Hi I just wanted to chime in. I absolutely agree with everything you said. It's a huge update honestly and the fact that they are still adding all these updates for free makes buying an sp404mk2 a no brainer for someone who wants a physical device to make electronic music with. Also, the looper is such a dope feature. I'm so glad they added the looper because it's my absolute favorite way to make music. Add a 4 bar drum loop, add a bass line, add some chords/samples, beat made. No more resample, stop, resample, stop. It makes the process that much more seamless which helps tremendously when you just want to have fun. What I think people also need to realize is that these kinds of updates lower the barrier to entry for music making. Now instead of saying, "I want to buy a piano or guitar," you say, "I want to buy an sp404mk2," and it's like owning a sampler, a looper, a synth, and a DAW in a box all in one purchase. I think in the not so distant future it won't be strange to hear people say that they "play the sp404mk2" just like one might "play the guitar." Peace and love! Great opinions.

That is very insightful. I was feeling the same way with turntables a few years ago thinking that would take over as the new instruments. I think you may be right. I can certainly see it. It's the beauty and mystery of the MKII. You think you know what it can do till they push out another update.

Some of my thoughts in response to yours: Hopefully Roland will redesign the looper feature: 1) integrate it with the default sample workflow and not as a separate feature with all these extra shortcuts. So select a destination pad, hit sample (or resample) and choose ‘loop after recording’. This could also be made an option in main settings, so default vs looped. 2) make overdubbing optional in settings, too. This could double the recording buffer, which now is used for undo/redo and replay of the initial loop for re-recording / overdubbing. On the synth part, it’s a nice addition. Simple sound generation, no more no less. I don’t think they’ll expand on it any further, because the SP isn’t a (poly) synth. They have more capable machines in store. STEMS would be nice. Maybe by using the resources of Koala, which already offers STEMS separation on iPad. What I hope they’ll do is expand the Koala integration towards a companion app. It should be made possible to exchange samples both ways without the need for recording. Imagine how cool it would be to use the Koala app as some sort of a sample manager like Roland’s desktop app. Load in Koala, make banks, adjust settings and create patterns… sync all at once to the SP. It would all fit inside one, ‘offline’ project.

I think the expansion of the Koala app would pay off dividends. Additionally, I agree that the looper feature should be part of the workflow instead of a separate mode. I really appreciate the input. Thanks.

They also need an auto correct on the looper. By auto correct I mean if your loop is slightly off your loop will be corrected. I don't know if Pioneer uses this but I've seldom gotten a bad loop. My DJ loopers had this feature 20 years ago. Auto correct doesn't mean you can't make a bad loop but you have to work at it
@maikvanrossum

@@tylon2999 would be basically the same as the auto-snap to zero-crossing point for adjusting the start and endpoints, except that the algorithm should search for a logical peak around the points that a user started and stopped the looper. One problem here… the looper should do a bit more ‘guessing’, especially at the beginning of the loop. Pioneer and other DJ gear work with pre-analysis of the song, including BPM. So these devices have a lot more information to work with for realtime performance.

One thing I'm sure of. The loading sample from SD card breaking resampling is real (confirmed by Roland) and will be addressed in an intermittent update. Sampling and resampling using tempo/beats is a revelation. Now, I can integrate my Roland, my external fx rig (CE2 blackface, Zoom CDR 70, Boss GX700, and Alesis Studioquad) and my Zenbeats app and my Polyend Tracker. Just set the tempo. Set the beats. Press record. Start the sequencer (Zenbeats or PT). Done. The Koala-app is programmed by Marek Bareza, a genius individual (who responds to e-mail), not a company, no matter what Ave says. The main reason for the integration is its ability to create stems way before Akai could. And I don't think the SP has enough power under the hood to handle stems anyway. A better app (at least for Windows and Mac OS) could be on the horizon. Since Koala is being ported to Windows now, Mr. Bareza could be involved. BTW, the merge function could be designed with stems in mind. Now, an integration between the three MC machines (MC 101, MC707, and the underrated MV-1) and one seriously underrated app (Zenbeats) would solve a lot of Roland's problems. Where the MV-1 is integrated into Zenbeats, the 101 and 707 are not (inconsistent) , and neither is the SP 404 (the current app isn't supported by the 4.04 upgrade). So if I were head software development, I would target a multiplatform app that brings together Zenbeats and 4 (or 6) products under a single hood. That app being Zenbeats. An external sample management and edit function for the SP, a display for the MV (and now both the MCs), a sequencer for all, an editor for the whole Zencore universe (Juno and Jupiter X included). Massive undertaking, but it would turn Roland in a competitor for not only Akai, Korg and Yamaha, but also for Native Instruments and Ableton.

It would make sense to integrate everyone under a single system, but the problem with that would limit what each individual branch is doing for it's customers. If there has to be a feature on the 404 that was accomplished, do we hold off on releasing it till we make sure it works with all the other products? I would say no just because the creativity between the different branches is more valuable than their collective uniformity.

i've been waiting for a looper since i got my sp-404mkii so it's a VERY welcome update i tihnk you're correct on future 1.sp-404mkii phone app - roland already do phone apps for the Ae-20 wind synth so i can defo see this happening soon for the sp-404mkii 2. docking station - doubtful .. it's not a thing they have ever done. 3. sp555Mkii or SP-808mkii - can de see this happening if they want to expand the range of SP's in 2024. 4. Roland SP-202 MKii - i can also see a mini sp in the roland compact form factor - built in battery, microphone, sd card slot and 8 pads.(pocket sized too) we have a bright future i think. re synth tool - export as sample - you now have poly options also re synth tool - use the merge/stck sample option to craft a new sound from different waves out of the synth tool.

The sp404mk2 is already taking is place as the new mv8000 which the mv-1 was hinted to become of. With the sp404 already a bwtter selling and far more loved unit an apoir approaching 20 years old and with the missing 505 tyoe looper added it had far exceeded the previous sp capabilities and standards and has adapted and slotted nicely into this generation i believe it still has room for growth and camt see Roland pushing towards more previous sp models and havw almost perfected the all in one affordable daw in a box that willl transcend morw decades to come. Cant see a dock being absolutely necessary and with newer technology wnd digital favoured users,cross compatibility and software based updates via apps ans the machine will have no need for a new unit ti be released at least for anither few years to come and thats far within the rights as the 404mk2 is a cult classic and modernised for the current and future user to do it all. It is still in my opinion slept on, more user friendly, nostalgic and hands on than any other new unit being made and continued and atill ticks most boxes in a desired beat makers checklist and with Roland's ear close ti the streets it atill has room to move and enchane

All you have to do for the tone generator is resample the note to a pad and resample with effects, while using the envelope to create the synth sound and you can use chromatic mode for chords. I've been resampling multiple waveforms, detuning, merging, effect , etc. into a single pad and playing chords/melodies. So instead of adding effects while you're in tone gen. just choose the waveform/s and do the effects in chromatic mode. Problem solved 😁 I'm hyped about the stem bouncing and a lot of the features. I'm really hoping Roland makes a standalone device that rivals the MPC that works on a clip/scene sort of way. As much as I love the SP, it's just not my ideal standalone. I'm not super in love with the MPC workflow, so I'm just hoping for some innovation in the standalone world. Otherwise I'm saving for the overpriced Push 3 haha.

Great video you touched on a few interesting points regarding the SP404 MK2. One push back I have to throw out there is the fact that Roland wants to compete with the Akai drum machines/DAW. I think these two devices are very different and a consumer wouldn’t choose between the two! The SP is a hybrid machine the MacGyver of devices with a cult like following. The Akai machine are essentially just modern day versions of the classic machines geared for software and paired with a computer. I think it would be a mistake for Roland to create a new device unless it had essentially the same footprint and portability of the MK2. It’s the perfect size and anything bigger wouldn’t make sense. Now I wouldn’t mind seeing a MK3 with a slightly bigger screen and maybe a 16 track Daw which would make sense since there’s sixteen pads! If they need software space just remove the entire DJ section which is pointless because no one buys a SP404 to DJ with it. Lol. The Roland SP555 is a god awful ugly looking machine….i know some people don’t care about aesthetics but it does matter and the only way that machine would sell is unless they sex that thing up to a SP404MK2 level… Thanks for the video…..

@@TheChameleon2008 I agree the collaboration with Koala is fantastic but remember you have to own an iPad and you essentially lose the convenience of the SP. Yeah that setup is still portable but not practical…if you follow me. Also with Koala in the mix I don’t see Roland moving forward with any type of DAW or separate track system for the SP404 at the moment! I must say having a 8 or 16 track display on this baby would be next level…

Using my SP404 together with my MC707[or MC101], and knowing they both using the same internal chip (BMC) I wonder/wish Roland would combine the Sounds/Midi Sequencing/BossRoland EFX/Clips/Audio Routing workflow of the MC707 together with the sampling/audio looping/SP404 efx/pad quality/DJ Mode and storage of the SP404. Enlarge the screen(double of the MC707], increase polyphony and better integrate with DAW(like the new 4.04 stems) they are very close to the MPC but better for live performance use also I hardly end up using the MPC because of the Touchscreen/ poorly being slaved to(DIN) MIDI clock/long project loading times (compared to the SP)
