and helpful to visitors. I think I left my heart there when I had to go back to NY-cried all the way home on the plane!

I have to ponder about the new lenox phone system and non regional companies Id think just writing off the area. These days we are seeing more municipality ISP's for internet popping up (like in tennessee) because corporate/regional ISP's have significantly dropped the ball in rural areas. At least the municipal ISP in TN has proven they can do it better and for cheaper I think. These are different times but similar kinda issue (possibly), the fcc lied its ass off about coverage in America during the ajit pai era just a couple of years ago.... The coverage sucks in most of America, those of us in more populated areas have great access (still usually overcharging) but most of rural America has awful coverage... I digress its turned into a tangent but Id like to learn more about weird stuff like the new lenox phones back in the day.

The only reason Chicago exists is because of the Lyons Illinois Portage. The US Government built Fort Dearborn at the mouth of the Chicago River at Lake Michigan to protect the portage from British incursions. The Treaty of Paris was held up for months because of the portage. Britain wanted it to be declared international open territory, the US said no. Finally the British accepted unrestricted travel up the Mississippi to its head waters in exchange for giving up claim to the portage.

Wow! So the canal segment (and earlier in this video) refuses to mention Jean Baptiste DuSable?! As a "native" Chicagoan (born and raised) - again, Wow! Racist and selective much?!
