Hola, Francisco.

All of the examples I have seen given for successful immersion students have been where there has been no other choice, such as the person who married into a village life where noone spoke her language or any other language, and that took years of "study". Most often if you are trying to immerse it's too difficult for you and for those around you that you are trying to learn from. For example if I go to Spain, at my intermediate level of Spanish I can communicate in a shop if there is no other common language, but it's slow and is work for both me and the shop worker. If the shop worker speaks English, they will switch to that immediately. Native TV, Radio, KZitem, books and even chlidrens versions of those are incredibly advanced in reality. I have studied 1000 hours of comprehensible input, and only now can I watch SOME youtube channels and very little TV. My target is 2000 hours, at which native media should be understandable.

I completely agree with you. I am a classic guy and first comes learning the rules. Nonetheless, man, come on. You also cheat. You're a native Spanish speaking. How difficult could it be to learn the rules of Portuguese or French for you?!! Even with my own knowledge I can surely say that learning another Romance language is very very easy, let's say comparing to learning German or Russian... But I agree with you on the principle

Yes, the grammar and lexicon between Portugese and Spainish in over 85% the same, it's just the accent that is very different.

Exactly Marilyn! The basic rules don't need to be learned they're acquired without question and used correctly without thinking.

Think . . . How did you learn Spanish before you went to school? You eavesdropped on adult conversations and understood absolutely nothing . . . until you did. That's the way to get started. Once you have acquired enough basic vocabulary to answer simple questions simply, then you're ready to go to school and accept being educated.

That's partly true, but most parents also talk to the baby/toddler directly, in very simple language, accompanied by gestures, showing objects, or pointing to pictures in children's books etc. That makes the input much more comprehensible and easier to learn. They'll probably learn most from that.

People act like kids don't get corrected all the time by more educated people such as friends, family and other children. There are grammar books for children and kids are constantly being instilled with how to use this vs that in conversation. It's constant bombardment and usage since birth. The four skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. It's formal and informal methods of instruction kids don't just acquire that's a polyglot myth of telling you what you want to hear. There's no acquiring without active study.

@@koen_hd You have hit the nail on the head 100% here, that's exactly what the current trend of "comprehensivle input" methods or learning are, for example "Dreaming Spanish" web and KZitem channels.
