As a disabled child at disney it always made me feel special when characters would bend down to talk to me or if they couldnt talk they'd grab the back of my wheelchair and race round the park with me or form a conga line hahaa always was the best!

The last trip we took with my son before he passed away was the most amazing memorable and best time of his life. He had cerebral palsy and one day he was in his coach eating with his feeding tube and we went into see Ariel and the cast members there let our family go in all by ourselves. They were amazing with him and the photos that I have he has the biggest smile I've ever seen him smile and his life. A month later he passed away but I will always have those memories of his last trip. You're amazing and Disney need you back!!! 🙏🏼

MAW kids could always run a high water bill, but here's one of my standout with a disabled kid. There were many blind guests that would use their hands to see the characters. There were also many deaf guests. For them, meeting some of the characters was amazing. The characters couldn't talk and neither could they, but their hands could write a story together. There wasn't a need for an interpreter. My favorite story is as simple as it can get. It was around 2pm, and I could see a father struggling to get his son to leave the park. He had autism (was probably later teens) and didn't want to leave for a break. He wasn't making a scene and neither was the son, but I could tell he was frustrated. I was on Main Street without many guests wanting pictures. So I just walked up to the son and started talking to him about how it always rains like clock work here, every day at 4pm and being caught out in the rain with wet shoes and wet socks was no fun. I even told him that as a photographer we had to go indoors too because we couldn't get wet. I ask "It's not much fun walking around in wet shoes now is it?" boy "no" I replied "So you'd have to go back to the hotel to get dry clothes and dry shoes on" Boy "yeah, I guess so" I made a bargain with him "So if you go back to the hotel with your dad, and wait for the rain to stop, I can give you something special." Boy, intrigued now, "ok" I gave him 6 anytime fastpasses and told him he could ride all three mountains when he got back in the park later without waiting. (My friend worked at the rides and would get the generic fastpasses to hand out if the ride shut down, so I'd keep a special stash next to my photopass cards). He happily agreed and left the park with his dad. I knew I diffused a meltdown, but I also didn't think much of it. Two days later while I was in the park, working in a completely different area, the father found me again. All he did was say "Thanks". Those two have stuck with me ever since.

The mustang club I'm in donated a large sum of money to the Give Kids the World foundation a few months back from a car show we put on with the help of the a Camaro club in my area. When we all pulled into the village with our Mustangs and Camaros I was tearing up over the happy and awe stuck expressions they were making over our cars. One kid was all over my 2005 V6 Mustang, I talked to this kid for a good 30 minutes about my car until he and I had part ways because I was going on a tour of the facility and he was going to Disney World. To this day I tear up over the fact that I made those kids day, I will never forget that experience.

I have a little brother who as pretty severe autism and he gets over stimulated very easily but he absolutely loves Disney world! He's not able to talk fluently at all but at random times he'll just be like "Disney Disney Disney" and point towards the door and want us to leave for Florida. I'm very grateful to Disney for giving him something that he takes so much joy in, and the people at Disney are just wonderful with caring to his and other disabled people's needs, with the exception of a few rude and ignorant guests, it's a very positive environment for him! It sucks a lot that they had to take away that special pass because my bother can't stand still for long periods of time at all, but still they do a lot to help and I am so happy he has a place like Disney that he can really let loose and have fun! It makes my vacation just getting to see him that happy!

When I was younger, about 15 years ago, right around the height of Toy Story, a cast member at Hollywood Studios that I was having issues with standing in the long line for the Buzzlightyear meet and greet, 2+hours, I had my earplugs plugged with my fingers as I have form of Sensory Processing Disorder, and they took my entire party out of line and got us a disability pass for the rest of our vacation allowing us to skip the line. That made our trip.

I know that probably helped, I have my son take headphone type things like used at a gun range when we go to theme parks because he also has SPD. I have watched his pupils go from normal to completely blown when his fight or flight process goes off when the noise and commotion get passed his limits. It is scary as a parent to be able to actually see that happen with your child. He also gets severe anxiety as well and it scares me to see him like that. He once thought we got locked into a hallway at a doctors office and he went into full blown anxiety attack and it took about 45 mins to calm him down.

When we took our daughter Terra; who has autism, to Walt Disney World for the first time back in October of 2011 she finally opened up and started talking. She was fours years old and only would say one or two words at a time. Thanks to this trip and her excitement she started using more words and requesting to see and do more specific activities. It's all but mandatory in her IEP that we go to WDW every two years because of how much growth she demonstrates.

A few years ago, my family went to Disney World. My brother was 8 and he has Down Syndrome, which made some things tough. We skipped a few lines, and we had some accidents too. My favorite part of the trip was of my brother skipping Pooh and Piglet, and going straight to tigger (his favorite character at the time)! We have tons of pictures of him looking so happy! Later, we went to meet the princesses and he got a kiss from all of them! That one one of my best weeks... Ever!

We wanted as many happy memories as we could get just in case. Disney was 100% awesome towards my little sister when my family went to Disney. Wheelchair, severe cerebral palsy. Every cast member went out of their way to make time for her, to give her special attention, to make her moments there wonderful and memorable. We couldn't thank cast members enough. They handled her nerves, her wheel chair (for rides), her lack of speech, everything as easily as they handled her huge smiles of pure joy.

Getting to see the other side of a theme park has opened my eyes and now, when I spot a special needs kid or make a wish family (sometimes it can be really obvious but not always) If they are in line behind me or even a few spots behind me, I let them go ahead of me, and if they are a few spots behind, I talk to the people behind me in line and get them in on it, has made for some awesome moments in the parks

He can not stand in long lines at all and using the disability pass literally saved our lives and allows us to go to Disney at all. He loves rides, especially it's a small world and buzz, and meeting the characters (especially tiger). Even though we've had a few problems with guests complaining at us, the employees have always been helpful and lovely and kind and just a makes everything just such a joy to be at Disney.

I was at Walt Disney World last week with my family, and I'm a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland. So I got in line to meet Alice with my Mom. We let a mom and grandma who had a little girl with what I assumed to be severe breathing troubles go ahead of us. I didn't really mind, I was going to meet Alice right after her. She actually noticed that I was wearing a Tomorrowland pin and was trying to let me know that she liked the movie. And when she met Alice, Alice was so nice to her that I just couldn't help smiling.

I have a story with Pixie Hollow too!! My daughter has autism and we had the special pass. When she was six, we went to meet the princesses (that were next door). I asked the person at the door if we could use the pass and they said no. We waited for over a hour, which was fine. When we got to the front, the attendant there saw our pass and said we shouldn't have waited. He arranged for us to meet the princesses by ourselves for a few minutes! This meant that all the princesses could play with my daughter at the same time. Then as if that wasn't great enough, we were brought the back way to the fairies and got alone time with them too! It was very magical!

The Disney characters are probably some of the nicest people on the planet. Especially on the cruises where not that many people are in line. I'm so glad that Disney cares about disabilities and medical conditions as much as they do. I actually have a very light case of cerebral palsy with my right hand, so it bends down and out and I can't control my fingers very well and I'm also blind in my right eye. I wore a leg brace to help with my limp my first time to Disney and from what I can remember the characters and staff were very accepting and helpful

"You take them as they are and accept them as they are." I love that you said that. While people with special needs and disabilities need special accommodation, the biggest thing is to treat them as you would, or at least SHOULD, any other human being, with respect and dignity. Yes, there is so leniency given depending on the circumstance, but people with special needs and disabilities shouldn't be treated as though they are less than others or with the mentality that there is "something wrong with them." They are human beings who can still do amazing things. This is not saying that you view disabled or special needs people this way. I just loved that you said that they should be loved and accepted as they are.

Because I have cerebral palsy, even though I can walk and function pretty much normally, I need a rental wheelchair at Disney because walking or standing too much consecutively makes my legs hurt like crazy. So when I was in the wheelchair at Disney World last February, I was watching the Festival of Fantasy parade, Merida waved at me as she went by on top of the float and called down "Hello, Princess!" and that made the rest of my day.

My parents and I went to Universal 2 years ago for our last trip as a family. My mom was battling cancer and she couldn't walk or stand for long distances. She was using a scooter in the park and with each ride, we were able to use a wheelchair to get her through the cue. On one of the rides, we had to use the ada side for my mom to be able to ride it because of the moving walkway. We rode it and when we came back into the loading area, the cast member running it allowed us to ride a 2nd time as no one was waiting for the ada side at the time. It made for a special memory that I cherish.

You mention the kids crying over the characters, and then you guys holding back tears, and as you were explaining, I even started to tear up. See I was born with Juvenile Rhumetoid Arthritis, and I went to Disney when I was three/four, with my grandparents. This was 86/87, and I don't remember anything about the trip. I have wanted to go back ever since. It started as my wanting to go again, and turned into me wanting to be able to go, at time I could remember it. All I know is that I loved the pools, loved the dolphin show, and went on It's a Small World, with my grandpa, 8 times in a row. What kind of makes me sad is because I grew up poor, I never got to go back as a child. I would have loved the special treatement I think. I want to go when I can finally afford it, but as an adult, I'm not sure it will be quite the same. That being said, having a disabled mother may get my son some special something, and that would be awesome because I know it bothers him that his mom is sick. He takes it in such stride though, and never hesitates to help when and where he can. He's really something special. (He's 8 lol)

Fantastic video! One of my fav stories was being at WDW and watching a young boy playing on the planters by the candy store in frontier Land. I was in one of the rocking chairs as I was feeling overwhelmed by the crowds and my anxiety was high. He was very much about textures, feeling the wood, shifting the dirt, touching the plants. I noticed his mom and asked "does he have Autism?" She blinked at me in surprise and said "Yes, he does. How did you know?" "He is interacting with the world in a very unique way." "He is certainly unique!" Said his mom, grinning at me. We ended up talking for awhile about how hard it could be for her son but also how amazing Disney was with helping her family. I ended up keeping an eye on the wee guy while his mom got in some shopping, which we also laughed about because only in Disney do you feel safe leaving your child with a stranger! Lol She could see us the entire time through the windows, but this way she didn't have to worry about him running off. We saw each other a few more times through that week and on the last day I got a high five from him which shocked everyone. Seriously fav moment! Just a quick note... it's actually "Jacobsen", for "Andrea Jacobsen". Easy mistake to make!

Thanks for sharing these stories - we all go thru rough patches or feel we have our large woes or troubles that are unfair or dealing with what we feel are great burdens but it only takes a moment in the presence of Special Needs or Make A Wish Families and we realize how really blessed our lives are - Of course these children are really a blessing to all who meet them and their families =====I am not sure if it is part of the Disney Rules and Training but I once saw a "confession" as it were from a Disney Princess - I think it was Snow White my favorite, but when she was sharing about what she would do when meeting children and one of the actions really stuck with me - When meeting and sharing hugs with children she said I always allow the child be the first to let go because you never know how much they need. I want to keep that as something I try to remember to do or adapt in situations that I have with people I meet.

She has a very good memory, usually reminding us of things I can never recall. I asked her, and he said she remembers! I can't wait to visit you in July, and I'll see you then! - Your other niece

I have high functioning autism and cerebral palsy and the best moments dealing with the character spots recently was with Goofy and Pluto in dinoland at animal kingdom, Goofy danced a hoedown with me, Cinderella and Ariel took time with me and were mega sympathetic, and talking mickey left me in joyful tears, the photo pass people at some of the characters spots outside weren't that accommodating to my needs but spose not everyone can be accommodating to everyone's needs

my brother has autism and it's always been an amazing experience taking him to disneyland! he enjoys it there and i'm always blown away by how amazing cast members are and how helpful they can be when we're there. a few years ago we went around christmas, and my bro was absolutely shocked to see a real life Mater at Cars Land (his favorite character), so much that he patiently waited in line for a chance to take pictures. (both things he's gotten better at, but he doesn't enjoy those things usually) not only did he stand there and take pictures with mater, but he even started talking to him and wished him happy holidays when we left. we were amazed because while he's in no ways nonverbal, often he has trouble finding what words and phrases go with a particular situation. that was probably my favorite moment i've ever witnessed while being in a disney park. hopefully we can take my brother there again very soon!

I would Love to be a stay at home disney Travel Agent. I love helping families plan their trips. And that is a job I can do at home. Without using to much of my energy. I love your videos. the line jump is great when my family goes, my mom has RA and it hurts her to stand for long times. We get to come back to the ride after a wait elsewhere and its great.

Make A Wish is great. My son who had a friend in school. He had cancer at a very young age. When he was a teenager they grant him a wish. Everything paid was for by Make A wish. This kid talked about it for years. Like you said they all don't die but the families put so much money in medical bill they don't have any money to go on a trip. That how Make A Wish helps out. I only can talk about this group because it is the only one I have seen.I heard of the other group and I heard they work together.

Somebody further down commented how you can go to smile.amazon.com, and give to your fave charity with no cost to you - I have done that for GKTW Village for several years. Costs you nothing, and very easy to do. GREAT idea, and WTG Amazon for doing that!

Yes it's a great way to support your favorite charity. I've only got 2 issues with smile.amazon.com- you can only support one charity at a time (we list our church), and it's a very small percentage (about 0.5%). But still very cool that you can donate a little bit and not do anything different than you normally would. But if you really want to help a charity, a direct donation is much more effective. :-)

Totally agree with all you say, & support GKTW directly also, & for special events, like the Annual Gingerbread Run, & am wearing 1 of their funraising shirts I bought right now. 😊 I'm even hoping to be lucky enough to make it back to the area someday, & volunteer some time thete!! 😊

This reminds me of back before Disney had to change the policy. Thy were so wonderful with my family and my severely autistic brother, especially for the fast passes and the accommodations they made to ensure we could have a wonderful experience, I remember it so well because it was the first time I ever got to ride it's a small world and now that ride is so special to me ( this was in the 1990s and i was young but it was one of the last vacations we took to Disney as the entire family)

It's such a shame that they had to stop front of line access for special needs children because of a few rich jerks cheating the rules.

Connely Chauvin I went to Disney back in Feb with my family. I had to have a scooter, because I have mild Cerebral Palsy. (meaning I can sorta walk.) I was never first in line, because I would park my scooter & stand in line just like everyone else, but the one day I decided to drive the scooter through the line for the safari ride in Animal Kingdom the one girl let me get on the ride using the wheelchair/ scooter access gate & she was so incredibly kind to me. Another girl who was working at the beauty & the beast show very kindly told me I could park my scooter inside the theater dome. I told her that I have Cerebral Palsy & that walking short distances are okay for my leg. She said okay & smiled at me. A storm trooper came up to me and started talking to me once they saw that I was sitting in a scooter. The kindness that they all showed me made me feel like it was okay that I'm disabled, because I'm still important. The kindness they showed me was unbelievable. I've never had anyone be that compassionate about my disability outside of Disney World. While I wasn't first in line they definitely made me feel very welcome. I'm 20 years old & they still treated me so kindly. I'm very impressed at how well they've been trained to help people like me with disabilities

They haven't stopped front of the line for special needs guests. In cases where the person has life threatening disabilities or wishes they have a protocol just for them. The people in wheelchairs and scooters either go through the regular queue or the handicap one, and if a guest can't stand in a line than they are given a return time. With the return time it can be used anytime after the time given for 1 ride. Six Flags requires a doctors handwritten note stating you can't stand in a normal queue before they will allow you disabled access. That's boardering on discrimination and HIPAA violations.

I remember reading a Reddit AMA of someone who was a cast member for many years, and some of those special experiences he talked about are just too much to NOT cry. What would a cast member do if they couldn't hold back the tears while on the job?

One of your get ones. I am disable. I went the first time with a scooter to WDW in 2012. They would put me up front for the rides with I hate but that how it was done. We went again in 2014 and now you get a book that they put return times in. I like this because people were not staring as bad. Cast Member treated me great. The other visitors is he problem. They set in front of the scooter with made me stop fast and cause me sharp pain. But again the Cast Member were all great.
