Check out “Deal With The Devil” by Peter Lance, if you’re into books about mobsters. This one is about Scarpa. Evidently, the FBI used him to solve the civil rights murder case dramatized in the movie “Mississippi Burning.” The story is, they gave Scarpa some names and addresses and sent him to “sweat”them for information, specifically the place where 3 murdered civil rights activists were buried. Scarpa stuck a gun in some KKK guy’s face and gave him The Choice: Talk or Die. The guy talked, and claimed for years that he’d been “shook down” for the info by some goon from up north…

Scarpa was NEVER a boss! He actually wasn't even a caporegime, or 'captain,' (in English) for the longest time. His son, Greg Jr, actually made capo before his father. But then, whenever you have free reign given to you by the FBI... I guess you kind of are as powerful, if not, moreso, than any Cosa Nostra family boss can be! How did he get this "free reign" I just mentioned? Back in the 1960s, whenever the disappearance/killings of Civil Rights Freedom Riders Chaney, Goodman, & Schwerner happened in Mississippi, the FBI recruited Scarpa to go down there & find their bodies, which the FBI just could not do, and by God, Scarpa got that information! He is alleged to've done unspeakably torturous things to KKK members to get it.... But, he got it! (And who gives a damn about a tortured KKK member or two, anyway?!) And I'm sitting here in 2021, Scarpa long gone, and it is what it is. Whadaya gonna do? Was Cosa Nostra an evil life? I believe it eventually became not much more than that, particularly in the 1970s & into the 1980s, when bodies were being found, left, right, & center. But they originally came here as a 'secret society,' fleeing the Fascist Benito Mussolini's Italy, & serving as a sort of 'shadow government' for the Italian-American immigrant community. Furthermore, I do believe they originally intended to be an honorable society, & took their honor very seriously. And they're certainly, CERTAINLY no worse than present-day law enforcement, what w/their manufacturing of consent & qualified immunity, all backed up by the United States Supreme Court! Yeah, I'd rather deal w/Cosa Nostra than law enforcement any day of the week, & twice on Sunday! I'd certainly trust their word more than the cops, 200%! And I guess that's because, with my grandfather, father, & many uncles' membership in the 'once-very-mobbed-up' Pipefitters Union Local #562, St. Louis, MO, who did business with both the Giordano Crime Family of Cosa Nostra, & the Syrian Mob in St. Louis, headed up by once-enemy of Al Capone, 'Horseshoe Jimmy' Michaels, who was actually a friend of my grandfather's.... I've been around a few tough guys in my almost 40 yrs. Sure, I have. Maybe that's why I'd show deference to the Mob before I would 'Johnny Law.' I don't really know. All I can say, we all are capable of being good, of being bad, and some of us are capable of being plumb ugly. I think Cosa Nostra was the same way. And you'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) at the people in NYC, New Jersey, Philly, & all throughout the New England area who'll tell you that the community was much safer back when Cosa Nostra were at the height of their power & still around. And it isn't hard, if you pay attention to the world AT ALL, why folks would feel that way! I'm sorry for this short novel of a comment, but thank you for indulging a Cosa Nostra enthusiast. Make your own calls as to whether it was worth it or not to give Scarpa, again, "free reign," for the recovery of Goodman, Chaney, & Schwerner's bodies. If you asked the 3 young men's families... Well... Nevermind. I'll leave that up to you.😉

Greg Scarpa was sentence to a slow death for all the mayhem he caused families for all the hits he did. A made man once accused him of being a snitch and Scarpa killed him. He was the Grim Reaper! IRL!
