I know this video is a little old but I stumbled across it. Aside from ram and ssd the factor that is affecting your playback, rendering, etc is your gpu. You have a 4gb Radeon in there which isn’t terrible, but I’d def recommend at least an RX 580 or more for editing 4k smoothly. Thanks for the video!

I love the background song !!! Why am I dancing watching a tech channel!? hahaha! Man, I got a 64gb RAM on my PC and Premiere Pro crashes like I still have only 4gb DDR2 on it. You are correct, SSD will be more beneficial, I am planning to get a new GEN4 NVME hopefully next month. BTW, You really put a lot of effort here! Congrats! I've just bought a LaCie Rugged Pro thunderbolt SSD for my 2018 Mac Mini, after upgrading the RAM to 32GB. I've tested the LaCie's speeds, and I'm getting over 2,600MB for read and write. I've now set up the Properties and Project Settings on Resolve to use the new SSD for render files and proxy files. I keep original media on a separate, slower Sandisk SSD (read & write speeds just over 1,000MB). The LaCie drive has been my best investment so far. Using thunderbolt you can achieve much higher speeds than USB-C. If you optimise the Properties and Project Settings, you can get on with your projects without even noticing the rendering that's going on in the background.

Hello i am quite interested in this strategy but i have some question. Because last year my computer crash and i lost all files from 2.5 years. So i want to understand the strategy you using . So does this mean that when you makling a video you dont save anything to your computer? and then every time you want to make a video you plug you ssd in? and then when you finish the video , you keep the project files on ssd but then the finished video on Hdd? What if you are not able to finish working on project 1 one day and have to keep insert external hard drive in and out day after day , sometimes i get a message when i try to eject drive and then im not able to . Can you explain your technique a bit mroe thanks

@@eeforest7122 Hi~ You are right. I am doing my editing using my external ssd (It's an internal SSD + outer enclosure), but I only plug in and out my SSD once a week as I didn't really move my laptop. I did not save anything in my laptop because my laptop is a combination of 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD. SSD is almost full of my software installation, and my HDD is quite slow when editing video. Initially I do my work using external HDD, but it broke down in a sudden due to the USB connection problem, not HDD problem... And I lost everything. So I bought an internal SSD + outer enclosure, and I use it as an external SSD, so if the USB connection got problem, I can buy a new enclosure and solve the problem. Editing using SSD is faster. After done, I save the final video into my internal HDD. The original mp4 from camera are still in my working SSD.

Thanks for the video Paul. Saw you did some cool key frame effects that inspired me. I have ungraded to a Cannon Vixia 4k camera. But the bummer is in editing now in 4k the timeline is slower now. I have upgraded my ram and saw no difference. My worry is that the USB 3.1 drive may lag. I have a HDD it is still laggy on the timeline. I use Kdenlive and am using a i7 over 5 years old! Hi, Your video was really put together well and loved the format, but I was wondering if you've had any experience with using continuity camera. I'm trying to determine if my continuity camera stopped working due to the slow speed of my external or it's software related. I can get it working in a new login account after everything loads in , but not in my regular account where I have many apps running at the same time. Should I assume that simply upgrading to an SSD, any SSD will do the trick or is there one that you can recommend? I would want at least a 2tb drive, but might only afford a 1tb. I am using an iMac i7 2017 64 gb ram OS Ventura Thanks in advance.

Hey! Glad you liked the video. Although I haven’t got experience using the continuity camera I assume it’s recording in h.264, which is not ideal when using a “normal” external hard disk. Upgrading to an SSD should help, but I can’t guarantee it. However, when im editing h.264 footage from a non SSD disk, it’s really choppy and if the clip is long it’s sometimes impossible to even open. After switching completely to SSDs I have no issues whatsoever. There should be links to good SSDs in the video description. Hope this helps ;)

@@PaulHeimlund Hey Paul, Unfortunately I’m one of those guys who takes a long time to decide and then I have to have it! Unfortunately I couldn’t wait to give you the business. Sorry about that. I bought a My passport 2tb SSD high speed NVME 1050 Mob transfer locally and it still doesn’t work for some reason. I just loaded the OS, so there aren’t any other possible software conflicts, but I’m getting the same error “Lost connection to deskview” and the other software that I use it will give me the options, but a blank screen. I go back and forth with eternal boot ups. It’s funny because it did work. It was a surprise to me one day that I was doing something else with the camera and it activated all by itself. It appeared that it stopped after I did small upgrades to the MAC and my iPhone. I Iove the external thought. It is blazing fast, but until I figure this out I won’t be loading anything else in it other than Mac OS Ventura for troubleshooting, so I keep going back to the old, slow external, because I practically lived in it. Frustrating to say the least. I want and need to use it right away. Thanks so much! I’ll keep you posted.

The issue I run into though is exporting anything over 2 minutes, so I have to work in small bits to compile a 6 minute video. Wish there were an easier way to key out a face as accurately as AE (I've done some in PP but the frame by frame tracking took forever to clean up because it didn't follow as well as the rotobrush in AE).
