India: The Motherland of Spices and a Global Leader in Spice Trade
India, renowned as the motherland of spices since time immemorial, continues to dominate the global spice market in terms of production, consumption, and export. In the fiscal year 2022-23, India demonstrated its prowess by exporting an impressive 14.04 lakh metric tons of spices and spice products, valued at Rs 31,761.38 crore (US$ 3,952.60 million).
Indian spices, celebrated for their rich flavor and aroma, enjoy significant demand both domestically and internationally. Of the 109 spices listed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), India produces approximately 75 varieties across its diverse climatic regions. With a footprint in over 180 countries, India exports more than 225 types of spices and value-added spice products. From its origins as a traditional supplier of whole spices, India has evolved into the "Spice Basket of the World," commanding significant volume and value in global spice trade.
Major Contributors to India's Spice Exports
Key contributors to India’s vibrant export portfolio include chili, cumin, spice oils and oleoresins, mint products, turmeric, curry powder, small cardamom, black pepper, coriander, and various seed spices. Notably, seed spices represent over 25% of the total export volume and 18% of the total export value. Cumin, in particular, holds the second-largest share in the export basket due to its high international demand.
Rajasthan and Gujarat: The Seed Spice Bowl of India
Rajasthan and Gujarat are the major hubs for seed spice production in India. Rajasthan, in particular, is a leading producer of cumin and fennel, increasingly recognized for high-quality seed spice production, especially IPM-grade spices. In 2022-23, Rajasthan cultivated cumin over 5.50 lakh hectares, yielding 2.75 lakh metric tons with a productivity rate of 0.50 metric tons per hectare. Fennel was grown on 0.31 lakh hectares, producing 0.34 lakh metric tons with a productivity rate of 1.09 metric tons per hectare. Overall, Rajasthan ranked second in total spice production in India, with an impressive 10.44 lakh metric tons produced across 8.12 lakh hectares, achieving a productivity rate of 1.28 metric tons per hectare.
Rajasthan is emerging as a significant trading and processing hub for cumin and fennel. Key trading platforms include the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Jodhpur (Jeera Mandi), Merata, Bhilara, and Gudamalani, supported by favorable state government policies and an improved payment system for farmers.
Spices Board India: Promoting Quality and Market Access
The Spices Board of India, under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, is the premier organization for the development and global promotion of Indian spices. It spearheads initiatives to strengthen linkages within the spice industry and ensure the export of high-quality spices. In collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF), the Spices Board is implementing the "Strengthening Spice Value Chain in India and Improving Market Access through Capacity Building and Innovative Interventions" project. This initiative focuses on addressing sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) issues and enhancing market access for Indian spices. In Rajasthan, the project is being implemented in Lototi and Berkallan villages in Jaitaran Tehsil of Beawar District, focusing on fennel, and in Tekara and Jaseri villages in Baap Tehsil of Phalodi District, focusing on cumin.
Buyer-Seller Meet and Spice Conclave
To facilitate better price realization and explore improved marketing channels for spice exports, the Spices Board is organizing a Buyer-Seller Meet (BSM) and Spice Conclave on January 10, 2024, at the Agriculture University Auditorium in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. This event aims to forge market alliances and direct collaborations, bridging the gap between growers and exporters. Approximately 150 participants, including Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), progressive farmers, farmer societies, processors, traders from Rajasthan, and exporters from adjacent states, will attend the BSM and Conclave.
This initiative by the Spices Board is expected to create valuable opportunities for direct and effective business linkages among stakeholders in the spice sector, thereby promoting the export of seed spices from Rajasthan, particularly from the STDF project villages.
