This was to be a Battlestar Galactica game for Intellivision, but they failed to get the license. One of my first games for the system, we had a blast.

That's some awesome trivia. Thank you for it! This game seems like it lost it's focus and/or development time at some point. I find it kind of cheap that you only fight a couple of waves before the "end" of the game. I totally missed the Atari Age (born in 1984), but I love playing Atari games and the rest of the old retro systems...in some ways they're more gratifying and entertaining than the newer stuff we have today. Nonetheless, your comment explains some aspects of this curiosity. Thanks for your post!

I liked a bunch of the Mattel Atari games, but I always hated their cartridge design for the simple fact that it was impossible to stack them, or even even neatly organize them in a box. The small body and large front end guaranteed that no matter how you stored them, they were always going to end up a mess.

The M Network games are very underrated in my opinion. They did a great job with no flicker in the graphics. The Intellivistion version is my favorite game for that system, and this one isn't too bad. I do like it much more than Star Raiders.

M network did a decent job on their ports and atarisoft did too.... they seem sincerely attempting to deliver....coleco on the other hand... some were ok, but I am still convinced that they purposely sabotaged some of their intellvision and 2600 ports.

@@datacipher I'm inclined to agree. In the "Atari Vault" for Steam on PC, with the added 50 games DLC, they have some, if not all, of the M Network games included. I haven't perused them all yet, but I've played a few, and I'm kind of under the impression that corners were cut during the development of some of these games. Which is pretty disappointing. If I had purchased this game when it came out, presumably for close to $50, I would have been pretty upset...But, hey, I felt the same way with some of the games I played on NES and Genesis and SNES as well...but I sympathize with your comment here.

The term "underrated" is overused in KZitem comments. The M-Network games were OK; I bought two new. But they should have come out in 1981, before there was so much 3rd-party competition as well as the RealSports line. The writing was on the wall after Atari got Space Invaders and console sales soared 4x, making Intellivision nearly D.O.A. Also, the "Super Challenge" in Super Challenge Baseball (and Armor Ambush) was finding an opponent willing to learn the controls to get good at it. Many didn't have a 1-player version, which was an oversight, too. Funnily enough I heard a review recently saying they should have had a 2-player version for one game (I forget which).

@@datacipherI think they were just being cheap, like both Atari and Coleco used a 4K ROM for their best-selling Atari games, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, respectively, (to save money from an 8K) and they sold 8 and 4 million respectively (only 2 million ColecoVision consoles were sold). The idea that this would encourage someone to buy an Atari computer or a ColecoVision is nonsense, even if the people at the companies believed it. I think someone said Intellivision renamed some of their games for Atari in case they were negatively reviewed because they didn't want people thinking Intellivision games were bad, too.

Excellent review! I picked this one up loose as well and had no idea what I was doing. I sort of figured it out enough to play it and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Thanks for the tips!

Of the 4 Star Raiders-like games, Starmaster is currently 49th, Star Raiders is 75th, Star Voyager is 89th, and Space Attack is 149th/264.

That sounds about right to me. Star Voyager was the simplest of them (no tactical screen, etc.), but, even as one of the initial releases from Imagic, it had that Imagic graphical and gameplay magic--not to mention the outstanding packaging. Sadly, Phazor Patrol, arguably the best of them on the VCS, wasn't ranked by NSG with the rest of the Atari games. He wrongheadedly only ranked Supercharger games among each other.

@@RetroDawn Well, when Atari bought other companies' games to release in the late '80s (without fixes or improvements), they also could have re-released Starpath Supercharger games and converted them to cartridges once the price of chips went down, so they wouldn't have to be loaded from CD or tape. But they didn't. I can see why he only ranked them with themselves: it's like a different system. Should Sega 32x games be compared to regular ones?

Love your channel. Okay, so I was playing this game today via Steam's "Atari Vault" (comes with the extra 50 games DLC). I got wrecked on my first try, so I read the manual. Then when I knew what the heck I was doing, I decimated the aliens. Both waves. Then, nothing happened. I thought maybe it was glitched or I was missing something, so I checked out your video. Just to clarify; after the two initial waves, you "win" the game, correct?? How unfortunate. In my opinion, they should have had endless waves and a score, as opposed to just winning or losing in a binary sense. This was a really fun game. But I "beat" it on my second try. Lame. Thank you so much for your awesome videos. Much Love.

As an adult I got it on the cheap, but found it not very interesting. I didn't like Star Raiders very much, and might have been 1 of 2 games to return, if I thought I could as a kid.
