Very good explanation of the functioning of an SPD. They have come down in price a lot now. Even though a lot of them have plugin modules, I struggle to find where I can purchase just the module on its own. Usually purchase the complete unit and bin the base.

That's sometimes the problem. These things should be available but its not cost effective for a wholesaler to stock them. Pity.

the conveyor belt analogy was brief and brilliant, can i ask if you have done an explanation video for 3 phase surge maximum conductor lengths as there seems to be to much confusion out there on whether all 3 conductors should be under 1m combined as apposed to only one of the phases needing to be 500mm, I hope that makes sense, good shout as always👍

How are you installing the device? You can get complete 3 phase SPDs, which will only have one outgoing earth connection, that you take to a solid earth point with as short a run as possible. If you are installing 3 individual single phase devices, then I would give each one its own cable to earth or use a short piece of busbar to link all three earths and then take a common cable from the busbar to the earth. I wouldn't daisy chain the earth connections on the devices and take a cable to earth from the last one in the chain.

What a really clear explanation of how an SPD works. I have been fitting them for some time now but was not clear on how they worked. One question though, I know their life expectancy will vary from area to area but what is the average realist life expectance of an SPD?
@three-phase562
Жыл бұрын
Life expectancy of an SPD is based upon how much energy it has to dissipate, which is a cumulative effect. On a low risk domestic installation I would expect then to easily last 10 years between EICRs. On a higher risk industrial installation, you can have major events that could eat away 10% of its life at a time and may need replacing in 2 or 3 years. But generally, they just get installed and forgotten about.

Can I ask if the spd has a 32A circuit breaker up stream and the spd device trips. Surely there should be an aux contact wired to annunciate that the breaker has tripped . Otherwise the tripped state of the spd will remain undetected?

Do SPDs protect from long duration brownouts (over-voltage due to loss of neutral in a 3-phase system)?

Hi sir, I have three phase DB feed 12 small consumer units with RCD’s for small offices I want to put SPD so what is the best way to put it in the DB or in each of the consumer units Thank u
@learnelectrics4402

3 phase SPDs are available for distribution boards and will be more economical on time and money than installing in twelve consumer units. If there is no room in the DB, the SPD can be installed in an external box, just keep the leads as short and straight as possible, avoid making loops with the conductors.
