Those that have been in the military know we sing a cadence during many runs and marches, usually led by one of the senior NCOs. My term was no different, and one morning in Fort Benning, Georgia we had reached our objective a bit early, so we stopped to rest and were quiet, just catching our breath and taking some water. The sun was just coming up, we could begin to see our surroundings. The valleys were still enveloped in a light mist that would soon burn off, but we could hear the cadence of other units on their runs or marches, and it echoed through the hills. Hundreds of boots striking the ground at the same time made a low rumble. It was quite inspiring, and the feeling I had at the time was a bit of mystery and awe, hearing but not seeing, these units of soldiers moving about the grounds. You could not tell where the sound was coming from, it was echoing through the hills. It was a bit like hearing the deep sounds from the beginning of the Jaws soundtrack. Dexter, the sound of those Spartans would absolutely give me the chills.
01:49 Goosebumps EVERY time. One of my favorite scenes in any movie.

Without being career soldiers, a potter, a sculptor and a blacksmith took up arms and marched to their likely deaths in defense of their country. Their profession didn't matter, their hearts did. The wives, sons and daughters knew that these men would become warriors when the time would call for it and they did.
@mrreyes5004
11 ай бұрын
Leonidas' point is that he still brought more actual trained soldiers. I fully agree that those potters, sculptors, blacksmiths and other normal men were awesome for marching out to battle. But Leonidas wasn't arguing against that. The other Greeks were giving Leonidas a hard time about bringing less men to the war, and Leonidas pointed out that he brought more ACTUAL WARRIORS who had been fully trained to fight. Quality over Quantity; a few hundred war-trained badasses are more reliable for battle than thousands of average joes who have just been given weapons.

This reminds me of a moment during 9/11, after the attack on the Pentagon in Washington, when the military men wanted to rush past the firemen to get through to the breach to save their friends/colleagues, but the fireman literally fought to stop them, and at the moment when they nearly charged them the wall collapsed.... and the military men realised that despite their training certain people are designated to certain tasks. In the case of war civilians stand back and let soldiers do their job. In the case of a fire everybody else stands back and lets the firemen do their job
@giannismentz3570

Yes, I totally get it, and that's understandable that this video reminded you of a false flag terrorist scheme. This video also reminds me of a moment when we were losing 3-1 because everyone wanted to score, so we soon realised that it's best if certain people play their positions as they should, ie. defenders should stay somewhat back, midfielders should kind try and stay in the midfield etc. Obviously you gonna have moments where a defender will find himself infront and vice verca but we tried to avoid this after watching this video, and it helped us not only maintaining our positions, but also managing fatigue, and we ended up winning the match.

One of the few accurate parts of this movie: Leonidas did say this to his fellow Greeks when he met them on the trail. The leader of the other Greeks (Arcadians, Mycenaeans, Corinthians, Tegeans, Mantinaeans, and others) was actually an architect. However, in addition to the 300 full Spartiate hoplites, the Spartans also brought "squires" and a small number of support: Surgeons, medics, cooks, priests and so on. The total number of Lakedaemonians, including Spartans, was at least 700. The "squires" carried extra battle gear, helped their Spartans prepare, and were responsible for getting replacement spears to the Spartan warriors in the battle line, as the spears were the primary (and most deadly) weapon in phalanx combat. The xyphos short sword was more of a last resort, especially if the line was broken. I highly recommend reading Gates of Fire to anyone who wants to know what the Spartans were really like and what drove them to make the sacrifice at Thermopylae.
@Zach-lv5qs
2 жыл бұрын
Weren't there more than 300 that marched out? It was 300 that stayed and died, correct?
@GozerTheGozerian
2 жыл бұрын
@@Zach-lv5qs There were only 300 actual Spartans, and Leonidas only took men who already had children so their family lines would not be ended, because he knew it was a suicide mission. In addition to the 300 Spartan Peers, there were 300 or 400 other Lakedaemonians, including Messenian helots and perioikoi, which literally means "people around" Sparta. They were support, smiths, surgeons, cooks, etc. And there were a few thousand other Greeks from the cities I mentioned in my first post. So in total, about 4,000 to 7,000 Greeks vs about 300,000 Persians. The movie does a poor job of showing how they actually fought and held the pass. They did it by maintaining the phalanx formation the entire time in the narrow passage, so the Persians couldn't flank them or get past them. The only thing the Persians could do was throw more men at them, and those men were brave warriors but they were not properly trained or armored for that kind of brutal close quarters combat. In Gates of Fire, the Spartans are described as exhausted from killing so many Persians. They rotated with the other Greeks and killed something like 50,000 of the enemy in 3 days. It was insane.

The double flute was one of the first abstract Olympic events. At the field member cities pooled resources so a special gallery could be built, one designed specifically to resonate in harmony with notes played correctly on those very flutes. Judges were stationed around the gallery at very precise geometric positions where only the true note would be heard clearly. Those flutes were taken very seriously. Some were also fashioned with sharpened tips or made of metals intended for swords and shields. They could be, and were on occasion, used as weapons in actual combat. Some of the finest greek flute players had olympic nicknames that translate to things like "eye-gouger". These were skilled artists whose souls swelled with bounties of beautiful music. And some were also so good at war they proudly fought and won with their flutes. My brother played clarinet and beat one kid with it once. I think it might go without saying greek floutists were perhaps the most death metal of all flute players, ever. And to think, when most schools teach greek history its all togas and columns and rhetoric. Nobody mentions murder floutists winning laurels for perfect pitch while wearing thousand yard stares.
