I think the softness comes from lack of adjustability of the diy lens distance between the sensor and the lens. I remember my old viltrox speedbooster has the adjustability function by spinning the lens inside the speedbooster to adjust infinity focus for different lenses.

Next time, to remove those rings use a classic watchmaker trick to remove screw-on casebacks easily without damage: a rubber ball. They grip the whole surface and it won't damage the lens, you'll have it out in seconds

It's not cheap, US is not the whole world. Used / private import from China 145$ New in local shop 180$ But what next ? YONGNUO 35,50 mm and other manual EF ? Where EFM prices end, EF begin. I accidentally bought a speedbooster at a big discount. I had no pressure on EF lenses, after about half a year I grabbed YONGNUO 35 and 50 in another good promotion. At regular prices, I never took it seriously.

I like your ingenuity and resourcefulness, trying to achieve your goal for as little money as possible. I have the same approach when adapting lenses where a proper mount is not available. How do you calculate the actual new focal length and f-stop?
@filmedbyMakarios
8 ай бұрын
Thanks! I just love to make cheaper alternatives for expensive ones! For focal length, multiply the focal distance of the lens (ex. 50mm) to the multiplier of the speed booster (for viltrox, 0.71x). Then multiply it by your camera's crop factor (1.6x for apsc) then thats it. Then for the focal length from what i saw from other video, you will just multiply the f stop to the multiplier of the speed booster(correct me if I'm wrong). This speedbooster that I've made has a multiplier of 0.45x as said on the description of the product.

For some lenses like my 18-55 kitlens, it has vignette on it on 18mm. But if you adjust the crop just a little bit (for crop mood in magic lantern), it will eliminate the vignetting. The settings that I've used on the video is the full sensor readout of the 1.6x crop of APSC.

Can't you just add a wide angle lens at the front of the lens for the same effect as a speed booster?
@peterhansuwurst7852
7 ай бұрын
To get a wider field of view you can of course use a lens with a wider angle. A speed booster has the added benefit, that, if you use a lens made to cover a bigger sensor (e.g. a ef lens on an ef-m or rf mount camera with aps-c sensor) a speedbooster will focus the light onto the sensor, that would otherwise just hit the inside of the camera. So you get more light onto the sensor (usually around one stop), have a wider field of view and it also changes the bokeh since a lens + speedbooster is basically a new lens with a bigger aperture.

Yes, I've tried it but it has heavy vignetting on native 1.6x crop (default apsc sensor). If you use magic lantern, I suggest that you use higher crop settings like 2.5k or UHD so it will zoom a little bit. This is perfect for kit lenses btw😊
