I LOVED your chat about language and culture! I always tell people that learning a language is like unlocking a new world, but also, 2 languages is surprisingly difficult to maintain, especially if you also want to keep up with the trends haha. Ain't nobody got time for that... I would definitely want my future kids to learn at least basic Chinese, because I can't imagine not being able to share that part of me with them, but I do understand why a lot of 2nd gens don't want to learn it. It's a lot of work and they might not see the benefits from a practical standpoint. 继续加油哦!我期待你以后的分享:)

just wanna say i relate so much to what you guys said at the end. so im an abc and have never lived in china but am fluent in chinese. my parents never made me go to chinese school so i've never been but i just spoke chinese with them at home, watched chinese shows etc. whereas most of my abc friends were forced to go to chinese school but resisted and now they basically can't speak chinese, i find it pretty sad to see how so many abc's are so out of touch with the culture and language. and even tho im an abc, if i were to get married, it is a must for my s/o to speak chinese well (speaking english well is a plus) so that i can pass on the beautiful chinese language and culture to my kids if i were to have them

I like these vlogs where you speak Chinese and appreciate all the work you do in putting the subtitles in. I enjoy languages and the sounds they produce. I watch a lot of movies and dramas where I don't know the languages but enjoy them with and without subtitles. I may not know the words but I feel that I can follow the stories which makes it rewarding. I also feel speaking or knowing or being interested in other languages gives you an appreciation and respect for those countries. I hope you will do more of these in the future. Xiexie ni, Coco.

Growing up in New Zealand coming from a Chinese-speaking background, I can totally understand your situation and unsurprisingly completely relate to your situation. What I cannot believe is how much you still connect to our Chinese heritage and culture after growing up in a western environment. It does make me feel like I’m not alone and that there are people like you and I who can connect to our mother language and culture despite growing up in a western environment. I really connected with your topic on learning Chinese as a second language and understanding your true identity and how to use your mother language and second language appropriately in different contexts. And also Chinese is a beautiful language! Really glad that you guys spoke up about this topic and also you nailed this challenge 👏👏👏🔥❤️🍀🙌

I was born in Singapore but grew up in Canada since a young age. Sadly, I was very opposed to going to Chinese school growing up - because as a child's mind, you see your friends out on weekends while you're being shuffled to more classes. So I managed to convince my parents not to bring me to Chinese school anymore after a couple sessions of crying when 7-8 years old. Now that I'm older, and understand more about my Chinese heritage; I regret not learning Chinese and trying to do so presently informally and after COVID19 to go to China to be immerse in the usage naturally. (I can still speak & understand - just not write/read.) Especially with the trajectory of the world with China being 20% of the world's population & rapidly growing economy - it's not only about culture values but also a smart life choice IMHO. So ABCs should DEFINITELY learn Chinese even if they don't feel like to as a kid.

It offers the biggest platform for overseas Chinese too, which the country wherever they are residing in will never be able to offer, you can be politicians, astronauts, pilots, scientists, artists, conglomerates owners, and as Chinese, it can happen only because you have an association with China. I totally agree with your views on language and how it represents our cultural identity. But if your future kids are reluctant towards learning Chinese, I think it's on you to convince them why you think it's important, rather than just letting it be. I'm an Indian and most of my cousins in the States (born and brought up there) were initially reluctant in learning our language cuz they thought it was unnecessary. I shared with them a few interesting stuffs about our language (Telugu) and culture, which this bland language of English simply lacks, and also told them how it's common for many Indians to be able to speak at least 5 languages. Since then, they took it as a challenge to learn our language and now they're actually pretty good at reading and writing Telugu, joined local Telugu literary club and actively use it on a daily basis. The US is full of immigrants (US's economy is largely powered by people from east and south Asia) and most people migrating there are at a risk of getting culturally detached from their actual roots. I think we should keep our cultural identity intact, particularly in countries like US where everything tends to get neutralised and bland very quickly. It's not particularly a bad thing but for people whose language is already on the verge, like Tagalog (there is a sizeable population of them in US), it is a very unfortunate thing to happen.

I can definitely hear the English accent kicking in when she says the word 金汤利. In English, you raise the intonation for questions. And she naturally raises the intonation in that word, so the last syllable sounds funny. A more Chinese-dominant person would probably say 金汤利吗?because the -ma is the Chinese way to question something. You can't really change the tone of the character because changing the tone will just sound funny/weird, and it will make a different word or unrecognizable word.
