r comments and final marks (Audio 1)
Part 1 Interview
Grammar: The candidate uses a range of simple and complex structures (it tastes really delicious so I like its
taste… I also like when people eat it we gather around a large table and share the same pot. I think this can
make us more familiar and strengthen our relationship). There are some errors (I have talking about it
before… don’t want to eat a lot of things healthy), but these are quite rare so the candidate is just in Level 5.
Vocabulary: The candidate uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss a variety of ideas (ingredients,
spicy, delicious, gather round, share, warmth, depressed, to treat some friends…, balance).
Development: The candidates’ responses are relevant and consistently well- developed in the first two
questions. In response to question one, the candidate extends their response to cover family gathering
together and the feeling of warmth in winter. In response to question 2 the candidate gives a balanced view.
However, the candidate’s response to question three is more cursory. So lack of consistency limits the
candidate to Level 4.
Pronunciation: This is mostly clear despite some over-use of fillers, and the candidate sometimes uses
intonation to convey intended meaning (…when I feel really depressed),(, …cook by myself).
Part 2 Short talk
Grammar: A range of simple structures are used mostly accurately, and complex structures are attempted.
The candidate uses the modal can, verb tenses are mainly limited to the present tense, infinitives and the will
+ future. The candidate uses some linking words and discourse markers (so, because, but, and the second
way), but their response generally lacks cohesion.
Vocabulary: The candidate uses a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriately (nowadays, figuring out, daily
lives, damage the environment, straws, novelty shops) to convey a variety of ideas.
Development: Responses are relevant and mostly developed. The candidate comments on the difficulty of
managing without plastic, giving the example of trying to use the plastic that are not so harmful. The
candidate also comments on the pros and cons of walking or cycling to school. The candidate briefly mostly
weighs up both options and decides on the second option. However, the second response was not as well
developed as the first response, so the mark is in Level 4.
Pronunciation: This is mostly clear, however, the level of fillers, pausing and rephrasing (by our, by
ourselves, exer… exercise by, by doing, by walking) limits the mark awarded. Intonation is sometimes used
effectively to convey intended meaning.
Part 3 Discussion
Grammar: The candidate uses a good range of verb tenses: future, passive, present continuous (will harm,
… was not so developed,… is really developing…, will be damaged) and attempts some complex structures
(Our society is developing and buying fewer things will just make it develop slower so I think that’s not the
solution to deal with this problem from the past), but they lack cohesion so the response is put in Level 4.
Vocabulary: The candidate uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey their ideas and opinions (harm
the environment, new methods, solution, civilisation, society). Although develop is used repetitively, it is used
in different forms so this does not limit the mark awarded to the response.
Development: The responses to question 1 are relevant, but not really developed and quite repetitive. In
question 2, the candidate responds by disagreeing and stating that buying fewer things will slow down the
development of their society, but doesn’t develop the response further. The candidate does not quite fulfil the
criteria for Level 4.
Pronunciation: This is mostly clear. There is some rephrasing (build a lot of house, build a lot of buildings,
we find, found, we can’t buy, we buy) and intonation is sometimes used effectively to convey intended
meaning.
