To me the music, besides a few on the nose Christian tracks, were always spiritual and open to interpretation without shoving any message down the listeners ear. I appreciate that perspective not just in music but for sharing faith with others through actions.

very wise words. i don't ever recall Jesus forcing anyone to follow him. he offered the truth, and suggested to those with good hearts to stop what they were doing and trust in him, and they did it. Jesus preached non-aggression, voluntarism principles, he was pretty much a libertarian. all he did was offer people the truth through love, and left it up to them. the theology of it all is freewill, letting his creation make their own decisions, because a God who forces his creation to do anything has created nothing but slaves incapable of love.

I was in a well known band from Knoxville, TN called Copper (fun fact, our singer was Keith Wallen who is now the rhythm guitarst for Breaking Benjamin and deserves every shred of success he has. Awesome guy.) 11 years ago, we toured, i lived out my dreams, did questionable things. etc. I was a Christian then and did my best to show it, but as a 20 year old who was just handed the world, I just wanted to play music most of all and still do. I drank and partied yes, but I never denied Him before men, which I thing is the worst thing you can do. Spencer hasn't denied Christ, he's just saying that he loves music and takes artistic decisions. After playing 10,000 shows with secular AND Christians bands both, I totally understand what he means. But we love Jesus and that's a big reason why we listen to Underoath!

Very well put! Literally you gave my childhood/younger years life though because of that christian label. I always wanted to decide for myself who i was and what i believed in but was force fed the church from my parents. They would go through my things and literally threw out all of my music that wasnt listed as christian. I had to do my best to hide cds and then when i was 11 or 12 i got into underoath, norma jean, as cities burn etc and that music was what i wanted and needed. It was heavy, it was wild, the shows had so much energy and i didnt have to hear about fucking purity rings. And all because of that silly label you guys chose i was able to choose for myself the music i got to hear even if i had to hear other bands at Cornerstone Orlando fest preach haha at 22 now i know my life would not be the same without the few bands cds that didnt get thrown away paving the way and expanding my musical interests as well as my love for live music.

"I hope we didn't piss god off too much by not doing what we're supposed to do". - You are not obliged to write music purely about your faith, just because other religious bands do. That's crazy. You should always write music about whatever you want, or feel at the time; religious or not. Spencer hasn't put a foot wrong, so he shouldn't feel as though he's made a mistake, or any other member of the band for that matter.

To everyone giving Spencer shit, a whole year and a half after UO broke up, you're forgetting a very important line in the beginning of statement where he says "our hearts are in the same place they have always been." What he's saying isn't that they're not Christians and that it does not inspire their music, but that they're not an evangelism or ministry band. Underoath said what they said because they wanted to be honest with people and say "God loves you", but I think a bunch of bands took that to mean that they're a ministry band in the metalcore/hardcore scene trying to preach the gospel. Fast forward and we now have much more open or evangelistic "Christian" metal bands like Sleeping Giant & For Today. It's not a bad thing, but that was never Underoath's intention and the downside is that UO kind of paved the way for it.

I don't necessarily agree. Listen to their actual lyrical content. Obviously they have regressed heavily since the days with Dallas and death metal, but even on their only chasing safety they had "some seek forgiveness.. others escape" I feel they have regressed away from their Christian roots which I will support them either way, and love them and their music, but I always liked that "light in the darkness" niche they represented .

Long rant from a long time fan with no focus outside of loving Underoath. Also a strange bit about wearing tight pants before it was normal: I’ve been an Underoath fan since the early 2000s when the changing of times dropped my brother put me onto them because he listened to them for a while with Dallas as the lead singer. Then They’re Only Chasing Safety dropped and the sound was so different from all their heavier previous works. Somehow They’re Only Chasing Safety broke through into the mainstream music world and screamo went into full swing. Crazy how subcultures and trends come and go. The metalcore and screamo days of the 2000s hayday are over replaced by rap. Personally I love the old and new Underoath. I always saw them as a real band. They helped me feel better during jr high and high school and I really looked up to the whole band, especially Spencer. My older brother looked like him and started dressing like him so then I started wearing right pants too: I remember feeling nerdy wearing tight pants before it was normalized. I felt like I was probably being judged but I liked the look. The main drawback was not having a lot of space for the junk and being a young kid full of raging hormones theres not much way to hide your jewels in tight pants. Ended up doing the hotdog up in the belt loop trick on too many occasions when I didn’t have a binder to hold over myself. Lord forgive me lol. I made a huge production graphics final project during high school featuring underOATH makings complete CD design with the album art, the CD art, a catalogue for Solid State giving a bio and description of all the biggest bands at the time. I made a huge poster with guns on it for Solid State tracing over revolvers with vector lines in Adobe Illustrator. Looking back I’m surprised that project got an A and was allowed. I didn’t think twice about drawing giant guns all over a huge poster and littering them casually in designs for the catalogue. My favorite part was designing the CD, putting a mix of my favorite Underoath songs on there, and writing the lyrics in the booklet. I still have all of that except the poster which I threw out years ago. Anyways Underoath gave me so many good memories. Saw them live in Chicago on the tour for They’re Only Chasing Safety along with The Chariot and some other band. They killed it. Sold out show and it was packed. I have some old flip phone footage somewhere. I’m really happy they are making music again. Erase Me is probably my favorite album after Define The Great Line but They’re Only Chasing Safety is my number one for the nostalgia factor and just because it’s so poppy and memorable. It’s hard to pick a favorite. After Define The Great Line I get the albums mixed up and I didn’t keep up with the albums as much but when Erase Me dropped (like 2 years ago now?) it was fantastic. It felt fresh but also had that distinct Underoath sound they have always had. It was a breath of fresh air and somehow nostalgic probably because Spencer’s singing and some of the instrumental styles. I wish to see them again someday. I’m excited to hear their new album. I’ve been watching some of the streams with the file name type titles and an opaque overlay reading V O Y E U R I S M showing them in the studio with no sound. I have a hunch the album will have to do with the state of the world, chasing after fame and how social media has corrupted people and can be very damaging. I’m contemplating making a full length documentary about them this year.

@@hobi_6697 Haha re-reading now 10 months after I wrote that and maybe 2 weeks since the new album dropped. I forgot to mention I no longer where "skinny jeans" but my jeans are well fitted jeans. I listen to a lot of rap/trap music these days but I like all kinds of music. Really been back in an Elliott Smith phase again recently since I found out some sad family news and his music always makes things feel a bit more ok as they are as sad as it can be it helps. Elliott Smith is another artists I loved in high school and I could actually learn his songs on guitar whereas it was rare I ever learned an underoath song besides when the sun sleeps. I love the new underoath album! It's fantastic. My brother, who is still very Christian and married and successful in life is torn on the album because of the amount of swearing. I heard the swears too but they don't bother me. Maybe I'm just a bad Christian because I'm so laxadasical about all the strict stuff and just believe in this hippie idea of love but I just love the new album it hits great. I just hope they make a deluxe album because man this new album is tight. Of course if they tour I'm sure they will play old songs because the fans always want to hear older songs. I haven't read into it but it would be cool if the toured this album and played it front to back.

Evidence of a true conversion is zeal. Not just believing in God, but also knowing what He saved you from and what He went through to save you....and with that comes gratitude and fire for the Gospel. You just want everyone to know! You have so much love for Jesus, (because now He has become your first love) that you dont want anyone to leave this earth without knowing His Love too. Spencer may have fallen in love with music, but i hope now Jesus is his first love and that Love overwhelmingly seeks to glorify God. No, you won't go to hell if you don't witness...but if you're authentic, you can't help it, and i'm not talkin bout shovin down throats! no you wont go to hell if you dont go to church, but at least have other christians to hold you accountable and pray for/with you. no. you wont go to hell if you dont read the bible, but why would you wanna be ignorant of the truth of Jesus' words and the life they give when this world is so full of lies? how would u know the difference?

Guys, christian music is what is played at church, those are christian artist, also there are musicians saved by the blood of Christ. I really don't know where people get this idea that if you are a christian and a musician you have to play christian music. When Spencer said it wasn't a Christian's job to tell people what to believe, that's just not true. That is the sole reason we aren't translated to heaven upon believing. He left us here to tell people to believe in Him because it's the truth. Of course, we do that with gentleness, understanding, patience, respect, and love. But we are to do it. And he did it a lot every time I saw Underoath, he would announce, "I just wanted to say that we are doing this all in the name of Jesus Christ. God loves you." or something similar. which was about 4 times live. But that was back in the day, 2010 and earlier, and if he has changed, that's a shame I say--because this little carnival ride called modern society is going to come crashing down very soon and we will be in front of Jesus.

As a former Christian and theist who finds it difficult to take any of the “Christian” bands I used to listen to seriously, Underoath may have just saved their place in my playlist and are hopefully a harbinger of things to come because their are just way too many talented “Christian” musicians and bands making good, but unfortunately unlistenable music for the new unreligious Western world that’s growing every year. “Christian” band’s that focused way more on the music and let their all powerful god do his own communicating have always had the better and less cringeworthy music anyways. There are always a few exceptions like Grammatrain, but for the most part bands like Livng Sacrifice, Klank, and now Underoath make better art when the focuses is making art.

No, we learn actual history from books with known facts and that have been proven. As to the bible is a book and is acknowledged as ONLY a book, such as sleeping beauty, filled with stories. It was written by a bunch of people who no one has a clue who they even were, and nothing in it is proven to be fact, other than a man was crucified. A man walking around producing miracles? Nope. That wasn't a proven fact. The book is acknowledged by officials of history as a science fiction novel for a reason. Why do you think it is that it isn't taught in school? Oh, close-minded people being lead by the devil. Good answer

I didn't need a book to know I shouldn't cheat, lie, or steel. It also includes typical discrimination against gay people. I'm surprised black people weren't mentioned. I'll be honest, The book itself is less than clever, anyone can see the typical patterns. It's because it was written by a bunch of ordinary people who wanted to troll the world for as many years as possible. It's the typical: believe in this or perish- formula Christianity has produced more harm than good, look at all of the -FACT- murders that happened because of it in the king and queen days.

I just love the way he explains his relationship between his religious beliefs and his music. He does it it for the music: because he loves music, and he is able to hold religion personal/between members and friends. I can so much relate. I do some amount of worship (mostly before) and sometime participate in worship concerts. In addition I watched for example Blindside from Sweden last week, which is a post-hardcore/emo/hardcore/metal band with christian lyrics. That doesn't make me any different from anyone other that enjoys metal and music in general. I do admit that I like to find Christianity in metal (or other genres), though, like I have done with Extol, (death/Unblack metal), Fleshkiller (tech/prog death/unblack), as i said Blindside, Living Sacrifice (black/nu metal) and my somewhat guilty pleasure Flyleaf. Music is a wonderful thing, and I am so happy that I can pick up the guitar and express my self and take a few steps away from my everyday life and into the pure emotional aspect of life. I feel like so much of music today, especially those who come from a Christian background, spend so much time hiding who they really are, or being ashamed of their beliefs, trying to be 'scene' or to sell records." Spencer saying "it's not my job to tell people" is wrong because it's precisely the job of a Christian. I'm not having a go at him, he seems like a great guy but...

This is probably why Aaron Gillespie left because the band was falling away from its true purpose...Its not a worship band but that doesnt mean you cant glorify God while you still do it...I respect Aaron so much for starting The Almost and doing his own solo project

I've always appreciated Spencer and this makes me love him all the more! All he's saying is as a band, Underoath doesn't have some kind of hidden agenda other than to play music. Their faith will come out in their music b/c that's inevitable, but it's not like their end goal was to be some evangelist band. A good example of this is Thrice. Dustin Kensrue's goal was just to play music and make good art and nothing more.

He just wants everyone to enjoy their music regardless of religion. it's not a band for christians. It's for everyone. They are just christians in a band making music for anyone to listen to, not just for people who agree with their beliefs. If you have a problem with him then that would be exactly why he just said what he said in this interview

as Christians we are supposed to let God use us, its our job to tell people about him, its not our job to make people beleive, that is Gods job, but we have to plant the seed and spread the word as the apostles did, i dont think we should tell non believers how to live because that would drive people away, that is also Gods job to convict us, but i believe that if we see a brother or sister in Christ that is stumbling we should say something and help in a helpful but not angry or proud way

I understood that much. I was just curious if Spencer, himself, was a Christian. I knew he was converted after his addiction to drugs was overcome, but I wasn't sure if he was beginning to doubt again or if he was just saying "if there is a God" for the people watching the interview who didn't believe. thanks for clearing that up for me!

Spencer spent most of his life addicted to cocaine and now that the band started spiraling down since aarons departure I feel (in my opinion) that he wanted to go back to "having fun" and doing what he wants to do. He always said "We stand up here in the name of Jesus" and now that he doesn't feel obligated to follow Jesus he's taking back his own words.

Wow. You know I discredited these guys for a long time after You're Only Chasing Safety came out and I learned of their beliefs. I'll admit, I was ignorant and wrote them off because I heard rumors about them that they didn't believe in dinosaurs, thought the earth was only a few thousand years old, blah blah blah. I'm still an atheist, but I love religious people who think this way. Judging people? That's no one's job and I have been guilty of that many times. I don't force my beliefs on anyone, just like he says they don't. I feel bad for shirking their jams for years because of my ignorance despite generally enjoying their jams. Good on you, Underoath.

I feel as if Spencer calls himself a Christian, and that he does believe in a god, but he just isn't as spiritual as someone like Aaron...and theres absolutely nothing wrong with that...a band is composed of a group of people that all have different beliefs..you can't expect them to agree on everything and I'm sure that's why he said things got complicated.

It's not about judging. It's about if he is truly a Christian or not. Sometimes people act like regardless of what a person says or does, that they are still a Christian just because at one time they said they were. Now I am not saying that they had to have sang Michael W. Smith stuff to be true Christians. But If he's not gonna admit he's a Christian, that's a problem. I do believe from what I know of him, however, that he is a Christian, and Underoath is one of my favorite bands.

Spencer is a pretty good example of most Christians today. He fully believes in the gospel, but doesn't have the fortitude to tell others without being asked. The bible is pretty clear that God wants his people to use every chance they have to spread salvation and truth. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty a pretty gutless Christian myself, but I don't think he should say that it would "piss God off" for anyone to try and spread love.

I think he had said once that the combination of his love for music, and God, had saved him from his cocaine addiction. He probably said "if" for the fans who may not believe, because on their second album, they made a speech, talking about their religion, and that they don't want to feel like they're trying to shove their religion down peoples' throats, but that they want everyone to at least give it a try. So you're saying that he's humble by saying that there is a God, and "if" there is a God at the same time? The whole essence of Christianity is that there is a God, so it's not really humble to say (and sincerely mean with uncertainty) "if."

As a Christian, we should do all things to glorify God. If it doesn't honor the father then, it has no purpose. God created humans with the ability of freewill & that's because love does not exist without choice. Love is a choice. We do things to honor Him who created us. By whatever means. Christ should be working through you for the sake of love. Jesus loves us more than we will ever know. True communion with Christ should be evident in all your works. That's not to judge you or tell you how to live. It's a conviction & food for thought. So yeah, if you worship God, your work should glorify Him. Because this life is a gift. We have a redeemer. God bless you guys & peace to your spirit! Ps, hey spencer! I met you at the Hollywood Palladium a few years back. You're a good dude! But I encourage you to think on these things Philippians 4:18 English Standard Version Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

I'm not a Christian and I don't think that should be grounds for criticism. Disagreement sure. It doesn't make me a worse person. Maybe I'm worse than some of you. Maybe I'm better than others. I probably fall somewhere in the range, and I try like most to become a better person over time. I would enjoy it if Christians encouraged me to be a better person instead of criticizing my beliefs. I would enjoy it if churches happily accepted anyone with good intentions as equals into their communities.
