What's most interesting about Space Slalom is the fact that it's a console port of the Orca arcade game simply titled Slalom, a game on which there's literally NO info to be found anywhere beyond the fact that it exists. No pictures, no video, definitely no rom dump, no info on how close to this port it played, not even a DESCRIPTION that makes it clear whether the original Slalom had a space theme or if that was invented for this port they renamed Space Slalom. The game is a complete mystery and was almost certainly extremely rare to find in arcades back then.

Space Slalom seems like a proof of concept demo from the first stage of developing an actual game. I guess it was a necessary stepping stone on the way to the vertical space shooters, at a time when "I can move a thing on the TV!" was still enough of a novelty to sell a game. That said, the scrolling is smooth and graphics are nice for the platform. The garish acid trip color palate of the hardware really does no favors to any sort of realistic stuff. So a space setting that can use a simple black background and vague "space spheres" in weird colors was probably a good choice for working within the visual limitations of the platform. They just needed to make the other 75% of a game.

I remember when that motorcycle game was in arcades, it's one of the great "dangle a bit of new pixel art in front of them, that will get more quarters.." games. Being from Houston I know I got good enough to regularly see that skyscape. As for the Pachinko game its actually quite satisfying to watch, and I imagine it was a reasonably good itch scratcher for steel ball addicts who were either broke or suck at home back in the day as well as the casual fan who just liked plucking a bucket or two from time to time.

Coincidentally, Retro Core's Battle Of The Ports series is also covering Exerion this week. (If I may : kzitem.info/news/bejne/mYyC1Il9r310hX4.) You do well to insist on the parallax effect of the arcade original. As a child I was fascinated by the impression of depth it added to the experience. The effect takes into account the ship's position which alongside with its inertia really adds to the sense of depth of the graphics, even though - as you mentioned, it is created mostly using vertical (and lateral) scrolling + more or less classic 2D waves of enemies. Recreation of the effect on home hardware would have necessitated hardware capable of showing at least two planes of graphics scrolling independently (each representing one "row" of the advancing landscape) and that would not arrive before the 16 bit era so there was little hope the SG-1000 would be up to the task. As you say, had they simply used a simpler landscape rendering method it would probably have worked much better. The first machine able to produce an arcade perfect port would have been capable of an arcade perfect port (vertical screen orientation aside) would have been the Amiga with its dual playfield capabilities. Alas, that computer was still years in the future at that stage and by the time it got released everyone had forgotten about Exerion. Except me, I guess, who waited and waited, in vain... 😢. This said, it would probably have been ported by US Gold and consequently would have sucked to high hell anyway so no big regrets in the end. Thanks for the video Jeremy!

I enjoy Exerion. But only the arcade version. None of the ports really capture the strategies the original version makes use of and it really comes down to being a vertically orientated game.
@Pikachu132
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, none of Exerion's contemporary consoles were really capable of handling its effects all that well. The Famicom port is a bit better than the SG-1000 one, but not by a whole lot. But since that effect is such a big part of the game's identity, they couldn't very well leave it out either.

While I've been aware of the SG1000's existence for a number of years I have really enjoyed this in-depth look into the games released for it! At times I think you can see some trends with whomever at Sega was responsible for the home hardware & software occasionally made some questionable choices that usually didn't pan out. Those types of actions may not have seriously hurt Sega in those times, or even during most of the Mega Drive/Genesis days, but they sure did hurt the company during mid 90's and beyond!

Zippy Race is legitimately good and rivals the best games on Master System. It sucks the SG-1000 version is so expensive. It's quality stuff. Thankfully there's a Famicom version that is also quite good that is far more affordable. 13:40 "The overall effect of this game is like having someone scream at your eyeballs" I don't think anyone has ever described Exeron so well. Orca had a long, looong way to go before it hit the heights of Toaplan. Did you ever play Springer? It's an arcade platformer, similar to Donkey Kong or Roc 'n Rope, but with jumps that demand exact precision and a musical score that's like a curb stomping for your ears. Tiger Electronics ported the game to the 2600, where it was even more sadistic.

The Pachinko bug thing never made much sense to me, seems to just have been a rumor that popped up at some point and never went away. Nobody's ever been able to FIND any such bug in the game. I really don't think there's anything more to the recall than Sega deciding that a pachinko game with only one machine in it was a bit too simple, and once they put out a sequel with three machines shortly afterwards, they just recalled the original because they didn't want to offer a less complete game to their customers. This isn't common to do with video games, but recalling products because you're releasing an improved variant happens in a lot of other industries.

The dates in most of these videos are incorrect, because that info didn't exist on websites at the time I produced them-not even on JP sites. Toward the end of this series, someone made me aware of scans at Archive.org of Game Machine, a Japanese arcade-focused magazine from the ’80s, which had comprehensive launch date details for Famicom, Super Cassette Vision, and SG-1000. I was able to dig through and find firm launch dates for those systems through early 1986 and translate/publish them (though the Famicom dates matched to what was already present online), and now that info is widely available online. So, this video series is scrambled, but it helped unearth the more accurate details that rendered it obsolete. I reworked and rewrote the chronology-related info for the SG-1000 Works book, so the "permanent record" of the system is correct.

Though I’m almost positive this has been mentioned multiple times on each of your SG-1000 videos, (and perhaps you’ve already mentioned it in a video!) but allow me to add it once again: The Exerion palette becomes less devastating to your eyes when played on the original hardware. I couldn’t help but notice these games are likely played on a Master System or an RGB modified SG-1000. The SG-1000, of course, has a fascinating pastelle palette that looks like sun faded 1980s plastics. Unfortunately, there’s no good RGB mod to get the colors to display properly, resulting in an over saturated SG-1000 or an entirely different color palette on the Master System.
@JeremyParish

I just received the cable I need to connect my RGB-modded SG-1000 today, so these videos should be looking a lot better soon.

That’s fantastic news indeed! The colors will still be a bit more saturated than the original palette, but it should roughly be a similar color. As far as I’m aware, your footage will be among the very little (if not only) RGB footage for SG-1000 on the internet. I’m looking forward to that! Apologies for being a pedant on this issue, but for some reason, I’ve developed quite an affinity for that SG-1000 “look”.
