SFAS in April 1989, they send us on the obstacle course. The only cadre out were by the rope climbs so sort of apparent what they were looking for. Since my high school had ropes in our school gym, the feet thing was the way to go as weak upper body types are up the rope slapping the top. Some dude still on the ground hopping up and down in futility not going anywhere and cadre tells him to get out of here and he was gone at gate 1. It had been 15 years since high school and had not seen a rope since then. Selected and a very successful 1990s decade 18E.

WRONG. Wrap your dominant leg around the rope. Calf over rope and rope resting over the metatarsals. Hold on. Do a crunch. With your thighs, glutes, abs extend your body with your hands being the guide. In the real world you will never work with a dry rope. It WILL be covered with oil, grease, water, blood, goop, sand, shit, piss, etc... Hence, you will need to find those friction points. Coming down? Speed rope. If you are unaware of what that is Google it.

Damn you gotta love ODA's! Gotta love the experts here claiming "overthinking" or how this is basic stuff. Duh! Special Operations always focus on fundamentals and are absolute experts at that, something as common sense and basic as this rope climb technique is evidence of that. They strive for efficiency, not complexity!

You didn't demonstrate the second technique properly which would have been bringing your left foot on top of your right above the rope to create friction rather than on the side of your boot. Some people seem to do better with the second "S" technique rather than the J hook.

What are you talking about? This is the exact method that we've used in the Corps for over 20 years. We're also taught to stand on the rope using this method, freeing our hands, by leaning forward into the rope. What I find hilarious is that the guy decided to use a far too short, multi-shaded green rope against his camouflage uniform to give instruction. Give the rope another foot or two and maybe make it bright yellow or red so it's clearly visible. Edit to add a random video posted over 3 years ago: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mZuruKeknp9_hX4

@@coreydailey4939 That's strange. I'll have to call my son and see what he learned. He was in from 2013 to 2017. It's weird that the Corps would move away from that. We've compared notes on boot camp but not too that level of detail. Everything seems almost identical with the exception of the crucible (they added/tested that while I was in the fleet). Semper Fi

I think I used this in Infantry. But my natural brute strength owing to my Corps meant that I burned right up to the top of the rope with my upper body strength like some kind of hulk and they had to usher me down at cannon-point with an Apache helicopter until I utilised the J hook. Their mistake.
