Andy Salter reengineered the falling-apart sluice gate as a first step in restoring the “machine” that runs our antique water wheel, which he restored a couple years ago. The sluice gate is like a river lock. It lowers down to block the flow of the stream and creates a mill pond, which has been dug out for that very purpose. When the pond’s level reaches a certain height, a stream of water diverts down an engineered channel, called a race or a launder, which carries it to the top of the water wheel. There it falls into a series of “buckets” that sends the wheel into its (somewhat terrifying) spin. Back in the day, the spinning wheel would power a grinding-stone to mill grist or mash sorghum. We are trying to figure out a way to use it for our purposes… perhaps making beer or distilling gin! Or maybe just keeping us active and amused by the challenge.
