For the future of the company SpaceX, and the future of human space travel, that catch represents a monumental event. That was a make or break moment.
@bandarnes
5 күн бұрын
You are very incorrect. A failed attempt today would not nearly break SpaceX....
@kathrynck
4 күн бұрын
@@bandarnes It would be very bothersome. SpaceX runs things kinda tight in terms of fiscal padding. If the super heavy "took out" mecha-zilla, and some of the surrounding infrastructure... it could be difficult to recover from. Also it would affect public opinion. Which may seem meaningless, but ultimately business is in part dependent on this (as Boeing is learning). And regulators are skittish about allowing rockets heading towards land, instead of out to sea or out into a desert. It wouldn't _necessarily_ doom spaceX. But it could create a downward spiral. It was _very_ important to demonstrate that this 'catch' method can indeed work. Now that they've proven this... they are more free to have a setback in the future. The catch method saves a LOT of weight. And in space flight, weight is worth more than gold. They've demonstrated a very profitable method 'does' work. Now those who could present obstacles will weigh things against this profitability. Until today, in the back of many minds, the catch was a pipe dream. Now it's not. That matters a lot.
