The printed board of this HDD was manufactured in my native town Biala in Bulgaria. My father used to work there 40 year ago. I’ve heard many times stories about how low quality these were. Bulgaria at that time was considered as the Eastern block Silicon Valley. Most of the production was stolen and copied by industrial espionage. The factory was modern at its times. I used to play PC games on Bulgarian copy of Apple II called Pravetz 82.... those were the days. Now the building is abandoned, and barely few people know what it was. More than 400 people used to work in there.
@amihartz
3 жыл бұрын
Sure, many Soviet factories at the time could not produce things as well as the west, but they had literally no manufacturing capacity only a few decades prior, and today they have deindustrialized and hardly manufacture things at all anymore. People seem to expect a developing country to somehow be capable of out-competing wealthy western countries in very little time, it is unrealistic, you have to compare it to what it had before. At least the Soviets _actually manufactured stuff._ If they were still around, they could be like China in level of manufacturing ability. But instead eastern Europe has deindustrialized and any tech you buy over there is just imported from other countries, either western countries or often China. You can accuse Soviet tech of being lower quality than the west's but at least they produced tech.

I had the Seagate ST-225 (two, actually) in my AT&T 8086 based PC I built when I was 8 years old. Had a vintage sound blaster and 8-bit VGA card in it, too. Think the most sophisticated thing I could do on it was play Lemmings. Didn't know the Soviets actually made direct clones of western/asian PC technology, but that's of no surprise at this point.

Before eastern Europe adopted neoliberalism, they actually had their own manufacturing and could produce their own stuff. In fact, a lot of it was not just "clones" but in many fields they were at the forefront of technological innovation. According to Keith Diefendorff, the Soviets had superscalar CPUs that were 15 years ahead of the west. Although the Soviets also lacked the same supply chains as the west, making it difficult to mass produce them in the same quantities, so people falsely assume Soviet computer technology was far behind, when in reality it was more of a supply chain problem than a technological problem. It doesn't really matter these days though as they've adopted neoliberalism and mostly deindustrialized and most tech you buy in Russia is just foreign imported.

Back when eastern Europe actually were at the forefront of science and innovation at manufactured their own tech rather than just importing it all or just not having any. According to Keith Diefendorff, the Soviets had CPUs that were 15 years ahead of the west. Although due to being sanctioned from the world market and developing things domestically, they were not able to mass produce computers as well as the west, but the actual technology was pretty advanced, and despite being a developing country, they were even manufacturing their own computers and computer hardware domestically. I was surprised when doing my computer science degree at uni how much stuff you're taught that was invented by the Soviets, such as AVL trees. They were also at the forefront of things like rocket and nuclear science. These days Russia has largely de-industrialized and just reuses old Soviet tech and most tech you can buy in Russia is just foreign manufactured and imported. Soviets used to be the tech powerhouse of the east, and gave it all up to pursue neoliberalism, and China has taken their place. Eastern Europe could've been the China of today but chose liberalism instead.
