Well done ESA. We need other space agencies to actively reduce space junk also. By taking a large object out of orbit, you are potentially removing many, many smaller objects in the case of another object striking that large object. If only a vacuum cleaner would work in a vacuum.

What is the risk of kessler syndrome in GSO, compared to LEO? Edit And what clean-up missions are currently planned/being designed for GSO?
@Real_Mr_Bruh
3 жыл бұрын
I think the particle density in LEO is much higher. Therefore, the risk of collisions between them is greater. Also, to maintain their height, the particles must travel with a higher speed which results in a stronger impact. Let's see what ESA answers 🤔
@Pharisaeus
3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much a non-issue. Much less stuff there, much more space, much lower velocities and most GSO/GEO satellites are retired by moving into graveyard orbit anyway. LEO is much more cramped and most derelict objects are just left there.

How high is possibility that space debris will cause a catastrophic event like the destruction of a manned craft as seen in the movie "Gravity"?
@ryojiro6553
3 жыл бұрын
the big question is How will they lower the growing number of space debris instead of adding more garbage polluting our earth's orbit is to find a way to clean them. Perhaps an orbital cleaner/space debris sweeper, a controlled satellite drone that can directly collect the debris like a vaccum cleaner. manually collecting them with robots and put them into a trash-can.

Can't we set the trajectory of a satellite,for example, that is reaching the end of its life towards the sun and let it, even with a very small velocity, travel towards it and vaporize in the end?

@@perlasandoval7883 Thank you for your answer. May I ask why it is reserved only for high satellites? Is it because it is easier to give them a trajectory towards the sun when they are in a higher altitude rather than in lower altitudes where there is a ton of other satellites so maneuvering would be more challenging?

if there is really all that space junk up there then how isn't the ISS not ripped to shreds? how are they avoiding being hit. and why shouldn't NASA and all other space programs be fined for leaving their trash up there. I got fined $300 for dropping a cig. butt out my window in the rain. yeah I shouldn't have done it and I don't need a lecture on it but I don't smoke anymore so anyways if that much space junk in floating around up there and going that fast how in the hell is the ISS not ripped apart and satellites should be being hit all the time.

so how in the world does the space station even avoid something as small as a chip of paint going 22,000 mph? with how this video describes it and shows computer generated examples how in the world does something as big as the space station avoid being hit. and why is it ok for space programs to leave their trash when you can get fined on earth for a napkin tossed on the ground. and thats friggin bio-degradable too. I would say this is if not more then but just as equal to littering down here. they should figure out how to collect all their debris before being allowed to launch anything else.
