I love how Dark Rides are often essentially just very simple rollercoasters but with the lights off. The atmosphere, sounds and lighting literally sell the entire thing, to the extent that, when I see a mediocre outdoor rollercoaster, I generally think 'You should've just built it inside and turned the lights off and it would've been 10 times better'.

We were stuck there for about 10-15 minutes and when the lights came on it was amazing. We got to see so many carts on the Alpha side go past and we just kept waving at them. It was hilarious. We also loved waving at the People Mover whenever they’d pass. I’d like to think we created a core memory for so many people that day. 😂

In my opinion, Space Mountain is meant to be experienced with all of its effects, in near-total darkness. The main thing Space Mountain banks on is the unknown. Unless you’ve memorized every part of the track, you’ll never know what’s coming up ahead and that is what gives Space Mountain some, if not most of its intensity.

Here's a few tidbits of info about Space Mountain...Fyi, I'm a retired, in 2016, Engineer with Lockheed Martin here in Orlando but I just finished a two year stint (I resigned in February) in Security at WDW and I worked in Custodial at Magic Kingdom back in '74 - '75 my Sr. year in H.S. The current speed of Space Mountain is 28 MPH (Fyi, 7 Dwarfs Mine Train is 32 MPH), but back in '74/'75 when the ride hadn't yet opened the cast members were allowed free test rides during their lunch breaks...at that time the Engineers had the speed at 50 MPH...I heard at the time the engineers also did test runs at 55 and 60 mph. When the ride opened in '75 it was set at 42 mph and it was completely blacked out inside so the girders could not be seen at all. After a couple "incidents" the speed was lowered several times (down to 35 mph, then 32 mph and finally to today's 28 mph) and the lights were turned up several times so the girders can easily be seen (so as to hopefully keep people from trying to stand up). Needless to say a blacked out SM at 50 MPH was a hair raising ride that you felt lucky to have survived...the G forces I remember were pretty damn forceful.
