Minerals may portray very similar specific gravity values. When this is the case, it is useful to consider a multitude of diagnostic criteria. Nevertheless, specific gravity is still useful if the instruments used to record this value are precise and calibrated.
This video reviews the calculations for specific gravity and shows how quartz can be distinguished from heliodor, the yellow variety of beryl. I have created a spreadsheet that you may screenshot and print to perform your own specific gravity test. This spreadsheet also shows you how to calculate percent error and normalize your values to account for instrument inaccuracy.
